In a convergence of musical genres as wide ranging as Texas Outlaw Country, New Orleans Brass and Funk, Alternative Indie Rock, Americana, Bluegrass, Neo-Soul, Folk, Punk, Hip Hop, Spoken Word, Comedy, Electronic and more, the Sing Out Loud Music Festival, now in its second year, has expanded to include over 200 national, local and regional acts playing 50 showcases at 15 St. Augustine venues during September 8 – 10, 15 -17 and 22 - 24. 14 JPN 4930 Japanese Business Culture Section 08CE Spring 2017 COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed for undergraduate students who wish to acquire a broader understanding of prevailing values, attitudes, behavior patterns, and communication styles in modern Japan in regard to conducting business in the future. A key to being successful in business internationally is to understand the role of culture in international business. In this class we will explore cross-cultural issues and cultural values by reading essays from the perspective of Japan itself as well as from an external view, primarily that of Western society. Mutual assumptions, unconscious strategies, and different mechanics forming barriers to communication between Japanese and non-Japanese will be investigated in order to understand how cultural and communication differences can create misunderstanding and breakdown among individuals as well as during negotiations between companies and countries. Among other topics, business etiquette, business communication, the structure and hierarchy of Japanese companies, gender issues, socializing for success in business, and strategies for creating and maintaining effective working relationships with Japanese counterparts will be discussed. We will read several case studies on Japanese/American negotiations to understand how American managers or public officials negotiated successfully with Japanese counterparts, and what issues or problems were presented during negotiation. During the semester, students are required to submit (1) current relevant newspaper, magazine, or on-line article taken from news sources such as Japanese newspapers (English version), CNBC, Nikkei Net, JETRO, Reuters, BBC, THE ECONOMIST or TIME magazine, etc. to be pre-approved and posted by the instructor on the E-Learning in Canvas Discussion Board. -

Winnie Verloc and Heroism in The Secret Agent. Master of Arts (English), May 1993, 77 pp., bibliography, 65 titles. Winnie Verloc's role in The Secret Agent has received little initial critical attention. However, this character emerges as Conrad's hero in this novel because she is an exception to what afflicts the other characters: institutionalism. In the first chapter, I discuss the effect of institutions on the characters in the novel as well as on London, and how both the characters and the city lack hope and humanity. Chapter II is an analysis of Winnie's character, concentrating on her philosophy that "life doesn't stand much looking into," and how this view, coupled with her disturbing experience of having looked into the "abyss," makes Winnie heroic in her affirmative existentialism. Chapters III and IV broaden the focus, comparing Winnie to Conrad's other protagonists and to his other female characters. Volume 15, Number 1 • Fall 2017 Articulations of Salaryman Masculinity in Shôwa and Post-Shôwa Japan by Romit Dasgupta, University of Western Australia Abstract: This paper looks at Japan over the Shôwa (1925—1989) and post- Shôwa, Heisei (1989— ) periods through the discourse of masculinity embodied in the urban, middle-class white- collar “salaryman.” As a sort of “Everyman” of corporate Japan, particularly over the 1960s-1990s, the salaryman came to signify both Japanese masculinity in general, and more specifically Japanese corporate culture. In this regard the discourse of masculinity signified by the salaryman could have been regarded as the culturally privileged hegemonic masculinity. Moreover, despite the corporate re- structurings and socio-economic and cultural shifts in Japan since the 1990s, the salaryman continues to be pivotal to the ways in which Japanese corporate culture, Japanese masculinity, and indeed Japanese national identity continue to be framed. This paper traces the emergence of the discourse of the salaryman in the first decades of the twentieth century, its entrenchment in the post-World War II (postwar) decades as the hegemonic blueprint for Japanese masculinity, and its apparent fragmentation over the decades of economic slowdown since the 1990s.
