Quick Guide to Running a Switch-Off Fortnight Campaign

Quick Guide to running a Switch-Off Fortnight campaign Switch Off Fortnight is a fun way to bring the energy topic to life and inspire students to think about how much energy they use. The campaign can be led by students to help boost their confidence – and it could reduce your school’s energy bills too.

Download the Goodbye Standby or Switch On to Switching Off lesson plan for your age group. For more curriculum-linked resources, download the Switch Off Fortnight curriculum guide for your region.

For a fun introduction to the topic, play the Power Patrol game and race against the switching off lights, or the Switch Off Fortnight film featuring Busta.

Distribute copies of the Energy Audit (also at the end of the two lesson plans) and divide your group into two teams. Give one team the task of doing an undercover audit to find lights left on or appliances in standby.

The team have the task of marketing Switch Off Fortnight to the school. They could use the Switch Off Fortnight assemblies to open and close the campaign, decorate the school with posters and encourage every class to get on board with the Taking part poster. Why not also hold a No Electricity ?

Run a second survey to see if people have changed their behaviour. Use the same Energy Audit as before and upload your before and after data to your My School / Group page. This will tell you how much energy your school could save over a longer period.

Send the switch off message home by encouraging students to carry out an undercover Energy Mission and sharing the Save energy at home factsheet.

If your students are inspired to do more, the Big Energy Show lesson plan is an effective way to track your school’s energy use over the , or play the Greedy Guzzlers game to discover which appliances use the most energy.
