PSD file iv ABSTRACT This project investigates the opportunity space of how Travel Companies can work better with Indigenous Tourism Suppliers - exploring the opportunity to engage in practices that generate shared value within tourism related business engagements. The perspectives and needs of each stakeholder group are explored through analytical frameworks as the project moves from literature review, to project design, data collection and analysis, towards final recommendations. The primary research method employed to support this exploration was a set of stakeholder surveys designed to elicit user-centered insights in support of the research question. The outputs from this project are new multi-stakeholder, primary-research driven insights on Indigenous Tourism Supplier engagement practices, a stakeholder matrix, and a series of recommendations designed to inform the development of a set of practical engagement guidelines to be adopted by Travel Companies when engaging with Indigenous Tourism Suppliers. The Network of Indigenous Peoples in Thailand2, in the International Working Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA) yearbook on 2008, explained the background of indigenous peoples in Thailand. The indigenous people of Thailand are most commonly referred to as “hill tribes”, sometimes as “ethnic minorities”, and the ten officially recognised ethnic groups are usually called “chao khao” (meaning “hill/mountain people” or “highlanders”). These and other indigenous people live in the North and North-western parts of the country. A few other indigenous groups live in the North-east and indigenous fishing communities and a small population of hunter-gatherers inhabit the South of Thailand.

    The Categorically Disaggregated Conflict (CDC) Dataset Codebook (Version 1.0, 2015.07) (Presented in Bartusevičius, Henrikas (2015) Introducing the Categorically Disaggregated Conflict (CDC) dataset. Forthcoming in Conflict Management and Peace Science) The Categorically Disaggregated Conflict (CDC) Dataset provides a categorization of 331 intrastate armed conflicts recorded between 1946 and 2010 into four categories: 1. Ethnic governmental; 2. Ethnic territorial; 3. Non-ethnic governmental; 4. Non-ethnic territorial. The dataset uses the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset v.4-2011, 1946 – 2010 (Themnér & Wallensteen, 2011; also Gleditsch et al., 2002) as a base (and thus is an extension of the UCDP/PRIO dataset). Therefore, the dataset employs the UCDP/PRIO’s operational definition of an aggregate armed conflict: a contested incompatibility that concerns government and/or territory where the use of armed force between two parties, of which at least one is the government of a state, results in at least 25 battle-related deaths (Themnér, 2011: 1). The dataset contains only internal and internationalized internal armed conflicts listed in the UCDP/PRIO dataset. Internal armed conflict ‘occurs between the government of a state and one or more internal opposition group(s) without intervention from other states’ (ibid.: 9). Internationalized internal armed conflict ‘occurs between the government of a state and one or more internal opposition group(s) with intervention from other states (secondary parties) on one or both sides’(ibid.).     Introduce : Akha in Thailand This article comes from the book- “study and the culture of Akha in Chiangrai: 8 groups of Akha tribe – 2003. Akha is the name of the people of a hilltribe that have their own language, beliefs, clothes and way of living. The 8 groups have basic similarities but some even have a different language; like the Ulow Akha and the Aker Akha, who do not understand each other. The 8 Akha groups of Thailand are: 1.Uloh Akha The Uloh Akha is a Thai Akha. This group was the first to move to the north of Thailand and stay, moving to DoiTung, Maefahluang. This group is very big and is mostly in Chiangrai, also moving to Chiangmai. The government gives 2 Thai Akhas the opportunity to develop their village; the Akha village at DoiSanjai, Maefahluang and the Akha village at Doisangow Chinagsan district. Chiangrai. 'Uloh' means a sharp hat, with the 'U' from Udoo meaning a sharp, high circle. The name is given to the Akha by the hat that they wear and this is a prominent group for their hats. The Thai Akha are a large number in Thailand with around 32,500 people spreading around the 5 provinces of Chiangrai, Chiangmai,Lamphang, Prae and Tak in the north of Thailand. Some of these people retain their traditional beliefs, respecting their ancestor spirits and others changed to buddism, Christianity and Islam. Sanjaroengao has the largest population of Akha people. The Uloh Akha language has become the standard between Akha people and is used to communicate between different groups.

A Brief Description of China’s 56 Ethnic Groups Throughout history, race, language and religion have divided China as much as physical terrain, political fiat and conquest.1 However, it is always a politically sensitive issue to identify those non-Han people as different ethnic groups. As a result, the total number of ethnic groups has never been fixed precisely in China. For example, in 1953, only 42 ethnic peoples were identified, while the number increased to 54 in 1964 and 56 in 1982.     Becoming Stateless: Historical Experience and Its Refl ection on the Concept of State among the Lahu in Yunnan and Mainland Southeast Asian Massif Kataoka Tatsuki* This paper aims to contribute to James Scott’s discussion of statelessness in “Zomia” by examining the realities of political autonomy and the concepts of state and king- ship of the Lahu. During the nineteenth century, “kings” appeared among the Lahu in parts of southwest Yunnan. Indeed, the Lahu enjoyed political autonomy under their own kings before these were eliminated in the process of modern state forma- tion and border demarcation in China and Burma. Messianic movements emerged among the Lahu after they became stateless. These movements stressed the need to redeem the lost states and kings throughout the course of the Lahu’s modern history. In this respect, statelessness is not a timeless, quintessential attribute of the Lahu. Rather, they only became conscious of statelessness during the modern period. What this demonstrates is that the Lahu have never been conscious anar- chists who chose to avoid kings and states. They possess their own original con- cepts of state and kingship, even though these differ from our conventional under- standing, and the main theme of their historical experience and mythical accounts centers around their search for their own state and king. Introduction During a four-year research period among the Tibeto-Burman-speaking Lahu in the hills of north Thailand ( 1966-70), 1 I was fortunate to be able to record and translate a substantial corpus of prayer texts applicable to various ritual occasions. Intrinsically valuable as "oral literature", these prayer texts also have helped me greatly in decipher­ ing Lahu ideas: about the supernatural worl.d and their place in :r:elation to it. It is important, I believe, to make this poetic expression of a preliterate moun­ tain people of northern Southeast Asia available to oriental, ethnological and allied scholarship. To this end, and as another step towards a substantial monograph on the Lahu people among whom ·1 worked,2 I have published many of these texts with their ethnographic background in scholarly journals. The result is a series of articles, each one focusing on a certain ritual occasion and giving the texts (in Lahu and in English translation) of the prayers used at that time.     THE DfVISHlNS OF THE LIAHU PEOPLE by Anthony R. Walker* I The Lahu are a Tibeto-Burman-speaking people whose small villages are scattered throughout the rugged Yunnan-Indochina borderlands.! About sixty percent of their total today live in southwest Yunnan. Originally they came from further north, and in recent centuries they have migrated southward into eastern Burma, north Thailand and north­ west Laos. 2 Although a common language and a number of shared cultural and social traits enable us to distinguish the Lahu from other hill peoples such as Akba, Lisu, Meo; Yao, etc., they are by no means a homogeneous "tribe". They recognize among themselves many named sub-groups or divisions, e.g. Labu Na (Black Lahu), Labu Shi (Yellow), Lahu Nyi (Red), Labu Hpu (White), and Lahu Sheh Leh (meaning unknown), to mention only the better-known. The existence of such divisions, and the variety of names given to them, has been the cause of considerable confusion in the ethnographic literature, and even among the people themselves.
