(iv) The supervisor organises an induction session to provide OH&S guidelines and training and to work through the risk assessment process with the student. (v) The student and academic staff supervisor timetable 3 meetings (including the direct supervisor, if different) – one to agree on the scope of work at the start, one a mid-subject progress review, and one at the end to discuss the student’s performance and outcomes. (vi) The Head of School signs off on the Internship agreement. These subjects will be assessed as “satisfactory/unsatisfactory”, rather than being graded. Satisfactory performance will be based on: (i) completing the OH&S induction and risk assessment; (ii) completing the requisite hours of laboratory or field work as recorded in the work book and signed off by the direct supervisor, and attending all three scheduled meetings with the supervisor(s); (iii) attending at least six research seminars, and recording details of results and methods in the work book, signed off by the direct supervisor; (iv) satisfactorily completing an end-of-project paper critically reflecting on outcomes in relation to research objectives set at start of internship, and using newly gained experience to assess the completeness and effectiveness of published methods in the field [this paper is to be the basis for the final meeting with the supervisor(s)]. 7.7 DOUBLE DEGREES Double degrees are facilitated, to a large extent, by the flexibility of degrees with majors and elective subjects such as the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Arts, as a major in these degrees can be completed with less than the 144 credit points required to complete a 3-year degree program. Students completing double degrees should review the detailed course information in the University’s Online Course Handbook: www.uow.edu.au/handbook and seek advice from Academic Advisers in both Faculties. A student may be able to undertake a prescribed major (e.g. Medical Biotechnology, see Section 7.2 for further Information about prescribed majors) within a double degree. The contents of the major will be defined in consultation within the Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning). Some prescribed majors have too many core subjects to be completed within 90 credit points and can only be undertaken if a student is willing to exceed the 90 credit points of Science schedule subjects and total credit points required for their double degree. Students interested in completing the Environment major as part of a double degree can follow the program of study outlined at the end of this section.
