Dr. Sipiora led me through this explorative process, all the while reminding me of stative verbs and deductive claims. Excited to take this project on when others might not be so keen to do so, Dr. Sipiora recounted his personal experiences working with Hugh Hefner and guided me through my dissertation chapter by chapter, sentence by sentence. I also want to thank my interdisciplinary committee for its leadership and invaluable suggestions. Humanities and American Studies professor, Dr. Andrew Berish made this dissertation a do-able project by suggesting that I scale down the scope of my original idea; Dr. Berish offered me the confidence to move forward using Playboy as my primary source. And from this project’s inception, Dr. Johnson has always asked me the tough and practical questions—those answers will shape my future research. His historical scholarship on the Cold War’s Lavender Scare made me realize that the roots of my fascination with Cold War literature were grounded in post-war political and sexual turmoil. Dr. Diane Price Herndl’s willingness to take on this project, at so late a date, is nothing in comparison to her careful comments, suggestions for revision, and compassion. Her work with Cold War literary criticism and reading suggestions helped me understand why the Cold War is a legitimate field of study for literary scholars. At the culmination of my graduate career, I need to thank my professors, department members, and colleagues. I argue that the literature Playboy includes has always been a necessary feature to creating its masculinity model; however, that very literature often destabilizes the magazine’s grand narrative because it presents readers with alternative models of masculinity. To make that argument, I presume five things: 1) masculinity, like femininity, is a construct; 2) the mid-century masculinity crisis should be attributed to redefinitions of space and sexuality; 3) the crisis generated a variety of masculinity models; 4) Playboy presents its own, unified model of masculinity through its editorial features; and 5) finally, that Playboy should be considered an early Cold War artifact because the space Playboy magazine represents, dually domestic and privatized, is hardly trivial—decade after decade, it has absorbed society’s shifts and reflected them back to readers. There’s a Midwest tinge to it, but, most notably, it booms, which can be intimidating to the fact-checking interns in the cubicles across the hall. The figure attached to the voice seems illusive at times. When rounding the corner, it’s hard not to take a glimpse into his wide-windowed office to see if his sharp eyes are focused on the computer screen. Sometimes, for days at a time, his office stays dark — empty. But Daniel Brogan’s imprint at 5280 magazine is always evident. In 1993, with a degree in journalism from Indiana University and 10 years of professional experience, he founded the Denver city book. From the beginning, the magazine was deemed doomed. Brogan remembers hearing the buzz around town. Businesses were making bets to see how soon Denver’s newest city magazine would fold — just like the ones that came before it. Certainly, with such a track record, it wouldn’t take long. Brogan proved them wrong, though, and service journalism helped keep the new magazine afloat. And I’m one of those fact-checking interns who, at times, find Brogan’s voice intimidating. For the past four months, I’ve served as 5280’s editorial dining intern, and I’ve fact-checked stories, written blog posts and print stories while also creating the ever- so-exciting calendar events and dining guide blurbs.

This article tells the history of the midlife crisis, for the first time. Today, the idea of midlife crisis conjures up images of male indulgence and irresponsibility, but it was first successfully promoted as a feminist concept that applied to men and women equally and described the dissolution of gender roles at the onset of middle age. Although the term was coined by the psychologist Elliott Jaques in the s, it only came into general use two decades later with journalist Gail Sheehy’s bestselling Passages (), as a concept that relied on older understandings of middle age as a welcome ‘release’ from motherhood and domesticity. The feminist origins of the midlife crisis suggest, first, that journalistic publishing can be more significant for the history of an idea than spe- cialists’ theories, even if those precede it. Secondly and more importantly, it sheds new light on Susan Sontag’s classic analysis of the ‘double standard of aging’ by making visible how women used the notion of midlife change to undermine gender hierarchies. One might not have expected the history of the midlife crisis to begin with a shocking scene from a notorious massacre, still less that a woman would tell the tale.

The new hiring guidelines will re-establish the "traditional policy" of hiring more assistant and asso­ ciate professors, White said last week. The policy went into effect during last year's recruit­ ment process, he said. Approximately 28 out of 30 faculty hired last year were on the assistant or associate professor levels. Each of the past several years, White has he asked departments to submit names of distinguished profes­ sors, or "targets of opportunity," whom they would rec­ ommend for hiring by the University. Trinity College would then make serious efforts to recruit the named professors, partly by offering competitive salaries, he said. The former policy was intended to bring about a "major and rapid" change in the number of distinguished professors at Trinity, White said. The presence of distin­ guished professors, whom White called "magnet faculty," helps in recruiting highly qualified junior facul­ ty, he said. Introduction In April 1981, when What We Talk About When We Talk About Love appeared, Raymond Carver was still little known to wider audiences and few could predict that he was soon to be acclaimed as the “American Chekhov” and the father of literary Minimalism. Yet, those seventeen short fragments managed to reinvigorate the realistic trend of the short-story with their spare and laconic portrait of small-town America: a portrait free of condescendence, irony, or denunciation, yet full of hopeless desolation. That collection’s pared-down narrative has come to represent for many readers Raymond Carver’s stylistic trademark, although it undeniably marks a “minimalistic” peak in his career, and a point of no return.1 It is precisely in relation to that minimalism that we shall reconsider the role played in the collection’s final output by Gordon Lish, Carver’s longtime editor and friend. To do so, we shall analyze the scope and the extent of Lish’s editorial work on the collection, as it is now visible in the archives of the Lilly Library at Indiana University.2 2.     Gordon Lish and his Influence Gordon Lish is perhaps best known as the authoritative, and thus controversial, editor of Raymond Carver, among numerous other authors. This characterization however, does a grave injustice to the scope of Lish’s influence. Indeed, I would argue that no man has had a greater influence on the today’s literary landscape. A prolific author in his own right, Lish also served as editor, publisher, and teacher to some of the most significant voices of the latter‐half of the 20th century, as well as those of the 21st . With Lish, American publishing saw an unprecedented (and since unduplicated) output of challenging art by a major corporation, the occurrence of which came as direct result of one man’s artistic vision. It is these books, which Lish published, wrote, or otherwise influenced, which are the subject of my collection. In 1977, Gordon Lish left his position as Senior Editor of Esquire Magazine and accepted a job of the same title at Alfred A. Knopf. He worked at Knopf for eighteen years until parting ways in 1995, having assembled what is arguably one of the greatest editorial runs in the history of publishing. During these eighteen years Lish published many of the most memorable voices in contemporary fiction, many of whom he published for the first time. Among the authors who Lish brought into publication are: Raymond Carver, Don Delillo, Amy Hempel, Barry Hannah, Cynthia Ozick, Joy Williams, and Umass’s own, Noy Holland. What is perhaps most notable about Lish’s time at Knopf however, is the level of freedom he was given in determining what Knopf would publish.
