About Sardinia Sardinia is known as one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It is an ancient land, rich in history and culture, and characterised by its largely wild and uncontaminated natural landscape. The historic and archaeological heritage of Sardinia, its nature, ancient traditions, local products and the culinary tradition all contribute to make this Island one among the most popular holiday destinations in the country. Sardinia has a surface of 24,089 km2, a population of approximately 1’600’000 inhabitants. The capital city is Cagliari. a. Sassari Sassari is the second Sardinian city. It lies on a range of hills overlooking the strait between Northern Sardinia and the Southern coast of Corsica, at 225 metres above sea level. The town was founded around the 9th-10th century AD by the inhabitants of the ancient Roman port of Turris Lybisonis (current Porto Torres). Over time, Sassari has been ruled by the Genoese, the Pisans, the Aragonese, the Catalans, the Spanish, the Austrians, and eventually by the Piedmont Savoia kings, until the Unification of Italy in 1861. The weather in Sassari is tipically Mediterranean. Sassari is the main city in the northwest of Sardinia. The Island can be reached either by sea or by air transportation. The nearest seaport is Porto Torres (about 20 Km from Sassari). Ferries run from Genoa and Civitavecchia (Rome). The nearest airport is the Alghero Airport (35 km from Sassari); alternatively, you can reach the city of Olbia (which is located at 150 km distance), or Cagliari (about 225 km from Sassari) and get to Sassari by car, by train, or by bus. The bus terminal in Sassari is located in Via Padre Zirano. More info about transport in Sardinia will be give in 6th paragraph. b. The University of Sassari In 2011-12 the University of Sassari celebrated its 450th academic year. The University of Sassari owes its foundation to Alessio Fontana, a clerk at Emperor Charles V's chancellery, who in 1558 donated his belongings to the municipality of Sassari for the establishment of a college in this town. In 1559 the first Jesuits arrived to Sassari and in 1562 the first courses were taught. During the following years a “University House” was established, and in 1617 King Philip III acknowledged the status of first Royal University of Sardinia to the Jesuit college of Sassari. Today, the University of Sassari offers multiple education degrees at the undergraduate, graduate, master and PhD level; hosts 703 researchers and professors distributed among 11 Faculties, 30 departments, 22 libraries, and over 40 institutes and research centres; over 15’000 students are enrolled in the University of Sassari. 4. • Comuni Dell'anglona E Gallura Che Abbracciano La Bassa Valle Del Coghinas Valledoria

  • The Impeded Archipelago of Corsica and Sardinia
Island Studies Journal, 16(1), 2021, 325-342 The impeded archipelago of Corsica and Sardinia Marcel A. Farinelli Independent researcher [email protected] Abstract: Sardinia (Italy) and Corsica (France) are two islands divided by a strait that is 13 km wide. Their inhabitants have had commercial and cultural links at least since the Bronze Age, facing similar historical processes such as colonization from mainland powers during Middle Ages and a problematic assimilation within the nation-states to which the islands are nowadays associated. Nevertheless, they are generally perceived and analyzed as separate and distant islands. This is a consequence of the geopolitical context of the last three centuries, during which Corsica and Sardinia have become part of two separate states marked by a troubled relationship. This study has two main purposes: explaining the case of the two islands through a historical analysis of the island-to-island relationship between the 17th and 21st Centuries and proposing the concept of ‘impeded archipelago’ to describe analogous situations. Keywords: archipelago, Corsica, islands, island-to-island relationship, nationalism, Sardinia https://doi.org/10.24043/isj.142 • Received August 2020, accepted December 2020 © Island Studies Journal, 2021 Introduction Few scholars have adopted an archipelagic perspective on Corsica (France) and Sardinia (Italy), albeit the strait that divides them (The Strait of Bonifacio) in its narrow point is 13 km wide. Sardinians and Corsicans have had economic and cultural ties at least since the Bronze Age, they experienced colonization from continental powers during Middle Ages and Modern Era, and they shared a problematic integration process in the mainland country to which they are linked with since the 18th and 19th Centuries.

  • Eni Starts Production at 31-MW Photovoltaic Plant on Porto Torres Industrial Site, Sassari
Eni starts production at 31-MW photovoltaic plant on Porto Torres industrial site, Sassari Porto Torres (Sassari), 10 February 2020 – Eni New Energy, a subsidiary of Eni, has opened its new photovoltaic park in Porto Torres. The plant has a capacity of 31 MW and was developed on areas owned by Eni Rewind, Eni’s environmental company, within the Porto Torres Site of National Interest. The areas were deemed suitable for repurpose and therefore for the installation of the photovoltaic park, with the endorsement of all relevant institutions and permission by the Ministry of the Environment. The plant is expected to generate 50 GWh of power every year, of which about 70% is for self-consumption by users connected to Versalis's network. Currently, this is the biggest plant built as part of Eni's Progetto Italia, launched by Eni in 2016, and it’s the second developed by Eni in Sardinia, after the first Assemini (Cagliari) project led by Eni Rewind on requalified areas. The project encompasses the whole of Italy and aims to develop and re-use owned industrial areas to build renewable energy power stations. This is in line with Eni's strategy for the energy transition and with the goals of the Italian National Integrated Plan for Energy and Climate. Three years from the start of Progetto Italia this plant is a major milestone in the growth of renewable energy at Eni and brings its installed photovoltaic capacity to over 80 MW, generated by 13 plants in five regions. The project also involves several compensation works, including energy and environmental projects in Porto Torres, such as supplying lighting to the village of Cala d’Oliva in the island of Asinara.
