What an exciting time it is to be involved in the Sydney Australian Football League (SAFL) whether you are a player, club official, volunteer, supporter or Sponsor.

Whilst it was disappointing to lose our Semi-final this year it is worth noting that the club made the finals for a record 4th consecutive year and I know Doug Scholz and the players are keen to re-claim our position at the top of the competition in season 200 I. With the appointment of Assistant Coaches, a support team and the recruitment of players well under way, things are shaping up well.

The on-field highlight of this year was clearly having the opportunity to play at the against the Reserves. Who can forget that titanic struggle in the dying moments of the game? The pleasing aspect of the game off the field was the ability to raise our profile and offer better exposure and value to our Sponsors and of course provide excitement for our supporters.

The Reserves and Under IS's struggled throughout the year but there were enough positives in the season to give them hope of improving next year. Whilst we are always striving to win there is much more to a football club and your efforts in competing every week are applauded.

To the coaches Doug, Andrew, Paul and the players, thanks for your efforts and we look forward to seeing you revitalised in 200 I after a big pre-season. A Premiership in all three grades has never been achieved in the same year and, whilst it's a big ask, it is certainly possible.

The professionalism of the club has lifted over the past few years and we have a sound administrative base to work from in future. Whilst there is still much work to be done, some of the more noteworthy initiatives and achievements around the club were; • Completion of the new facilities at Drummoyne Oval in conjunction with the NSW AFL and the Drummoyne Council. • Setting up a relationship with the Melbourne based Richmond AFL club. • The installation of a computer based accounting package, Quicken, which has helped us manage our finances. • Our improved offer to sponsors including SCG games. • The new Tigerland newsletter that has helped keep supporters up to date with club news.

The revamped Drummoyne Sports Club has been operating for a few years now and it is pleasing to see it being utilised more by the local community. It not only provides financial support to the football team but also is the public face that helps to attract players and sponsors. It's great to have a place we can call our football home and we are the envy of other Sydney AFL clubs in this regard. With the gymnasium and personal fitness business moving in downstairs it will continue to move ahead.

The NSW/ACT AFL Commission is working to lift the profile of the game in Sydney and is having outstanding success at the junior level in addition to the many initiatives in our competition. The Working Party's paper "Directions for the Sydney AFL" has been !'

released and it documents future criteria required to compete in the Sydney AFL competition. With their support we will need to further lift the professionalism of the club in the next few years.

Our major challenges and future initiatives are clearly in the areas of: • Juniors - we need to nurture and help develop both our Under 18 team as well as the junior clubs in our zone which stretches from the city, along the River and right out to Parramatta. • Raising additional income primarily through Sponsorship - with an unprecedented and staggering number of children playing for junior AFL teams, the future of the game in Sydney is very exciting. Together with the rapidly increasing profile of both our SAFL competition and the Balmain Club we can offer Sponsors great value over the next few years. • Our relationship with Richmond - after laying the groundwork during 2000 we are set to take the relationship one step further in 200 I .

Major events to look forward to next year are: • Hosting the Sydney Swans Reserves at Drummoyne Oval - a great opportunity to lift the profile of the club in our community. · • The launch of the new grandstand. • Another game at the SCG and possibly Stadium Australia in 2002. • Winning flags in all three grades!!

On behalf of the club I thank all of our sponsors and in particular our Gold Sponsors Glad Cleaning and Slomart Building Services. Without their support the club would not be competitive and we look forward to helping lift the profiles of their businesses in the next few years.

To all that have supported and assisted throughout the year, thanks for your efforts. With a relatively new committee it was a struggle early on but with a year under our belts, and some fresh energetic faces joining us, the future is bright.

The volunteers at a club are vital to its success. I hope you have all enjoyed being involved in our great Australian game as much as I have and I look forward to working with you all again.

Formed in 1903, steeped in history and full of character and good people, Balmain is a great club and will continue to be a force in SAFL football.

