This booklet will be your guide for Sunday worship here through the summer. We are now in the longest liturgical season of the year: the time of the formation of the church. Having walked and prayed and sung—through the Advent of Jesus, the Epiphany manifestations of God in Christ, the penitential pilgrimage of preparation in Lent, the intensity of the Passion in Holy Week, and the joyous season of the mystery of the resurrection in Eastertide—we come now to the time where we, the Lord’s people, are learning to be the body of Christ. At Trinity, we mark the liturgical seasons with predictable variations. For the summer, the congregation and summer choirs will speak the psalms and sing the Sanctus, Lord’s Prayer, and Agnus Dei (which can be found on the back cover) together. And always, please sing the hymns with courage! You’ll find the psalms on the scripture insert, handed out each Sunday. The hymns are found in the blue Hymnal. Please stand and sing for all hymns. The prayer for the Eucharist is found in the Book of Common Prayer. The order of service and music selections for each Sunday may be found on the page for the day.     Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship Letter Voluntati obsequens to bishops, accompanying the booklet Jubilate Deo, 14 April 1974 Pope Paul VI has expressed often, and even recently, the wish that the faithful of all countries be able to sing at least a few Gregorian chants in Latin (for example, the Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei)1 In compliance, this Congregation has prepared the enclosed booklet Jubilate Deo, which provides a short collection of such Gregorian chants. I have the honour and office of sending you a copy of this booklet as a gift from the Pope himself. I also take this occasion to commend to your own pastoral concerns this new measure intended to ensure the carrying out of the prescription of Vatican Council II: ‘Steps should be taken enabling the faithful to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass belonging to them.’2 Whenever the faithful pray together as a community, they show at once the complex diversity of a people gathered ‘from every tribe, language, and nation’ and their unity in faith and charity. The diversity stands out in the many languages lawfully used in the liturgy and in the song settings suited to those languages. The languages and songs convey the religious spirit of each particular people, along with the identical teachings of faith; the different types of music correspond to the culture and traditions of each people. The unity of faith, on the other hand, stands out in a marked manner through the use of Latin and Gregorian chant.

    St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Richmond, Texas Acolyte and Chalice Bearer Instructions Ministry Description Thank you for answering the call to serve as a crucifer, torchbearer, gospel bearer, and/or chalice bearer in our parish. Every one of these ministries serves an important purpose in our worship at St. Mark’s. Our parish life and all ministries of our parish are shaped and transformed by our worship. Thus, the rector and people of St. Mark’s thank you for your part in glorifying God through our worship. Below are the definitions of the aforementioned ministries specific to the typical Sunday service at St. Mark’s, Richmond: Crucifer – the minister who carries the cross at the properly appointed times and assists the celebrant in setting the table at the Eucharist. In our parish, the crucifer also bears the first chalice during the time of communion. Torchbearer – the minister who lights the candles before the service, carries the torches at the properly appointed times and extinguishes the candles after the service Gospel Bearer – the minister who carries the gospel book at the properly appointed times. In our parish, the gospel bearer also bears the second chalice during the time of communion. Each of these ministries requires responsibility not only on the Sunday you serve but also in the event that you cannot serve on the day you are scheduled. You are responsible for finding a substitute from the attached list of available ministers. After finding a substitute, you need to notify the office of the change no later than the Wednesday prior to the service at which you were originally scheduled to serve.
