    Francis Shergold 1918 - 2008 Francis Shergold died on November 27th, just two months shy of his 90th birthday. He was widely known in the folk world as long-time leader of the morris dance side at Bampton in Oxfordshire, a position honoured some years ago by the EFDSS when awarding him their Gold Badge. When he first started dancing, in 1935, there was only one active morris team, that led by William 'Jingy' Wells. During his active career he saw the brief reactivation and subsequent demise (after Whitsun 1941) of the second team, led by the Tanner family; the breaking away by Arnold Woodley in 1950 to form a second side composed mostly of young boys, which continued until the end of that decade; the regrouping of that set (now with grown men) in 1970, so that, once again, two sides were competing for dance spots on Whit Monday; and, finally (to bring the situation up to the present), the breakaway group from the Woodleys in 1974, to form another set, which led to the situation of three distinct teams out and about on the dancing Monday. I rehearse all this to highlight a kind of ironic paradox. When he first joined there were half a dozen active dancers. By 1959 there was so little interest in the custom that he was forced to take out a set with only four men, using outsiders from the folk revival as musician and fool. On Spring Bank Holiday Monday this year there were more than fifty dancers spread between the three teams.

    1 One Musician, Two Collectors, Different Results: Sam Bennett as collected by Cecil Sharp and James Madison Carpenter Elaine Bradtke Originally presented at the American Folklore Society's Annual Meeting, Québec, Canada, October 17-21, 2002. Updated October 27 2008. Sam Bennett was born in Ilmington on 5 November 1865, to James and Martha Bennett, the 6th of 12 children. He lived in his native village to the venerable age of 85. Bennett was a fruit grower and seller by trade and he diversified into related work such as ladder-building and hauling. Small of stature and bow-legged, he was nevertheless vigorous throughout his life. He was famous locally for his ability at mowing, and he demonstrated his continued robust health by dancing a jig at his eightieth birthday party.1 At seventeen he was given a second-hand fiddle and he immediately began to seek out people who could teach him tunes. The local pipe and tabor player taught him the Ilmington morris tunes,2 and Bennett also learned the Bampton morris tunes from an itinerant Oxfordshire fiddle player. Bennett became an active member of the Ilmington morris dancers in the 1887 revival and continued to perform, teach, and accompany the display dances of the region for many decades. During his long life, he played the fiddle, sang, danced, and taught traditional dancing in Wales, Devon, and London.3 He instructed children in maypole, social and morris dancing, and could be found performing at most local celebrations. Bennett could not read music, but had an excellent memory. He took a lively interest in village life and customs, and sought to learn material from other tradition bearers.

This paper explores some of Sharp's ideas and motivations using three distinct types of source material, published writing, film and inspection notebooks. These different types of evidence are investigated to give a rounded view of Sharp‟s project within the cultural climate of his day, particularly his idea of providing a „healthier‟, educationally positive and racially rooted alternative to commercial popular music and its associated dance forms. How possible is it to understand an artistic and social movement many years after those who participated in it have died? Such understanding as we attain will always be partial, incomplete and mediated by our own attitudes, presumptions and prejudices. If the search for a full understanding is unrealistic, that does not mean that there are not better and worse accounts of the past. In this paper, three distinct types of evidence will be examined to try to illuminate and understand something of Cecil Sharp's ideas about folk dance and his contribution to dance education in schools and the wider society.

To the south and east it is hemmed in by the Shannon estuary and Lough Derg, while to the north and northwest it is cut off by the uplands of Sliabh Aughty and the lunar landscape of the Burren. Human history in Clare began around 4000 BC, when the first Neolithic farmers arrived in the Burren karst. Speckled with over seven thousand archaeological sites—among them Bronze Age tombs, Iron Age forts, and Early Christian churches—Clare has been a research cornucopia for legions of archaeologists and natural historians since the close of the nineteenth century. The area was also layered with Viking, Norman, Eliza- bethan, and Cromwellian settlements, all of which left lasting imprints on the topography of the county. Few periods in Clare history, however, can compare with the social and psychological trauma of the Great Famine of the mid-nineteenth century.

    IRONIC DANCING ABSOLON IN THE MILLER’S TALE Margaret Jennings, C.S.J. Given recent critical attention to Chaucer’s comic mechanics and to 2 the relationship between characterization and syntax, one should beware the poet's devoting three of twenty-five lines of suspended narration to Absolon the Dancer: In twenty manere coude he trippe and daunce, After the scole of Oxenforde tho, And with his legges casten to and fro. (3328-30) The statement seems straightforward until one remembers the ironic under- pinnings of all Chaucerian description,3 and especially that which details Absolon's overall "perfuming," his pleasure in the ritual of hopeless passion rather than the "solas" of the bedchamber, and his self-image of elegant bourgeoiserie which places him in theory but not in practice far above the villagers. Explorations of Chaucer's range of irony account in large part for scholarly efforts to understand the significance of Absolon's 4 hair, his profession, his various avocations, and his remarkable attire. Indeed, one would expect such a clearly drawn character to have been studied from head to foot. Yet, as in the case of Peter Riga’s e ff i c t i o of his biblical namesake,^ attempts to explain Absolon's presentation fall off markedly from the knees downward. Although Chaucer's characterizations are often said to leap out at the reader, the fact that the dancing Absolon literally does so — casting his legs to and fro — has occasioned little notice. The counterpoint of expectation and actuality in the criticism of these lines is emblematic of the kind of irony they illustrate because in its most mature form verbal irony demands an understanding or even an intimacy between the poet and the more perceptive of his audience.
