Criswell Proverbs for Teens Copyright 2012 by Jodi Green INTRODUCTION When I was in junior high school (middle school now days), I heard about Billy Graham’s practice of reading five chapters of Psalms and one chapter of Proverbs every day. Since there are 150 chapters of Psalms and 31 chapters of Proverbs, that meant he read the entire books of Psalms and Proverbs every month. And since Psalms teaches us to relate to God, and Proverbs teaches us to relate to our culture, Billy Graham’s idea seemed like a great one. Dr. Graham’s practice was to read the chapters of Proverbs according to the day of the month. For example, on the first day of the month he read Proverbs 1; the second day would be Proverbs 2, and so on. He read Psalms in order of the chapters, but we will discuss that more in the conclusion. My hope for this book is to begin training you to read a chapter of Proverbs every day. Proverbs is a book of wisdom, and we all need a daily dose of Biblical wisdom. Reading only one verse of scripture per day is like eating one spoonful of cereal for breakfast. It is still good for you, but you need a whole bowl to be nourished physically. In the same way, one verse of scripture is good for you, but you need more if you are to grow spiritually. -

Scenes from the Old Testament Susanna and the Elders 6 March 2016 The Dean of St Edmundsbury Daniel 13 The man that looks on glass, on it may stay his eye Or if he pleaseth, through it pass, and then the heavens espy. The stained glass in St Edmundsbury Cathedral is largely Victorian – good quality, of course; but not the old mediaeval images that throughout Suffolk were destroyed by William Dowsing and his iconoclastic crew in the seventeenth century. They rampaged through village and church, smashing that which was idolatrous to their eyes, seeking the purity of clear glass, unadulterated by corrupting images, to mediate the pure gospel, now revealed in plain English. At the Cathedral one window remains of mediaeval origin. You’ll see it as you enter, straight ahead of you, in the South West corner. The bottom half shows the story of Susanna and the elders, or judges, who falsely accuse her of adultery. It’s a story from the thirteenth chapter of Daniel, which you’ll find in the Apocrypha, that selection of books that isn’t found in Protestant versions – literally, the hidden Bible. Nevertheless, it’s a story that is familiar throughout the history of visual art. It gave artists the opportunity to please their patrons, after all, with a biblical character, a very delicate woman and beauteous to behold, suggestively, provocatively portrayed, washing herself, naked. A virtuous, married woman; her virtue and unattainability intensifying her allure, of course. A story for the responsible elders of any age: a reminder to keep their attention pure, even as they are titivated; not to succumb to the temptations of lust, of easy gratification. -

chapter one INTRODUCTION Toward the middle of the third century ce, Julius Africanus sent a letter to Origen, chiding the great scholar for employing the Story of Susanna in debate with another Christian.1 Though the two Greek versions of Daniel used by Christians at the time both included Susanna, Africanus points to several problems with the story, including its absence from the Jewish ver- sion of Daniel and the presence of Greek puns in the story, which proves that it is not a translation from Hebrew.2 For these reasons, according to Africanus, Christians should reject the story as a genuine part of Daniel; indeed, they should consider it spurious (κίβδηλος) and a recent fabrication (νεωτερικὸς καὶ πεπλασµένος; §2).3 Origen responds with a detailed refuta- tion of each of Africanus’ points, especially the suggestions that the Chris- tian OT should mimic the Jewish Bible and that the Story of Susanna could not have been written in Hebrew. PROVERBS 67 Part One: Ten Instructions for the Wisdom Seeker Chapters 1-9 Introduction.Proverbs is generally regarded as the COMMENTARY book that best characterizes the Wisdom tradition. It is presented as a “guide for successful living.” Its PART 1: Ten wisdom instructions (Chapters 1-9) primary purpose is to teach wisdom. In chapters 1-9, we find a set of ten instructions, A “proverb” is a short saying that summarizes some aimed at persuading young minds about the power of truths about life. Knowing and practicing such truths wisdom. constitutes wisdom—the ability to navigate human relationships and realities. This is the first in a series of four presentations that will look at Jewish literature written between the end of events in the Old Testament and the writing of the New Testament. 2. These writings help to bridge the large historical and theological gap between the Old and New Testaments. 3. As one author writes: “The fact is that the atmosphere in which the New Testament is written is in large part the product of the period between the testaments, and no amount of study of the Old Testament can solely explain it.” Surburg, Introduction to the Intertestamental Period at 9. 4. Today, we will talk about the Apocrypha, books included in the Bibles of Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians but omitted from most Protestant Bibles. 5. Next week we will look at a collection of Jewish writings called Pseudepigrapha, one of which is actually quoted in the New Testament and several of which were relied upon by New Testament writers. 6. In the third week, we will look at the Dead Sea Scrolls, which have shed enormous light on Jewish beliefs at the time of Jesus and show great similarities to many Christian beliefs. 7. Finally we will look at the writings of Jewish contemporaries of Jesus and the New Testament writers, including Philo and Josephus. 8. Over the course of this series, we will see that the New Testament and Christian teachings draw a lot more on Jewish ideas and Jewish expressions than most Christians realize. -
The Book of Enoch in the Light of the Qumran Wisdom Literature
CHAPTER FIVE THE BOOK OF ENOCH IN THE LIGHT OF THE QUMRAN WISDOM LITERATURE I The Book of Watchers is now regarded as the earliest apocalypse that we possess, and the Book of Enoch as a whole as a prime example of the apocalyptic genre, a major source for our understanding of apocalyp- ticism. The apocalyptic genre is, of course, traditionally regarded as representing a continuation of prophecy, and the Book of Enoch does make use of prophetic genres in a variety of ways. It is also of inter- est to note that the quotation of 1:9 in Jude 14–15 is introduced by the statement that Enoch “prophesied” about the heretics condemned by Jude, and that in Ethiopian tradition of a much later age Enoch is called the fi rst of the prophets. But in the Book of Enoch itself, Enoch is described as a scribe and a wise man, and his writings as the source of wisdom, and although the book cannot in any sense be regarded as a conventional wisdom book, this inevitably raises the question of the relationship of the book to ‘wisdom’ and the wisdom literature. Within the last decade Randall Argall and Ben Wright have attempted to answer this question by comparing 1 Enoch with Sirach. Thus in a recent monograph, 1 Enoch and Sirach: A Comparative Literary and Conceptual Analysis of the Themes of Revelation, Creation and Judgment, Argall argued that there are similarities in the way 1 Enoch and Sirach treat the themes of revelation, creation, and judgment, and “that their respective views were formulated, at least in part, over against one another.”1 Ben Wright has taken views like this further and has argued that Ben Sira actively took the side of the temple priests in polemical opposition against those, such as the authors of the Book of Watchers, who criticized them.2 He, like 1 Randall A. -

