List of films considered the best From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Films considered the greatest ever) Page semi-protected This list needs additional citations for verification. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be chall enged and removed. (November 2008) While there is no general agreement upon the greatest film, many publications an d organizations have tried to determine the films considered the best. Each film listed here has been mentioned in a notable survey, whether a popular poll, or a poll among film reviewers. Many of these sources focus on American films or we re polls of English-speaking film-goers, but those considered the greatest withi n their respective countries are also included here. Many films are widely consi dered among the best ever made, whether they appear at number one on each list o r not. For example, many believe that Orson Welles' Citizen Kane is the best mov ie ever made, and it appears as #1 on AFI's Best Movies list, whereas The Shawsh ank Redemption is #1 on the IMDB Top 250, whilst Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is #1 on the Empire magazine's Top 301 List. None of the surveys that produced these citations should be viewed as a scientif ic measure of the film-watching world. Each may suffer the effects of vote stack ing or skewed demographics. Internet-based surveys have a self-selected audience of unknown participants. The methodology of some surveys may be questionable. S ometimes (as in the case of the American Film Institute) voters were asked to se lect films from a limited list of entries.

  • A History of Romanian Theatre from Communism to Capitalism
A History of Romanian Theatre from Communism to Capitalism A History of Romanian Theatre from Communism to Capitalism analyses the last three decades of Romanian theatre and connects it to the international stage. Cristina Modreanu questions the relationship between artists and power, both before 1989, behind the Iron Curtain, and in the current global political context, with nationalism manifesting itself in Eastern Europe, as seen in the critical work of Romanian theatre makers. This study covers the com- plex cases of theatre makers, such as Lucian Pintilie, Liviu Ciulei and Andrei Ș erban, who built their international careers in exile, and the most innova- tive Romanian artists of today, such as Silviu Purcă rete, Mihai Mă niuţiu, Gianina Că rbunariu, Radu Afrim, and Bogdan Georgescu, who reached the status of transglobal artists. Filling a considerable gap in Romanian theatre discourse, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of contemporary theatre and history. Cristina Modreanu is a theatre critic and curator, and co-founder of Ro- manian Association for Performing Arts. Holding a PhD in theatre studies from National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest, she is a Fulbright alumna and the author of five books on Romanian theatre. • Silence As a Figural Event: Shakespeare in the Repertory of the National Radio Theatre
SILENCE AS A FIGURAL EVENT: SHAKESPEARE IN THE REPERTORY OF THE NATIONAL RADIO THEATRE ANA MARIA MUNTEANU “Ovidius” University of Constanta, Romania Abstract. The remarkable coherence of Shakespeare’s broadcast at the National Romanian Theater in successive crisis contexts, both moral and institutional, before and after the events in 1989, explains and participates – in a way that has to be deciphered and understood – at the symbolic re-capitalization of the public service and to the mutual consensus on the role, on the National Broadcast Radio Theatre’s mission in the process of de-ideologization and redefinition of the entire cultural system in the logic of the cultural market. The Shakespearian theatrical laboratory functions symbolically, logically, morally, as a high-accuracy magnifying glass. We will try to accredit the radio-drama as silence-generating polyphony. A silence full of life, amplified by the accelerated movement of signs and of a reflexive, active, intense, open intentionality… In other words, if the theatre is the art of interrogations, then the radio-drama was not during communism and it is not even now a bedtime story for listeners, because theatre listeners are not part of the cliché of the object-listener. Ask the substance and importance of Shakespeare’s plays and the volume of their radio mediation in the context of the period must be appreciated also from the perspective of the cultural production fields’ articulation. Paul Grigoriu, renowned director and former manager of the Romanian Radio Broadcast Society, considers that the radio’s offer, even in the toughest years of the totalitarian regime, “a refuge of the heart”, of certain authenticity, an uncontaminated part of Romanian culture, a kind of “cavern” or island, one could say, in which ideas and imagination have continued to prosper… For the great repertory of the NRT, totalizing more than 2000 titles, an accident-free transition has taken place, and without the noisy de-mythologizing that have affected other authors and the critical canon in general.

  • Conference Report Dietze Final
Tagungsbericht: “Theatre, Globalization and the Cold War.” Conference of the DFG Koselleck project “Global Theatre Histories” Veranstalter: Christopher Balme and Berenika Szymanski / Center for Advanced Studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Datum, Ort: 17-19 May 2012, Munich, Germany Bericht von: Antje Dietze, DFG Research Training Group 1261 “Critical Junctures of Globalization” at the Centre for Area Studies (CAS) of the University of Leipzig E-Mail: [email protected] The conference “Theatre, Globalization and the Cold War” , organized by theatre scholars Christopher Balme and Berenika Szymanski, addressed the Cold War as an arena of globalization together with the role of cultural flows during this time. Emerging from a research project on global theatre histories in the late 19th and 20th centuries, the conference aimed at opening up theatre research to questions of global or world history by analyzing theatrical trade routes and the emergence of a transnational public sphere. In their call for papers, the organizers had specifically stressed the spread of communism as one of the most significant global phenomena of the 20th century. This is a particularly interesting topic considering a certain imbalance in recent globalization research, which has not given adequate attention to processes of transnationalization emanating from the Eastern bloc. Culture played a special role in Cold War politics as it was widely perceived as one of the decisive factors in winning the war, thereby complementing military activities and diplomatic efforts. In order to fulfill this propagandistic role, cultural agents and products had to circulate and cross the Iron Curtain. Artists thus became enormously important as representatives of their respective states and systems, which gave them new forms of agency, but also subjected them to political instrumentalization and intensive surveillance.

ANNALES UNIVERSITATIS APULENSIS. SERIES PHILOLOGICA, no. 16, tom 1 / 2015 STUDII DE CULTURĂ ŞI LITERATURĂ / CULTURE AND LITERATURE STUDIES PERSONALITĂŢI MODELATOARE ÎN SPAŢIUL CULTURAL ŞI LITERAR ROMÂNESC INTERBELIC NAE IONESCU (1890-1940) Prof. univ. dr. Ileana GHEMEŞ Universitatea „1 Decembrie 1918” din Alba Iulia, România Abstract: In the Romanian cultural space, Nae Ionescu shaped his personality, one forming for the new generation of the '30s, through his lectures, prefaces and articles in a direct relation with his role as professor and journalist, while he was perceived with admiration by his former pupils and students. The Professor had an indisputable charisma, deeply embedded in the affective memory of his contemporaries, whether admirers or contesters. The discussions related to this exceptional person, who managed to raise vocations, are still open today. Some of them retain the fact that Nae Ionescu actually did not have any philosophical work, while his academic lectures lacked originality to that extent that they were in danger of being considered pure plagiarism. Some others underline the damaging influence he had upon the destiny of his disciples and thus condemn any attempt of the one who 'destroyed' an entire generation of values.
