' •• 260 vi ABSTRACT Because of woman's peculiar relationship to language, and therefore to the means of comprehending and expressing her experience, female autobiographical writing is a problematic undertaking. An exploration of several premises about Western culture can help to illuminate the difficulties the female autobiographer encounters in creating her life/text. Among these premises are the following: (1) that the culture that provides the context for female experience is what feminist theorists call "patriarchal," that is, a culture dependent upon and reinforced by the supremacy of male interests, pursuits, and values. (2) that the habit of mind of this culture is essentially dichotomous, and that this bifurcation, although it serves very well to enable one person or group to gain power over an other, fails to account for the sense of relatedness characteristic of female moral development as demonstrated by recent feminist psychologists. (3) that one lives through telling oneself the story of one's life (that is, that living itself is an essentially autobiographical act); that this narrative conforms to certain cultural conventions; and that these conventions present distinct problems to the narrator who is female. (4) that the human being constructs her/his self through language, and vii viii that the language of a patriarchal culture is problematic to female authen tici ty. In order to confront these theoretical problems in practice, twelve essays explore some experiences of a middle-aged, middle-class white American woman in the second half of the twentieth century. These include illness, both physical (multiple sclerosis) and emotional (depression, agoraphobia); suicide; relationships with men, strangers, and cats; motherhood; and above all, writing. They form a feminist project whose purpose is so to merge theory with praxis, nonfiction with fiction and poetry, scholarhship with creation, that such distinctions become meaningless and the female writer can get on with the real business of making and contemplating her text. An annotated selected bibliography lists works in feminist theory and criticism, some of which inform the essays, thus providing a program for extensive feminist study, especially in literature, anthropology, and psychology. Chapter I INTRODUCTION Students of human consciousness have long noted the existence of two cognitive modes, which appear now to be located in the left and right hemispheres of the brain. "One mode," Robert Ornstein summarizes, "the articulate or verbal intellectual, involves reason, language, analysis, and sequence. The 'other' mode is tacit, 'sensuous,' and spatial, and operates in a holistic, relational manner."l One need not have done very much background reading to associate these modes (the former usually located in the "left brain" but, regardless of its location, referred to as the "dominant" hemisphere) with masculine "logic," for instance, versus "female intuition" the folk conception of masculinity and femininity, although Ornstein does not do so and does not even list these terms in his index.

Understood in a broad and critical sense, climate change concerns material agencies that impact on biomass and energy, erased borders and microbial invention, geological and nanographic time, and extinction events. The Desire to Feed or the Desire to Be Fed?: The Entangled Relation Between Bloom and the Maternal ♣ Figure in Ulysses Tsung-huei Huang National Taiwan University Abstract The question as to whether Leopold Bloom, for all his gentleness and generosity, tends to have a biased conception of “woman” is a controversial one. Instead of charging Bloom with politically incorrect gender assumptions, this paper will argue that Bloom does not see all women through a distortional speculum. Woman’s role as a mother, for one thing, is far from being the target of Bloom’s disparagement. What significance does Bloom envisage in the maternal figure that prompts him to exempt the mother from the category of the threatening other? Seeking to penetrate into Bloom’s complicated relation with the maternal figure, this paper first sketches how Bloom shows his sympathy to- wards women whenever they are thought of as caretakers or murderers. I proceed to argue that his eagerness to identify with the mother can hardly escape our attention if we track Bloom’s desire to feed. Reading Bloom’s desire to feed from a psychoanalytic pers- pective, I demonstrate how this desire is entangled with womb envy and how Bloom’s own fantasy of becoming a mother can help him handle the trauma of losing his son. Further, I contend that Bloom’s identification with the mother is vindicated by his desire to be fed as well. The desire reveals Bloom’s underlying wish to be impregnated by the mother and thereby become a mother himself.

Loren, Scott Abstract: Though the films of David Cronenberg might not always be concerned with gender froma social constructivist or performative perspective, I think one readily agrees with Linda Ruth Williams’ claim that “for Cronenberg, anatomy is anything but destiny”3. For decades, his characteristic mutations of gendered bodies have repeatedly accompanied the destabilization of fixed notions about gender. It seems that the most fixed notion of gender to be found in his work is that gender is mutable. Likethe physical boarders to bodies in his films, gender is repeatedly undone, constantly shifting, threatening to become something else. For Cronenberg, a perpetual undoing and rearticulation of gender raises the question of when a man becomes a man in a rather unconventional manner. His films initially encourage us to ask other questions, like: “When does a man become a walking, speaking anus?” (Naked Lunch); “when does a man become an insect?” (The Fly); “when does a man become a machine?” (Videodrome, The Fly, Crash, eXistenZ). Of course one would also have to ask: “When does a man become a woman?” (Crimes of the Future, M. Butterfly) “When is a man completely unable to enter manhood?” (Spider) “When is a man a monster?” and “Is a man ever ‘simply’ a man?” (most of his films). It seems that with the release of each new film, one must rearticulate inquiries into the staging of gender in Cronenberg’s work, which is precisely what I wish to do here.

After some debate on the issue, Marinetti qualified "il disprezzo della donna" as a "contempt" for woman as the icon of decadence, which he attributed to ìhefin-de-siècle writers (specifically Gabriele D'Annunzio). Marinetti and Robert converge in their "contempt" for the unhygienic/decadent positioning of woman as the "femme fatale," the bourgeois wife and the nurturing mother (mammismo). As a result, both Robert and Marinetti glorify virility and aggressiveness. However, the two Futurists' contempt of the un-hygienic diverges in respect to Marinetti 's fear of the engulfment of not only "uomo-torpediniera," but also the "follarisacca" in the "donna-golfo." Robert reacts not to a fear of the "vagina dentata," but to the socially conditioned "debolezza"

    Impure Relations: Feminism, Pornography and Ethical Heterosex Katherine Albury PhD, School of Media, Film and Theatre 2006 ABSTRACT This thesis engages with feminist and queer theory to assert that heterosexuality can be understood not as a fixed, unchanging and oppressive institution, but as changing combination of erotic and social affects which coexist within public and private bodies, discourses and imaginations. Drawing on the work on Michel Foucault, William Connolly, Eve Sedgwick and others, it examines the multiple discourses of heterosexuality that are already circulating in popular culture, specifically, representations of sex and gender within sexually explicit media. It examines the fields of polyamory, ‘feminist porn’, amateur and DIY pornography and ‘taboo’ sexual practices to demonstrate the possibilities offered by non-normative readings of heterosex. These readings open up space not only for queerer, less oppressive heterosexualities, but also for models of ethical sexual learning which incorporate heterosexual eroticism and emphasise both the pleasures and dangers of heterosex.
