Rugby League as a Televised Product in the United States of America By Mike Morris Abstract Rugby league is a form of rugby that is more similar to American football than its more globally popular cousin rugby union. This similarity to the United States of America’s most popular sport, that country’s appetite for sport, and its previous acceptance of foreign sports products makes rugby league an attractive product for American media outlets to present and promote. Rugby league’s history as a working-class sport in England and Australia will appeal to American consumers hungry for grit and authenticity from their favorite athletes and teams.

Waterloo Rugby Union Football Club A view of the club as seen from “Boozers’ Bank” Audrey J Sinclair Cureton February 2013 Page 1 Table of Contents Page 2 Introduction Page 3 History Page 6 League and cup highs and lows Page 12 Players’ achievements Page 16 Waterloo and the community Page 22 Testing times at Blundellsands Page 31 Current state of play Page 2 Introduction Waterloo Rugby Union Football Club (R.U.F.C), affectionately known as “Loo” by the supporters, is steeped in history and tradition and “Boozers’ Bank” is part of that tradition. As the name may suggests, Boozers’ Bank is an elevated section of the spectators’ terrace nearest to the club house and bar which facilitates “liquid top ups” during the game. During a match some suggestions may emerge from Boozers’ Bank to “help” the referee and touch judges with their decisions and knowledge of the laws of the game. However, most comments are given and taken in good spirit and, win or lose, we die-hard fans return for the next game and another eighty minutes of banter. Even at away fixtures the Boozers’ Bank is recreated on the away team terraces with Loo supporters taking up their normal viewing positions. There has also been a suggestion that Boozers’ Bank should go “on tour” to the grassy knoll on the far side of St Anthony’s Road for a picnic. It is a special concept. This pamphlet aims to trace the history, development and memorable moments of Waterloo R.U.F.C. from its foundation to the adoption of its new name in 2012, Firwood Waterloo.

This report provides a summary of the current social, economic, health and wellbeing trends across the district of Wakefield. With other local information, the report is designed to support and inform the Wakefield Together Partnership in local decision-making and setting of priorities. Included within the report are important facts and figures about the conditions and circumstances affecting people’s lives in the District in 2012. This includes information on how the demographics of Wakefield are changing and the extent to which people are remaining healthy, safe, financially secure and satisfied with their local environment. It also includes information about the inequalities that exist within the district and conditions within the twelve Priority neighbourhoods, where intelligence has shown that specific support is required in order to address poor outcomes and improve access to services in a targeted way. Nationally, the financial crisis, recession and subsequent faltering recovery have had a significant impact on the financial position of households. Recent Government announcements and advice from the LGA suggests the current economic conditions will continue until at least 2017, and possibly beyond, with all public sector services being subject to significantly reduced resources.

TOUCHLINE The Official Newspaper of The RFU September 2014 Issue 171 ENGLAND STARS AT DOWNING STREET GARETH MILLS AND STEFAN CURTIS The England Women’s rugby team visited Downing Street following their victory at the Women’s Rugby World Cup last month (August) in France. The squad, RFU Chairman Bill Beaumont and CEO Ian Ritchie and management staff from the women’s game were welcomed and congratulated by Prime Minister David Cameron and given a tour of his official residence and office. It was a unique opportunity to reflect on a memorable tournament for the team who lifted the trophy for the first time in 20 years after reaching the three previous finals. RFU Chief Executive Ian Ritchie said: “This is a great moment for women’s rugby in England and the attention and accolades they are receiving are well deserved. It’s been a whirlwind for all those involved in winning the Women’s World Cup and meeting the Prime Minister will definitely be one of their highlights. We hope their achievements will help to continue to grow the women’s game and the fact we now have a group of professional players working towards the 2016 Olympic Games shows the progress that is being made.” Continued on page 2… CANTERBURY PUTS THE ROSE AT HEART OF NEW ENGLAND KIT VERITY WILLIAMS Canterbury and England Rugby have unveiled the new England kit which will be worn for the first time on Saturday November 8 at Twickenham, when the team take on New Zealand in the 2014 QBE Internationals.
