Biodiversity in Forests of the Ancient Maya Lowlands and Genetic Variation in a Dominant Tree, Manilkara zapota (Sapotaceae): Ecological and Anthropogenic Implications by Kim M. Lentz ABSTRACT The overall goal of this study was to determine if there are associations between silviculture practices of the ancient Maya and the biodiversity of the modern forest. This was accomplished by conducting paleoethnobotanical, ecological and genetic investigations at reforested but historically urbanized ancient Maya ceremonial centers. The first part of our investigation was conducted at Tikal National Park, where we surveyed the tree community of the modern forest and recovered preserved plant remains from ancient Maya archaeological contexts. The second set of investigations focused on genetic variation and structure in Manilkara zapota (L.) P. Royen, one of the dominant trees in both the modern forest and the paleoethnobotanical remains at Tikal. We hypothesized that the dominant trees at Tikal would be positively correlated with the most abundant ancient plant remains recovered from the site and that these trees would have higher economic value for contemporary Maya cultures than trees that were not dominant. We identified 124 species of trees and vines in 43 families. Moderate levels of evenness (J=0.69-0.80) were observed among tree species with shared levels of dominance (1-D=0.94). From the paleoethnobotanical remains, we identified a total of 77 morphospecies of woods representing at least 31 plant families with 38 identified to the species level. -

Medicinal plants provide affordable means of health care for poor and marginalised people. Ampelocissus is a genus of Vitaceae family. The FT-IR analysis of stem and fruit powder showed the alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, esters, amines, ketones, aldehydes. Despite its well- recognised medicinal and economic potential, there are no commercial plantations worldwide. Wild plants have continuously been used to meet the growing commercial demand in terms of their socio-economic value. Ampelocissus latifolia is the plant which may not be freely available in future due to over exploitation, habitat destruction or lack of domestication and cultivation. Since this plant species is an important ingredient of several medicines due to its usefulness, phytochemical investigation for isolation of important active ingredients through cell culture will be helpful. One of the major achievements of the Flora is having a complete account of all the Mono cotyledons. These are found in Volumes 6 (1997 – all monocots except the grasses) and 7 (1995 – the grasses) of the Flora. One of the main aims of publishing the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea was to stimulate further research in the region. This challenge was taken by the authors (with important input also from Odd E. Stabbetorp) in 2003 when the first edition of ‘Flowers of Ethiopia and Eritrea: Aloes and other Lilies’ was published (a book now out of print). The project was supported through the NUFU (Norwegian Council for Higher Education’s Programme for Development Research and Education) funded Project of the University of Oslo, Department of Biology, and Addis Ababa University, National Herbarium in the Biology Department. Planch. by ICP-AES technique. The quantitative estimation of various concentrations of elements in medicinal plants is necessary for determining their effectiveness in treating various diseases and for understanding their pharmacological action. Methods: Elemental concentrations of methanolic soxhlet leaf extracts of Ampelocissus latifolia was measured by the ICP-AES technique. 41 elements Na, Mg, Si, Cl, K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Co, Cd, Se, Al, S, Pb, Ba, Hg, As, B, P, Sr, Br, Ti, Bi, Ge, In, La, Li, Mo, Pd, Sb, Sc, Sn, Te, V, W, I, Th were screened. Results: Depending on geo-environmental factors and local soil characteristics, 11 elements were found to be present in the above leaf extract in different concentrations. 41 elements and their role in treating various diseases are discussed in this research paper. Conclusion: Data on elemental concentration in the above medicinal plant will be useful to set new standards for prescribing the dosage and duration of administration of these herbal medicines.