Stuart Hoopmann Club President General Manager's Report 2000

This year has seen the following achievements:

- A Club record fourth consecutive finals' appearance for the Senior side - The Senior side play at the Sydney Cricket Ground and be one of only two sides to defeat the Sydney Swans Reserves - An affiliation established with the Richmond Pootball Club based on an expansion of the 'Tigers' brand name, sponsorship opportunities, increasing the junior, senior and coaching strength of the Club and increasing the professionalism of the Club and - The completion of the new stand at Drummoyne Oval.

These are the obvious ones. It would be remiss to not mention the outstanding achievements of Mark Mackenzie, the U/18s win over eventual premiers East Sydney in Round 18 and the high that our Reserve Grade finished on with wins in the last two rounds. Congratulations to the U/18s on the· competitive spirit that they continue to show. To those Reserve Grade players who came out of retirement to assist the Reserves, thank-you. To those who persisted for the whole season, you should be applauded. Through loss emerges victory as the Senior side of the 90s can attest to.

A special thank-you to Andrew Kyprianou and Paul Feain for their efforts. When the Club was in greatest need, both men were prepared to volunteer.

To the Senior coaches, Doug and Scott, congratulations on your achievement in making the finals. We look forward to building on this next year.

A lot of changes have occurred within the competition and the Club in the last 12 months. One thing is certain: the demands on the Club ·will increase as the APL (NSW I AC1) seek avenues to achieve their goals in Sydn.ey and NSW.

This change should be embraced and I am excited at the opportunities that the Club is now presented with: .

The relationship with Richmond will add a dimension to the Club that no one could have predicted The Concord Bombers will be a new Junior Club starting in 2001 for us to take under ourwmg. The availability of the gym at the Club should see a significant lift in our physical appearance and so the list is endless.

Congratulations to Drummoyne Power, Glebe, North Ryde and Riverview on yet another successful season. Your continued success and our relationship with you is crucial to our future.

Fin~ly to our committee, volunteers, sponsors and supporters. Thank-you for your support and dedication this year especially to those new people who have joined the Balmain Pamily. This is a wonderful Club with much to offer anyone willing to make an investment. The more assistance we have, the more that we can achieve and give back.

Andrew Hamilton General Manager OBITUARY

Justin Groves

The football communities from Balmain, Sydney and the Mornington Peninsula were all shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Justin Groves on November 7, 1999. Justin played football for Karingal in the Mornington Peninsula League, which included a two year stint with the St. Kilda Under 19s. At the beginning of 1997 Justin, who worked for SALMAT, was transferred on business from Melbourne to Sydney. He moved into a unit at Drummoyne and came to play with Balmain. It was not long before he had a profound influence on the club. This influence extended from the field of play to recruiting to administration. He announced on his arrival at the club that he was a star goalkicking forward. It didn't take long for the coach, Steve Bird, to work out that he was not a forward. In his two year playing career at the club, he proved to be a star full back! Justin bought to the club a firm handshake, a smile and boundless enthusisam. He soon had everyone in the team shaking hands, smiling and feeling part of something special. He liked to write messages to ·people, especially to the coach. He used to take Steve Bird's notebook when it was left unattended and write messages eg Move Moote to full forward. He did the same with the coach's board and would create his own team and try and make the match committee smile at half time. Justin was promoted rapidly at work and used his influence to recruit players for Balmain. He bought to the club such good players as Adam Denison, Andrew Hassett, Ashley Reade, Ben Jones and Jonathan Rowe. He organized a major sponsorship for the football club from his employer, SALMAT and in the executive positions he occupied he was always able to ensure the Salmat boys had time off for training and treatment of injuries. In the latter part of season 1998, Justin was advised that he had a potentially serious heart problem and that he should retire from football. He held off retirement until after the premiership had been won. For season 1999 Justin was a committee member, football manager and first grade runner. He performed all these duties with his usual enthusiasm. Balmain, in 96 years, had never won a premiership in the first division of Sydney football until Justin arrived. It is no coincidence that in his three years the club played in three grand finals for 2 premierships. One month before his death, Justin announced his engagement to Amanda Higgins. His funeral in Melbourne was attended by 1200 people including 30 of his friends from the Balmain Football Club. REPORT OF THE FIRST GRADE COACH 2000

