    A First Century Peshitta Manuscript, Dated and Signed! William Cureton (1808 – 17 June 1864) was an English Orientalist , born in Westbury, Shropshire . After being educated at the Adams' Grammar School in Newport, Shropshire and at Christ Church, Oxford , he took orders in 1832, became chaplain of Christ Church, sublibrarian of the Bodleian , and, in 1837, assistant keeper of manuscripts in the British Museum . Cureton became best known for his discovery of an old Syriac (Aramaic) manuscript of the four Gospels na med after him - the Curetonian manuscript. In 1845, he wrote the following: These comments piqued my curiosity, especially the second one in the footnote. I did a little research and found the source h e named by J. S. Assemani- Bibliotheca Orientalis, Vol . II, p. 486. There are online editions of the books available, however the text is written mostly in Latin and has some Syriac Aramaic as well. Syriac is no problem for me to read and translate; Latin is another matter, so I found a good Latin translation web site and managed, I think, to translate the Latin text involved. SANCTUARY THEOLOGY IN THE BOOK OF EXODUS ANGEL MANUEL RODRIGUEZ Antillian College Mayaguez, Puerto Rico 00709 The book of Exodus is the first OT book that mentions the Israelite sanctuary. This book provides us not only with precise information with respect to the sanctuary's physical structure and furniture, but also with basic information on its significance. The present study proposes to take an overview of several important theological motifs that emerge in connection with the ancient Israelite sanctuary as portrayed in the book of Exodus. Although various of these aspects have already been noticed by other researchers, my hope herein is to bring together certain significant elements in such a way as to broaden our understanding of the ancient Hebrew concept of the meaning of the ancient Israelite sanctuary. At the outset, it is appropriate to state that the various ele- ments we shall consider all have a bearing upon, and contribute to, an overarching theological concern related to the OT sanctuary/ temple: namely, the presence of Yahweh. Moreover, the book of Exodus is foundational for a proper understanding of this basic motif, as it describes how the people of Israel were miraculously delivered from Egyptian slavery by Yahweh, and how, by his grace, they became a holy nation under his leadership. He entered into a covenant relationship with them, and gave them the precious gift of his own presence.' 'The theology of the presence of God is a very important one in the OT.

A FG minimally consists of a head N, genitive particle and genitive DP complement. It (in a FG) expresses or conveys the meaning of possessiveness, something like of in English. There are two types of ħaqq in Yemeni Arabic: one not exhibiting agreement with the head N, and another exhibiting it.

  • The Idea of Medieval Heresy in Early Modern France
    The Idea of Medieval Heresy in Early Modern France Bethany Hume PhD University of York History September 2019 2 Abstract This thesis responds to the historiographical focus on the trope of the Albigensians and Waldensians within sixteenth-century confessional polemic. It supports a shift away from the consideration of medieval heresy in early modern historical writing merely as literary topoi of the French Wars of Religion. Instead, it argues for a more detailed examination of the medieval heretical and inquisitorial sources used within seventeenth-century French intellectual culture and religious polemic. It does this by examining the context of the Doat Commission (1663-1670), which transcribed a collection of inquisition registers from Languedoc, 1235-44. Jean de Doat (c.1600-1683), President of the Chambre des Comptes of the parlement of Pau from 1646, was charged by royal commission to the south of France to copy documents of interest to the Crown. This thesis aims to explore the Doat Commission within the wider context of ideas on medieval heresy in seventeenth-century France. The periodization “medieval” is extremely broad and incorporates many forms of heresy throughout Europe. As such, the scope of this thesis surveys how thirteenth-century heretics, namely the Albigensians and Waldensians, were portrayed in historical narrative in the 1600s. The field of study that this thesis hopes to contribute to includes the growth of historical interest in medieval heresy and its repression, and the search for original sources by seventeenth-century savants. By exploring the ideas of medieval heresy espoused by different intellectual networks it becomes clear that early modern European thought on medieval heresy informed antiquarianism, historical writing, and ideas of justice and persecution, as well as shaping confessional identity.

    Cognate Words in Mehri and Hadhrami Arabic Hassan Obeid Alfadly* Khaled Awadh Bin Mukhashin** Received: 18/3/2019 Accepted: 2/5/2019 Abstract The lexicon is one important source of information to establish genealogical relations between languages. This paper is an attempt to describe the lexical similarities between Mehri and Hadhrami Arabic and to show the extent of relatedness between them, a very little explored and described topic. The researchers are native speakers of Hadhrami Arabic and they paid many field visits to the area where Mehri is spoken. They used the Swadesh list to elicit their data from more than 20 Mehri informants and from Johnston's (1987) dictionary "The Mehri Lexicon and English- Mehri Word-list". The researchers employed lexicostatistical techniques to analyse their data and they found out that Mehri and Hadhrmi Arabic have so many cognate words. This finding confirms Watson (2011) claims that Arabic may not have replaced all the ancient languages in the South-Western Arabian Peninsula and that dialects of Arabic in this area including Hadhrami Arabic are tinged, to a greater or lesser degree, with substrate features of the Pre- Islamic Ancient and Modern South Arabian languages. Introduction: three branches including Central Semitic, Historically speaking, the Semitic language Ethiopian and Modern south Arabian languages family from which both of Arabic and Mehri (henceforth MSAL). Though Arabic and Mehri descend belong to a larger family of languages belong to the West Semitic, Arabic descends called Afro-Asiatic or Hamito-Semitic that from the Central Semitic and Mehri from includes Semitic, Egyptian, Cushitic, Omotic, (MSAL) which consists of two branches; the Berber and Chadic (Rubin, 2010).

  • A Textual and Contextual Analysis of the Hebrew Gospels Translated from Catalan
    A TEXTUAL AND CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF THE HEBREW GOSPELS TRANSLATED FROM CATALAN Pere Casanellas and Harvey J. Hames* ABSTRACT: THe first extant translation of the four Gospels into Hebrew is to be found in a late fifteentH-century manuscript kept in the Vatican Library (Vat. ebr. 100). THe study of this manuscript Has to date been rather HapHazard and very little Has been written about it. Delcor argued in 1981 that it was probably translated from Catalan and suggested that tHe translator was a Jew, probably writing at the end of tHe fifteenth-century or the start of the sixteenth-century. In this article we attempt to demonstrate that the manuscript is a copy of the original fourteenth or fifteentH century translation. It was indeed based on a Catalan translation of the Gospels, specifically, the so-called “Bíblia del segle XIV,” whicH is to be publisHed in the Corpus Biblicum Catalanicum. THere are small but significant Hints tHat the translator was a Jew writing for a JewisH audience, in order to provide them with knowledge of these core Christian texts (possibly to Help them to undermine CHristian polemicists). However, the possibility also exists that this translation was carried out by a converso for others who, in tHe aftermath of 1391 and the Tortosa disputation, Had converted or were considering conversion, in order to inform them about their new faith. 1.
