Samuel Loterte, SSS Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, St. Joseph School Country Fair Peace! Saturday, October 3 We all know that the Lord is a God of infinite goodness and generosity. He showers graces that are more than we ever deserve. He sends us His Spirit who blows where he wills., giving charisms and gifts to men and women, even to Religious Education: those whom we think are undeserving. In return, God invites us to receive every- thing as a gift and to be happy in his generosity. No R.E. classes on Sun- The Catechism of the Catholic Church, n.800 tells us, ―Charisms are to be ac- day October 4 and Sun- cepted with gratitude by the person who receives them, and by all members of day October 11 the Church as well. They are a wonderfully rich grace for the apostolic vitality and for the holiness of the entire Body of Christ.‖ PPAC Meeting Since each one of us has received gifts from the same Spirit, we are to share these gifts to the betterment of the mission of Jesus. We need to help each other Tuesday September 29 to accomplish wonderful things for God‘s kingdom. 6:00 PM God bless you all, Fr. Samuel E. Loterte, SSS Pastor Prayer for the Week Almighty God, You are present with those who perform great deeds In the name of your Son, Jesus Christ. Remove all jealousy that comes from our hearts. Enable us to see people and things from your perspective. Remove whatever leads us away from you And draw all men and women into the circle of your kingdom. Amen. Reflection Question: What it is that keeps me or blocks me from truly following Jesus? What is the canonization process? Canonization follows a rigorous examination of the person’s life and reputation for holiness, and miracles attributed to the person’s intercession. Canonization is preceded by beatification, an honor Damien received from Pope John Paul II in Brussels on June 4, 1995. Beatification gave Damien the title of “Blessed.” Both beatification and canonization require a documented miracle. Damien’s miracle for beatification was the overnight healing 100 years ago of a French nun who was close to death from an intestinal ailment. The second miracle was the disappearance of cancer from the lungs of Audrey Toguchi, a retired Oahu public school teacher in 1999. fatherdamien.com 2 Sunday Reflection: http://mycatholicfaith.org/ WELCOME JEALOUS CHRISTIANS TO OUR "Are you jealous?" –Numbers 11:29 VISITORS People who have been given a new life in Jesus and are filled with the Spirit seem especially tempted to spiritual jealousy. They're jealous of Eldad and Medad prophe- sying (Nm 11:29), of Moses leading (Nm 12:1), of a stranger expelling demons (Mk 9:38), or of John and James trying to get a "spiritual" promotion (Mt 20:24). Scripture Readings The Lord does not tolerate spiritual jealousy. Miriam became a snow-white leper af- ter her outbreak of jealousy against Moses (Nm 12:10). Jesus said that being drowned Sunday, September 27 or maimed is preferable to falling into the sin of spiritual jealousy (Mk 9:42-47). The Nm 11:25-29 first murder was committed because of spiritual jealousy. Cain was jealous that Ps 19:8, 10, 12-14 Abel's offering was accepted by God and his own wasn't (Gn 4:4-5). Jesus was cruci- Jas 5:1-6 fied because of the jealousy of the religious leaders (Mt 27:18). The Jews of Antioch Mk 9:38-43, 45, 47-48 in Pisidia persecuted Paul and Barnabas because of jealousy (Acts 13:45). Monday, September 28 Some of history's worst sins can be attributed to spiritual jealousy. Resist any tempta- Zec 8:1-8 tions to jealousy, and repent of any sins of jealousy. Ps 102:2, 16-23 Lk 9:46-50 Tuesday, September 29 Dn 7:9-10, 13-14 or Rv 12:7- PRAYER: Father, may I rejoice that others are more gifted 12ab Ps 138:1-5 and more honored than I am. Jn 1:47-51 PROMISE: "Any man who gives you a drink of water because Wednesday, September 30 you belong to Christ will not, I assure you, go Neg 2:1-8 without his reward." –Mk 9:41 Ps 137:1-6 Lk 9:57-62 PRAISE: Praise You, Jesus, the risen Lord! You are "merciful and gracious...slow to anger and abound- Thursday, October 1 ing in kindness" (Ps 103:8). Mahalo and God bless you all! 4 St. Damien De Veuster, from Tremeloo to Hilo submitted by Dr. Stephen Woo St. Damien De Veuster, from Tremeloo to Hilo The canonization of a saint is an occasion for joy and gratitude, and if the saint had lived in our land the joy is multiplied many fold So it is with Blessed Damien whose elevation to sainthood on October 11,2009, is a source of pride to all Hawaii. For us on the Big Island and especially of St. Joseph Parish it is a special blessing, for indeed he was and is "one of us. " Joseph De Veuster-His Early Years A chill breeze swirled up the banks of the ice-bound Laah River and swept through Tremeloo, a village of 1,600 in northern Belgium. Among the steep tiled roofs was the two story red brick home of Frans De Veuster, a successful farmer and father of six. On the morning of January 3, 1840 he, his children and his cousin Joseph Goovaerts from Antwerp, waited excitedly for the unfolding of events in an upstairs bedroom.

Strenna 2019 «So that my joy may be in you » (Jn 15,11) HOLINESS FOR YOU TOO My Dear Brothers and Sisters, my Dear Salesian Family, Continuing our century-old tradition, at the beginning of this New Year 2019 I address myself to each one of you, in every part of the “Salesian world” that as the Salesian Family we constitute in more than 140 countries. I do so while giving a commentary on a subject very familiar to us, with a title taken directly from the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis on the call to holiness in today’s world: Gaudete et Exsultate1. In choosing this subject and this title I want to translate into our own language and in the light of our charismatic sensitivity the strong appeal to holiness that Pope Francis has addressed to the whole Church.2 Therefore I want to emphasise those points that are typically “our own” in the context of our Salesian spirituality, those shared by all the 31 groups of our Salesian Family as the charismatic inheritance received from the Holy Spirit through/by means of our beloved Father Don Bosco, who will certainly help us to live our lives with the same deep joy that comes from the Lord: «So that my joy may be in you » (Jn 15,11). To whom are these words addressed? I can assure you that they are addressed to everyone. To all of you my dear Salesian confreres SDB. To all of you sisters and brothers of the various different congregations and institutes of consecrated and lay life in our Salesian Family.