After a season in which we showed glimpses of our potential with some fantastic passages of football, the loss to St.George in the first semi-final ended our year early. While competitive in all games, we lacked the consistency that ultimately wins premierships. Despite the end result, there were some positives. There were a number of games where we came from behind to win, showing tremendous amounts of courage, commitment and self belief. The loss to the Swans Reserves at the SCG was a courageous effort, but the lesson to come out of this was that mistakes at the top level will cost you dearly. The return match was a good win, but we had the advantage of the extra player against an injury depleted side. Individually, there were some great efforts. The first of these was the form of Mark Mackenzie. Mark was selected in the Sydney side where his form earned him selection in the state sick From there Mark was honoured with selection in the All-Australian side. Mark also won the Balmain Best & Fairest and followed this up with a win in the Phelan Medal for the Best & Fairest in the SFL. Congratulations on an outstanding season. Lee Campbell also had a very good season and became the focal point of our attack, kicking 46 of his 60 goals in the last 9 games of the home and away season. This placed him second in the league. Lee was runner up to Mark in the club Best & Fairest and finished third in the Phelan Medal only 2 votes behind Mark. Michael Carey assumed the captaincy after David Bugg's knee injury. As captain he led by example and was willing to sacri:(ice his own game on a number of occasions for the sake of the team. Michael gained representat.ive honours with the Sydney side. His positive attitude and thoughtful insights over the course of the season were appreciated. Despite playing in unfamiliar territory in the mid field, Ash Reade had a good season as did Geoff Bouchier, Roger Moten, Josh Bartlett and Ryan Meldrum. Injuries and lack of depth compounded our problems in the second half of the season and this particularly true with our "Under 23" players. Despite this Ben Howell, Pat Schell, John Feain, Aaron Jackson, Glen Fowler, Tim Howell and James Kirby will benefit from the experiences of this year. A tremendous amount of work is carried out behind the scenes in any football season and there are a number of people to thank Scott Kirkwood as Assistant Coach was a real driving force behind the team this year. Whether it be during the game, conducting training drills or on the end of countless phone calls, Scott gave his all and has received little acknowledgment for his efforts. Thanks for your contribution, Frog. · Andrew Kyprianou also deserves special thanks for his selfless effort in coaching the Reserves under trying circumstances. People like Andrew with their total involvement are the lifeblood of the club. As football manager and team manager, Paul Feain's time, energy and attention to detail were greatly appreciated. Thanks to David Bugg, Bruce Arndell, Duncan McRae, James Sutherland, Anna Dingwall, Jason Bendall, Annette and Adrian Ferris, Atjnanda Davis, John Meldrum, Bob Altorjay, Bob Kirby, Andrew Hamilton, Peter Madkenzie and Stuart Hoopman for their week in, week out efforts during the year.

REPORT OF THE RESERVE GRADE COACH

' I ! With 60 odd players filtering through the pipeline and only a handful up to a standard I class as reasonable, I was left hanging with a bunch of inept players.

Don't forget people I am a 30 year old mah, with a morality devoid 80 year old girth. You have to respect that!

On a more serious note running second last would be viewed as poor, but as I reviewed each player in my post season analysis I came to the conclusion that running second last could be classified as an achievement? I ' Through the mid season draft, recruitment manager Damon Venning and myself were able to secure the services of Nick Archer, _ Phillip Reece, Fred Hummel, Anton Ritchie. and Dave Johnson at Selections 7, 23, 87, 99 and 1042 respectively. The achievement of 3 and 13 or running second last would not have been accomplished without the return of these true Bal main warriors.

As I move forward in 2001, I add another notch in my illustrious career belt. Coach Sheeds has finally sequred my services for a reasonable fee I might add, that reminds me t'1e day I signed sharing a devon sandwich with the doyen of coaching ahd who should stroll past but Freddy Hummell holding his liquid ribs that appeared to me to be held in a precarious position ...... Exactly!

