  • Borrowing in Celtic Music
1 of 10 BORROWING IN CELTIC MUSIC 13/03/09 I have long been fascinated by the identification of ‘Celtic’ culture and, by extension, ‘Celtic’ music. Its adequate definition has even resisted recent attempts (Stokes & Bohlman, Sawyers, Melhuish). One of the initial questions I have concerned myself with is whether the term ‘Celtic music’ has force as a style-label, as a genre-label, as a practice, or simply as a deft marketing ploy. As such, I have had to ask myself about the relationships between individual examples of ths repertoire – what they share, what they fail to share, and how such sharing comes about. The sharing of, or re-working of, material between distinct items within a repertoire is, it seems to me, very much on the agenda of this gathering. The terms in which I might discuss these in ‘Celtic music’ are not, however, self-evident. The obvious conceptual apparatus for this is represented by Bakhtinian dialogism. And, it seems to me that this will be useful, particularly in consideration of intra-opus details. Indeed, in ordinary analytical work, dialogism has already made a marked entry into musicology. I am less easy, however, with the employment of the concept to discuss inter-opus details, to discuss material shared between different items within a repertoire. Kevin Korsyn glosses Bakhtin’s concept of the ‘dialogic chain’ like this: utterances … continually respond… to past utterances while anticipating their future reception… In this dialogic process, we are sometimes authors, but we are also intermediaries, passing on socially constituted messages; we are couriers (Korsyn 2003: 39) A successful courier is, however, mute.

INVITED SUBMISSION - SPECIAL ISSUE | PEER REVIEWED Singing my way to Social Justice Karan Casey 1 * 1 University of Limerick, Ireland *[email protected] Received: 30 March 2017 ; Accepted: 29 September 2017 ; Published: 1 November 2017 Editor: Michael Viega Reviewer: Daphne Rickson Abstract My name is Karan Casey and I am a singer. In this paper I am interrogating the per- formance of social justice, and how my ideals are performed, as an Irish woman, as a social activist, as a traditional and a folk singer, and as a cultural voice. Having a 25-year career as an Irish singer I will be emphasising the voice of the professional artist and how my power as an active agent and participant in this setting gets to the heart of social responsibilities that are important to me. I will be investigating my song choices to see if they contribute to a discussion of social justice and how this is demonstrated performatively and through the text. You can approach this article in two ways. You can click here on the link for the full performance or you can scroll down through this paper and play the songs within the context of my writing. I hope you enjoy it, whichever pathway you choose. Keywords: Irish traditional song, protest song, folk music, social justice, Introduction “Singing My Way to Social Justice.” My name is Karan Casey and I am a singer. I have been a professional singer perform- ing worldwide in Ireland, Europe, Japan, and America. I have made 10 albums to date and have collaborated and guested on over 50 albums.

  • KARAN CASEY Hieroglyphs That Tell the Tale
(/) Recherche personnalisée #### KARAN CASEY Hieroglyphs That Tell The Tale Philippe Cousin Eighth album for Karan Casey, the singer from Cork who had not recorded since 2013. While his previous album was the most personal of his career with eleven tracks that she composed, Karan returns with Hieroglyphs That Tell The Tale, an album more in line with what we used to hear from her. A clever mix of contemporary songs and original compositions, there is only one traditional Sixteen Come Next Sunday popularized many years ago by the Bothy Band, and again with a very jazzy touch highlighted by the discreet concertina of his companion Niall Vallely. Karan Casey has always chosen to perform songs with a very strong social resonance. This is the case with Bob Dylan's Hollis Brown. It also gives priority to the fight against war, for freedom and equity for women. Her songs reflect, she emphasizes, life as she sees it and conceives it. She wrote three songs, including the magnificent Down in the Glen, a tribute to Julia Grennan and Elizabeth O'Farrell, two women strongly involved in the 1916 Easter uprising. To produce this superb album, Karan did not hesitate to call on the ban and the back ban of Irish and Scottish music. Almost twenty-five guests. Most of the arrangements are by guitarist Sean Óg Graham and Scotsman Donald Shaw, who also produces the album. No wonder then to find several members of Capercaillie: Ewen Vernal, James MacKintosh or Michael McGoldrick. And then the delicate and expressive voices of Karen Matheson, Pauline Scanlon, Niamh Dunne, Maura O'Connell and Aoife O'Donovan.

I have always believed that when you no longer enjoy doing 24 Bray Gardens, Loose, Maidstone, Kent, ME15 9TR, UK something, then it’s time to stop and look to do something di erent. I have had a 01622 744481 Igood run as editor, and now is the time to hand over to someone younger. Someone who [email protected] can hopefully take the magazine forward, embracing country music’s future whilst not Managing Editor overlooking its huge legacy of the past. I know that the new editor Laura Bethell who Michelle Teeman 01622 823920 worked with me for 5 years, 2 as my deputy editor, will do just that. [email protected] It was just over 47 years ago that I edited and published Britain’s rst regular monthly country music magazine. Some of the original 01622 823922 readers of Country Music Monthly are still around and have continued to follow my writing [email protected] and views on the music as readers of Maverick. ere was a time when I not only knew Editorial Assistant many of the Maverick readers’ names but had a personal contact with them, but recently Chris Beck I’ve lost touch and I have to say that I miss the chats that we used to have when they phoned Project Manager up to renew their subscriptions.
