Hotărând să dedicăm un număr cărţilor de cinema, demers considerat de noi a fi nu tocmai accesibil tuturor sau de interes general, ne-am decis ca ediţia imediat următoare a revistei să conţină un dosar cât mai prietenos cinefilului mediu. Deocamdată, după cum se poate subînţelege din afirmaţia precedentă, ne aflăm într-o fază clasică, într-un decalaj de aproape cinci decenii faţă de prestigioasa „Cahiers du cinéma”, spre exemplu, modernă prin excelenţă, al cărei conţinut şi abordare, în linii mari, au devenit în timp extrem de specializate sau ermetice sau pur şi simplu pretenţioase. Aşadar, din teama de a nu cădea într-un tip de dialectică redacţională inaccesibilă cititorilor, am stabilit ca numărul al patrulea al „Film Menu”, adică cel de faţă, să pună în discuţie „actoria de cinema”; o temă foarte vastă şi generală, care, pe lângă faptul că pe mine, în calitate de coordonator, m-a speriat iniţial, deoarece nu întrevedeam o anumită pistă pe care ar putea-o urma articolele conţinute în dosar, ar fi putut foarte uşor cădea în zona tabloidă a portretizării anumitor staruri de cinema. -

Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be chall enged and removed. (November 2008) While there is no general agreement upon the greatest film, many publications an d organizations have tried to determine the films considered the best. Each film listed here has been mentioned in a notable survey, whether a popular poll, or a poll among film reviewers. Many of these sources focus on American films or we re polls of English-speaking film-goers, but those considered the greatest withi n their respective countries are also included here. Many films are widely consi dered among the best ever made, whether they appear at number one on each list o r not. For example, many believe that Orson Welles' Citizen Kane is the best mov ie ever made, and it appears as #1 on AFI's Best Movies list, whereas The Shawsh ank Redemption is #1 on the IMDB Top 250, whilst Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is #1 on the Empire magazine's Top 301 List. None of the surveys that produced these citations should be viewed as a scientif ic measure of the film-watching world. Each may suffer the effects of vote stack ing or skewed demographics. Internet-based surveys have a self-selected audience of unknown participants. The methodology of some surveys may be questionable. S ometimes (as in the case of the American Film Institute) voters were asked to se lect films from a limited list of entries. -

A History of Romanian Theatre from Communism to Capitalism A History of Romanian Theatre from Communism to Capitalism analyses the last three decades of Romanian theatre and connects it to the international stage. Cristina Modreanu questions the relationship between artists and power, both before 1989, behind the Iron Curtain, and in the current global political context, with nationalism manifesting itself in Eastern Europe, as seen in the critical work of Romanian theatre makers. This study covers the com- plex cases of theatre makers, such as Lucian Pintilie, Liviu Ciulei and Andrei Ș erban, who built their international careers in exile, and the most innova- tive Romanian artists of today, such as Silviu Purcă rete, Mihai Mă niuţiu, Gianina Că rbunariu, Radu Afrim, and Bogdan Georgescu, who reached the status of transglobal artists. Filling a considerable gap in Romanian theatre discourse, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of contemporary theatre and history. Cristina Modreanu is a theatre critic and curator, and co-founder of Ro- manian Association for Performing Arts. Holding a PhD in theatre studies from National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest, she is a Fulbright alumna and the author of five books on Romanian theatre. Media-Reflexivity and Allegorical Figurations in Lucian Pintilie’s The Oak (1992) Katalin Sándor Babeş–Bolyai University (Cluj-Napoca), Research Fellow at the Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania (Cluj-Napoca, Romania) E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The paper discusses the question of media reflexivity and allegorical figuration in Lucian Pintilie’s 1992 film, The Oak . Through a fictional narrative, the film reflects on the communist period from the historical context of the post-1989 transition strongly marked by the after- effects of dictatorship and by political, social and economic instability. By incorporating a diegetic Polaroid camera and a home movie, The Oak displays a reflexive preoccupation with the mediality and the socio-cultural constructedness of the image. The figurative, allegorizing tendency of the film – manifest in the subversive recontextualization of grand narratives, iconographic codes or images of art history – also foregrounds the question of cultural mediation. I argue that by displaying the non-transparency of the cinematic image and the cultural mediatedness of the “real,” the media- reflexive and allegorical-figurative discourse of the film can be regarded as a critical historical response to the social and representational crises linked to the communist era, but at the same time it may be symptomatic of the social, cultural, political anxieties of post-1989 transition.1 Keywords: Pintilie, The Oak, media reflexivity, allegory, intermediality. In Romanian film history Lucian Pintilie’s cinematic oeuvre can be regarded as an intriguingly transitional discourse. -
