Composer Notes “Jubilate Deo Canon” is joy to me. The festive handbell ostinato accompaniment pattern— which mimics pealing bells—provides the foundation to the exuberant melody (loaded with alleluias); resulting in simple, yet fancy all at once! I’ve most often used “Jubilate Deo Canon” as a call to worship prelude, or as a song of praise within the liturgy. During Easter Season, Ordinary Time, Feast Days, Special Occasions for Celebration—this Canon can be inserted when an extra dose of joy is indicated! In a practical sense, because the handbell part is a repeating pattern, the ringers can easily memorize their part. This means that the handbell choir can lead a procession with the bells. This is especially effective if used as a prelude/call to worship, or even as an opener for choir concerts. The easiest way to assign bells is to assign patterns where ringers repeat. The choir can be split into two equal voices, or divided between men/women. Both options will work well. The vocal round is also easy to memorize. The arrangement of the Canon can be as simple as handbell ostinato/voices, or more formal when using the arrangement which includes instrument parts for brass quartet, keyboard and timpani (which I’ve used for large liturgies like a Baccalaureate Mass, or Special Feasts). Bells start off the piece, then the choir comes in, followed by timpani and brass. Ringers and Previewsingers of all ages (children’s choir, intergenerational choir) have enjoyed bringing this piece to life. I’m hopeful that this Canon will also provide your choir (and handbell choir) with another reason to make music with joyous praise.
