England Stars at Downing Street TOUCHLINE The Official Newspaper of The RFU September 2014 Issue 171 ENGLAND STARS AT DOWNING STREET GARETH MILLS AND STEFAN CURTIS The England Women’s rugby team visited Downing Street following their victory at the Women’s Rugby World Cup last month (August) in France. The squad, RFU Chairman Bill Beaumont and CEO Ian Ritchie and management staff from the women’s game were welcomed and congratulated by Prime Minister David Cameron and given a tour of his official residence and office. It was a unique opportunity to reflect on a memorable tournament for the team who lifted the trophy for the first time in 20 years after reaching the three previous finals. RFU Chief Executive Ian Ritchie said: “This is a great moment for women’s rugby in England and the attention and accolades they are receiving are well deserved. It’s been a whirlwind for all those involved in winning the Women’s World Cup and meeting the Prime Minister will definitely be one of their highlights. We hope their achievements will help to continue to grow the women’s game and the fact we now have a group of professional players working towards the 2016 Olympic Games shows the progress that is being made.” Continued on page 2… CANTERBURY PUTS THE ROSE AT HEART OF NEW ENGLAND KIT VERITY WILLIAMS Canterbury and England Rugby have unveiled the new England kit which will be worn for the first time on Saturday November 8 at Twickenham, when the team take on New Zealand in the 2014 QBE Internationals. The most striking development is the iconic symbol of England Rugby, the rose, has been placed in the centre of the chest for the first time ever. The brand new alternate kit (right) is also unveiled, with a return to a traditional crimson red colour which draws on the heritage of the England Rugby rose and the St George’s Cross. The squad of 20 players will compete on the IRB Sevens World Series circuit and seek qualification for Great Britain ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Many of the World Cup winning team also attended the Houses of Parliament the previous week where the RFU launched its strategy to capitalise on the growing popularity of the women’s game, with plans to introduce rugby to 100,000 women and girls across the country. The Red Roses secured a clean sweep of wins at the International Women’s Rugby Series in New Zealand, beating Australia, Canada and the hosts in the final game. The tour has been excellent preparation for the team as they look ahead to the Women's Rugby World Cup in Ireland in August The Men’s senior team, missing 30 players either on the British and Irish Lions tour or through injury, sealed an impressive 2-0 series victory in Argentina. It also provided Eddie Jones the opportunity, with one eye on 2019, to cap 11 new players in the process.

    Truro School & the Rugby World Cup John Kendall Carpenter (1925 – 1990) In February 1991 the Former Pupils Newsletter recorded that John Kendall Carpenter had died suddenly at his home in May at the age of 64. John was a leading figure in the world of Rugby Union. He made 28 appearances for the County, a number of them as Captain, three Oxford Blues, captained England for whom he played 23 times. He was Chairman of the steering committee which organised the game’s first World Cup in 1987 and was in charge of organising the World Cup competition to be played in Britain and France this year. In 1981 he was made a Bard of the Cornish Gorsedd and his services to rugby were officially recognised in 1989 when he was appointed a CBE. A memorial service was held in Truro Cathedral in which Harvey Richards (TS1937-42) gave the address. ‘One of the truly ‘great’ names in world John Kendall Carpenter rugby. ‘Carps’ won 23 England caps (TS 1939-1943) and Ken James (TS English & RE (1949-1954), and was also a legendary teacher & rugby master, Oxford University Blue and Barbarian. 1942-1971) at one of the 1980 school centenary He served as President of the England celebrations RFU (1980-1981), the England Schools Rugby Football Union (1985-1990), and Cornwall RFU (1984-1987).