Disciplines Biblical Studies | Jewish Studies This journal article is available at ScholarlyCommons: https://repository.upenn.edu/jewishstudies_papers/16 WHO WERE THE “MEN OF HEZEKIAH” (PROVERBS XXV 1)? by MICHAEL CARASIK Though the word “king” appears more than 30 times in the book of Proverbs, the only Israelite kings actually mentioned by name there are Solomon and Hezekiah. The headings in Prov. 1:1, 10:1 and 25:1 identify the proverbs they introduce as “Solomon’s,” fitting the description of his wisdom in 1 Kings. The emergence of the Israelite wisdom tradition with the consolidation of Solomon’s kingdom is plausible enough—a strong central government needs an educated class of administrators—and indeed such writers as A. Alt and G. von Rad have tried to treat this “Solomonic enlightenment” as a historical fact.1 The consensus of opinion today, how- ever, is better represented by this statement of James L. Crenshaw: “In sum, our examination of the biblical traditions about Solomon’s wisdom discovers no shred of evidence deriving from the era of that king.”2 Instead, wisdom traditions are assumed to have clustered around the literary character of Solomon as the legendary wisest of all men. -
The Book of Proverbs Is Not Mysterious, Nor Does It Leave Its Readers Wondering As to Its Purpose
INTRODUCTION The book of Proverbs is not mysterious, nor does it leave its readers wondering as to its purpose. At the very outset we are clearly told the author’s intention. The purpose of these proverbs is to teach people wisdom and discipline, and to help them understand wise sayings. Through these proverbs, people will receive instruction in discipline, good conduct, and doing what is right, just, and fair. These proverbs will make the simpleminded clever. They will give knowledge and purpose to young people. Let those who are wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. And let those who understand receive guidance by exploring the depth of meaning in these proverbs, parables, wise sayings, and riddles. NLT, 1:2-6 The book of Proverbs is simply about godly wisdom, how to attain it, and how to use it in everyday living. In Proverbs the words wise or wisdom are used roughly125 times. The wisdom that is spoken of in these proverbs is bigger than raw intelligence or advanced education. This is a wisdom that has to do skillful living. It speaks of understanding how to act and be competent in a variety of life situations. Dr. Roy Zuck’s definition of wisdom is to the point. Wisdom means being skillful and successful in one’s relationships and responsibilities . observing and following the Creator’s principles of order in the moral universe. (Zuck, Biblical Theology of the Old Testament, p. 232) The wisdom of Proverbs is not theoretical.1 It assumes that there is a right way and a wrong way to live. -

Is New Moon Full Moon? Shalom. We should all have the unwavering desire to serve and please Alohym and keep his commandments, (Ecclesiastes 12:13) for this is the duty of Man. In this note study we have supplied Scripture as a first witness and several other witnesses of which are Historical and Scriptorial that expose the theory of New Moon being Full Moon. As we continue to Learn, Study and Pray in truth we move closer to Alohym and forward in service to him. In the book of Beginnings we can see that Alohym made the Sun & Moon with a PURPOSE in creation. The moon was created to divide the day from the night, to be a sign, to govern his appointed time of meeting, to number days and years, and to rule over the night and stars. It was called the lesser LIGHT, in comparison to the sun, the greater LIGHT. What is New Moon: In light of recent events, there seem to be somewhat of a confusion as to when New Moon is, what Chodesh is and how this relates to the appointed times of our Creator. So, to keep it very simple, let’s begin with New Moon. In Hebrew, the word for NEW is: Chadash. This word varies depending on how it’s used. When it’s used as a VERB, CHADASH H2318 is then used to describe the Verb. When this verb is used in Conjunction with the Moon, its s describing an event that’s taking place. The Moon is: REBUILDING AND/OR REPAIRNG its light.
