Ralph1 6 1Climate Change Cluster, University of Technology Sydney, Australia, NSW 2007 7 2CSIRO Synthetic Biology Future Science Platform, GPO Box 2583, Brisbane, QLD 4001 8 Abstract 9 Sterols are a class of triterpenoid molecules with diverse functional roles in eukaryotic cells, 10 including intracellular signaling and regulation of cell membrane fluidity. Diatoms are a 11 dominant eukaryotic phytoplankton group that produce a wide diversity of sterol compounds. 12 The enzymes 3-hydroxy-3-methyl glutaryl CoA reductase (HMGR) and squalene epoxidase 13 (SQE) have been reported to be rate-limiting steps in sterol biosynthesis in other model 14 eukaryotes; however, the extent to which these enzymes regulate triterpenoid production in 15 diatoms is not known. To probe the role of these two metabolic nodes in the regulation of 16 sterol metabolic flux in diatoms, we independently over-expressed two versions of the native 17 HMGR and a conventional, heterologous SQE gene in the diatoms Thalassiosira pseudonana 18 and Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Overexpression of these key enzymes resulted in significant 19 differential accumulation of downstream sterol pathway intermediates in P.

Sea buckthorn (Hippophaë rhamnoides L.) is a plant with great virtues, containing more than 100 types of compounds. It is a plant with versatile properties, multiple economic advantages and a rich history, which still continues in natural medicine, and it is hence included in the daily diet by more and more people for the prevention and treatment of diet-related diseases. Its uniqueness is due to its chemical composition and the health beneficial properties that rise from its composition. This review is a detailed analytical picture of the current state of knowledge currently available regarding the Hippophaë plant, providing an overview of the qualities of sea buckthorn. This article summarizes data on sea buckthorn’s nutritional value, health beneficial properties, and its applications. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dspendent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image.

Tridemorph The roots of maize (Zea mays L. var LG11) seedlings were watered with has been shown to block the CO2 (26) in suspension cultures of a solution of Tridemorph (2,6-dhmethyl-N-tridecyl-morphollne), a systemic Rubus fruticosus cells, resulting in an accumulation of 9i,B19- fungicide, for 3 to 4 weeks from the onset of germination. Very few A5- cyclopropyl sterols. The results reported here show that, when sterols, the major sterols ofthe control, were detected in the treated plnts, Tridemorph is given to maize plants, 9,8,19-cyclopropyl sterols and 9,8,19-cyckpropyl sterols accumulated dramatically in both roots and accumulate dramatically in roots and leaves, and the usual A5- leaves. A5-sterols were also found when low concentrations of the drug sterols (stigmasterol and sitosterol) are lost accordingly. were used. The time course of the accumulation of the new sterols has been studied in plants treated with various concentrations (1-20 milligrams per liter) of Tridemorph. We found that: (a) cycloeucalenol-obtusifoliol MATERIALS AND METHODS isomerase, an enzyme opening the cyclopropane ring ofcyclopropyl sterols, was strongly Inibited by the drug; and (b) the drug dhfused readily from Plant Material.

During the late log growth phase of U. maydis a novel endogenous sterol metabolite (14x-methyl-ergosta-8,24(28)- dien-3/?,6a-diol) was discovered and analyzed, which accumulates under the influence of the fungicide. The structure of this metabolite points to a hydroxylation-dehydration mechanism for the introduction of the double bond at C-5 during the ergosterol biosynthesis. Introduction investigated, as well as the accumulation of the various sterol intermediates of ergosterol biosyn In the past decade a series of substances have thesis studied after an inhibition time of only a few been discovered that inhibit the biosynthesis of hours. It was of interest for us to follow up the ergosterol. Some of them have been developed as appearance and accumulation of the various sterol fungicides and introduced to practical application. intermediates of ergosterol biosynthesis throughout They include various structural classes, such as the entire growth phase of the fungus under the piperazines (triforine), pyridines (S-1358), pyrimi influence of etaconazole. dines (fenarimol, triarimol), triazoles (triadimefon), and others [1]. More recently, further analogues of one of these classes of compounds, namely the M ethods triazoles, have been developed as plant protection /.

The extraction and analysis processes of phytosterols are complex and have not been fully established. Phytosterols have signicant roles in the areas of foods, nutrition, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Free phytosterols extracted from plant sources are widely used in fortied foods and dietary supplements. Most phytosterols are extracted from plant matrices using organic solvents which are health and environmental hazards. However, the application of supercritical uid in the extraction of phytosterols has oered a promising green technology in overcoming the limitations of conventional extraction. KEYWORDS: Techniques, phytosterols, conventional and non-conventional extraction, health benet Additional information Funding The research was partially supported by research initiative grant scheme [RIGS16-397-0561] of International Islamic University Malaysia.
