Before Newfoundland: Maud Karpeles in Canada Maud Karpeles (1885-1976) is best known for her Connecticut, and elsewhere in New England. She folksong collecting with Cecil Sharp in the also collected mumming play and dance tunes in Southern Appalachians, her biography of Sharp, Gloucestershire that year. In 1928 she collected and her work for the International Folk Music folksongs in Glamorgan, and then went hunting for Council. During 1929 and 1930 she made two mumming plays and dance tunes in Devon. The purpose of this research, presented at the Conference sectional meeting, is to trace peculiarities of transformation of British folk medieval ballads, which were brought to the Southern Appalachians in the east of the USA by British immigrants at the end of the XVIIIth – beginning of the XIXth century and retained by their descendants, through analyzing certain texts on the levels of motifs, dramatis personae, composition, style and artistic means, as well as to outline relevant Ukrainian parallels. The analysis of such ballads, plot types and epic songs was carried out: 1) British № 10: “The Twa Sisters” (21 variants); American “The Two Sisters”(5 variants) and Ukrainian plot type I – C-5: “the elder sister drowns the younger one because of envy and jealousy” (8 variants); 2) British № 26: The Three Ravens” (2), “The Twa Corbies” (2); American “The Three Ravens” (1), “The Two Crows”(1) and Ukrainian epic songs with the motif of lonely death of a Cossack warrior on the steppe (4). In our study British traditional ballads are classified according to the grouping worked out by the American scholar Francis Child (305 numbers), Ukrainian folk ballads – the plot-thematic catalogue developed by the Ukrainian folklorist Оleksiy Dey (here 288 plots are divided into 3 spheres, cycles and plot types). -

Roy Dommett and Keith Chandler in particular have been very active in collecting morris history , notating and filming dances - their efforts have been wonderful but who is coming on to replace them ? What sort of repertoire should teams be looking for? Are the jig teams right in looking especiall y at the perfomance side of the dance to attract - and hold - the attention of the potential audience when there are so many competing calls on their eyes and ears ( and money!) - even if it's only the special offer at the supermarket that you are dancing outside. -

Francis Shergold 1918 - 2008
Francis Shergold 1918 - 2008 Francis Shergold died on November 27th, just two months shy of his 90th birthday. He was widely known in the folk world as long-time leader of the morris dance side at Bampton in Oxfordshire, a position honoured some years ago by the EFDSS when awarding him their Gold Badge. When he first started dancing, in 1935, there was only one active morris team, that led by William 'Jingy' Wells. During his active career he saw the brief reactivation and subsequent demise (after Whitsun 1941) of the second team, led by the Tanner family; the breaking away by Arnold Woodley in 1950 to form a second side composed mostly of young boys, which continued until the end of that decade; the regrouping of that set (now with grown men) in 1970, so that, once again, two sides were competing for dance spots on Whit Monday; and, finally (to bring the situation up to the present), the breakaway group from the Woodleys in 1974, to form another set, which led to the situation of three distinct teams out and about on the dancing Monday. I rehearse all this to highlight a kind of ironic paradox. When he first joined there were half a dozen active dancers. By 1959 there was so little interest in the custom that he was forced to take out a set with only four men, using outsiders from the folk revival as musician and fool. On Spring Bank Holiday Monday this year there were more than fifty dancers spread between the three teams. -
