ALMAS EN EL CAMINO Al mismo tiempo que Kurosawa y Mizoguchi triunfaban en Occidente modelando por medio de sus ficciones de época el imaginario de la llamada Edad de Oro, el todavía “desconocido” Mikio Naruse afrontó provisto únicamente de las herramientas propias del melodrama el que sería uno de los proyectos más influyentes y renovadores de la Historia del cine japonés: la adaptación póstuma de cinco de las principales obras de la novelista Fumiko Hayashi. Una de las representantes más destaca- das de la josei-bungaku [literatura de mujeres] de primera mitad del XX y excepcional cronista de la cotidianidad nipona de posguerra, fallecida de forma prematura el 28 de junio de 1951 a la edad de 47 años. Poeta y prosista vinculada en sus inicios a los movimientos de izquierda y colaboracionista activa del régimen imperial Shōwa –para el que tra- bajó como corresponsal en labores propagandistas durante la guerra–, su producción literaria supo conectar con el espíritu de una feminidad doblemente castigada por las secuelas de la bomba atómica y las nor- mas sociales impuestas según los principios confucianos de humildad, abnegación, dulzura, sumisión y paciencia que habían definido desde el Meiji el ideal de mujer japonesa: la Yamato nadeshiko [literalmente, clavel japonés]. El cuestionamiento de aquel modelo patriarcal promo- vido por los poderes fácticos mediante manuales de buena conducta como el Onna no Daigaku, y su sustitución por un nuevo tipo de mu- jer –bautizado peyorativamente por la masculinidad dominante como atarashii-onna– constituiría la punta de lanza de una revolución cultural iniciada a finales del XIX por autoras como Ichiyō Higuchi, y actualiza- da por Hayashi en el marco de la incipiente sociedad de los salaryman [ejecutivos de bajo rango].

Two Masters of Japanese Cinema: Kaneto Shindo & Kozaburo Yoshimura Part
PRESS RELEASE: May 2012 12/26 Two Masters of Japanese Cinema: Kaneto Shindo & Kozaburo Yoshimura at BFI Southbank in June and July 2012 April 2012 marks the 100th birthday of Kaneto Shindo, one of the leading talents in post-war Japanese film. Throughout June and July BFI Southbank will host a two-part retrospective which pays tribute both to Shindo himself and to his friend, colleague and contemporary Kozaburo Yoshimura (1911- 2000), one of the neglected masters of classical Japanese film. June’s programme focuses primarily on the 1950s, the period when their collaboration was closest. Yoshimura and Shindo’s work together constitute a revealing social history and include some of Japanese cinema’s most powerful and moving films. Beginning with a Season Introduction on Wed 6 June by the season’s curator Alexander Jacoby (Lecturer in Japanese Studies at Oxford Brookes University), Jacoby will explore the collaboration between Shindo and Yoshimura situating their work in the social, political and cinematic context of a rapidly changing post-war Japan. Shindo is a versatile director, skilled screenwriter and pioneer of independent production who has astonishingly remained active into very recent years, releasing his latest film, Postcard, at the age of 98. Under contract to Shochiku studios as respectively director and screenwriter, Yoshimura and Shindo initiated a fruitful collaboration with The Ball at the Anjo House (1947), a Chekhovian study of the decline of the pre-war aristocracy, which scooped the top prize in the critics’ poll conducted that year by the leading Japanese film magazine, Kinema Junpo. But both men found their creativity inhibited at Shochiku, and by the early 1950s had established their own independent production company, Kindai Eiga Kyokai.

His best-known films remain his samurai epics Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, but his intimate dramas, such as Ikiru and High and Low, are just as searing. The first serious phase of Kurosawa’s career came during the postwar era, with Drunken Angel and Stray Dog, gritty dramas about people on the margins of society that featured the first notable appearances by Toshiro Mifune, the director’s longtime leading man. Kurosawa would subsequently gain international fame with Rashomon, a breakthrough in nonlinear narrative and sumptuous visuals.
