Basal abelisaurid and carcharodontosaurid theropods from the Lower Cretaceous Elrhaz Formation of Niger. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 53 (1): 15–46. We report the discovery of basal abelisaurid and carcharodontosaurid theropods from the mid Cretaceous (Aptian– Albian, ca. 112 Ma) Elrhaz Formation of the Niger Republic. The abelisaurid, Kryptops palaios gen. et sp. nov., is repre− sented by a single individual preserving the maxilla, pelvic girdle, vertebrae and ribs. Several features, including a maxilla textured externally by impressed vascular grooves and a narrow antorbital fossa, clearly place Kryptops palaios within Abelisauridae as its oldest known member. The carcharodontosaurid, Eocarcharia dinops gen. et sp. nov., is repre− sented by several cranial bones and isolated teeth. Phylogenetic analysis places it as a basal carcharodontosaurid, similar to Acrocanthosaurus and less derived than Carcharodontosaurus and Giganotosaurus. The discovery of these taxa sug− gests that large body size and many of the derived cranial features of abelisaurids and carcharodontosaurids had already evolved by the mid Cretaceous. The presence of a close relative of the North American genus Acrocanthosaurus on Af− rica suggests that carcharodontosaurids had already achieved a trans−Tethyan distribution by the mid Cretaceous. Ungual morphology has been used recently to argue for the coexistence of two distinct ornithomimosaurs, a basal taxon and distinctly more derived taxon, in the Early Cretaceous Arundel Clay of Maryland, USA. However, these conclusions are based on misconceptions of the morphology and positional variability of ornithomimosaur unguals. Some characters previously cited as diagnostic of ornithomimosaur unguals are not actually observed in this clade, or are more homoplastically distributed among theropods. Other characters proposed to distinguish between the two pedal ungual morphs in the Arundel Clay material are shown in the Albertan ornithomimid material to consistently distinguish the dif- ferent ungual positions within the pes of one individual. Claims of multiple distinct ornithomimosaur taxa in the Arundel Clay are premature, as the two pedal ungual morphotypes more likely represent positional variation in a single taxon. Research on some theropod dinosaur bones from this layer has indicated the presence of two ornithomimosaur taxa in the assemblage. However, a recent paper discussed issues with the definite assignment of any of these unguals to Ornithomimosauria and suggested that morphological differences originally interpreted to be indicative of the presence of two ornithomimosaurs could be explained by positional variation. Here, I show that substantial evidence persists for the presence of two ornithomimosaurs in the Arundel Clay assemblage, even considering the recent description of positional variation in ornithomimosaur pedal unguals. Furthermore, the argument against the confident assignment of these unguals to ornithomimosaurs is shown to be based on oversimplified comparisons that do not take into account the combination of features in the Arundel specimens that allow for their assignment to that clade. Although several small points made in the initial paper describing the Arundel specimens are incorrect or unsubstantiated, the differences between the Maryland unguals are outside the spectrum of positional variation and are indicative of the presence of two ornithomimosaurs in the Arundel Clay assemblage. FOSSIL CLUB OF LEE COUNTY AUGUST 2016 Letter from the President Last month we had a small problem with the newsletter, so I hope this one gets to you this month! I believe that eventually all current members got theirs last month, but it was a bit difficult to get it forwarded, and if you missed it, I apologize! Remember, you can always access the newsletters from the club website: www.fcolc.com Last month one of our long time members, Gunther Lobisch, gave a terrific fossil presentation. He spoke about his personal experiences and stories about fossil collecting. Gunther also brought a large assortment of quality fossils to show and tell and members were encouraged to view them up close. This is the type of activities that help us all learn. Seeing the actual fossil in person is the very best way to learn identification. That is one reason we always encourage show and tell at each meeting. Please do not be shy, but bring in your fossils so others can see them. The October 15 fossil hunt at Mosaic is close to being filled up. We are awarded one trip a year, at their discretion, and ask that members who want to go to please attend the meetings so as to be able to sign up to go. We are allowed only 30 spots, so if you cannot make the monthly meetings to sign up you probably won't be able to go. Sorry, but the trip is very limited. Up to date the Romualdo Member (Aptian/Albian) of the Santana Formation yielded six theropod specimens. To those we add the description of a sequence of three posterior sacral and six anterior caudal vertebrae with three chevrons (MN 4743-V). Differences between MN 4743-V and members of the major theropod clades such as Ceratosauria, Allosauroidea and Coelorusauria do not allow its assignment to one of those groups. Instead, MN 4743-V is referred to the Spinosauroidea (Spinosauridae plus Torvosauridae), based on the presence of three robust laminae below the transverse process of the anterior caudals, which delimit three fossae. The lack of paired processes on the chevrons suggest that within Spinosauroidea MN 4743-V is a member of the Spinosauridae. This is congruent with previous findings of spinosaurids in the Romualdo Member. MN 4743-V differs from the remaining specimens that present sacrocaudal elements indicating the co-existence of at least five theropod species in this deposit. Spinosaurs (family Spinosauridae) are large to giant carnivorous dinosaurs that have been familiar to a wide audience since the third film in the Jurassic Park series at the latest. Spinosaurs were often larger than Tyrannosaurus rex! They have a long crocodile-like skull and conical teeth that are also reminiscent of crocodiles. The animals probably ate large fish but also other dinosaurs. Spinosaurs were found almost all over the world, and so some time ago teeth were found in Thailand, which were named Siamosaurus suteethorni. Teeth are, however, hardly suitable for determining the species and so the validity of this spinosaur species has often been questioned since the remains of the skeleton have never been discovered. "When I was a doctoral student at the University of Bonn, I found a tail piece made of eight vertebrae lying unnoticed in a drawer in the Sirindhorn Museum in Thailand," says Dr. Adun Samathi, head of the project.