To my successor next year, ·at the end d,f the day everyone says fantastic players don't make great coaches they could be right. However, as you all know whether I am struggling for breath in a lovely windswept pocket, as some insipid monkey in a Balmain Jersey chasing my man or in the arms of a loved one at 11.00 am the morning 1 after at the Bearesford I'm not a quitter, I won't let my unlucky 13 h year be the last, I'll see you all again next year. I

I'll leave you with this, a true sign of a footballer is to play unfit, anyone can play the game fit. See ya at Leroys gym!

Regards, Kipper

Although we won only 4 games for the year and finished fifth in a five team competition, the year had many highlights.

James Kirby started the year with us and was then promoted to Sydney Swans Reserve Grade and then Balmain First Grade. John Feain similarly played for the Swans Reserve Grade, Balmain First Grade and then the NSW ACT Rams in the national Under 18 competition. Eden Bennell played both Reserve Grade and First Grade for the club and both Jonathan Murty and Adrian Wrice played Reserve Grade

The three (non-forfeit) victories were marvels in themselves and something savoured by the players, the coaching staff, supporters, and parents alike. Who will forget singing the song several times after our victories against Penrith and then again after the final game of the year against Easts.

Because our junior clubs had no Under 16s, Cameron Wilson, Neil Fretwell and Lee Fretwell all played the season for the l8s. Cameron performed exceptionally well. Who could forget the courage and enthusiasm of Luke Windon, the energy of Nathan Anwyl, the commitment of Tim Maloney and James Hoff and the travel undertaken by Toby Hayes to attend games?

We had Dean Clegg, Matt Kelly and Peter Caheny all playing their first season of Aussie Rules and all showing great promise. -

On a negative note, our discipline let us down badly at times and there were several reports for the season. The worst being against Neil Fretwell for a nasty incident with an umpire which means he has to sit out season 2001.

A big vote of thanks goes to Matthew Feain for his assistance in coaching at the start of the year and to Ryan Meldrum for his outstanding coaching achievements at the end of the year. Ryan bought the support of first grade super star Mark Mackenzie.

To Gary Bennell goes a huge thank you for all his hard work as team manager and to his wife Kerrie a special word of thanks for her time keeping and supporting ability. Thanks go to our accredited goal umpire and team photographer Bob Kirby, Thanks to Lisa Windon for her support of the team in running water and encouraging me. To Adrian and Annette Ferris goes grateful acknowledgement for all you have done for the Balmain Football Club and for running water and being interested in the team and also for encouraging me to keep at it when times were tough

It is time the club made a bigger commitment to Third Grade and expended more time, money and effort into getting thirds off the bottom of the ladder. Our neighbouring clubs, Easts and Wests have both shown that it can be done. Lets move on into the new century and stop making excuses about how hard it is and JUST DO IT.

-· The Balmain Australian Rules Football club has had a troubled career. Without doubt we have been one of Australia's most unsuccessful football clubs. The club was formed in 1903 and for 7 years played in the first division of Sydney football. The club made the finals for the first 4 years, with a best result of runners up in 1904. The Reserve grade team were premiers that year. By 1909 we were unable to field a full team every week and for the years 1910, 11 & 12 we were in the Reserve grade competition only and played in 3 grand finals for one premiership. In 1913, we combined with a team called Northern Districts who were based at Ryde, and once again played in the first division under the name of Central Western. In 1915 the name changed back to Balmain and for 2 years we were one of the leading clubs. In 1916 we lost one game throughout the year and then lost the grand final to Paddington, whose star player on the day of the grand final was an ex-Balmain player, Wally Messenger - the brother of Dally Messenger. (Wally also played in a Rugby League test match for Australia).

The club disbanded in 1918 due to the effects of the First World War. Many SFL players enlisted - some of course never to return. A. Steptoe was the first Balmain player killed during the war. He came to Balmain from the Maitland area and was killed in action at Lone Pine during the Gallipoli campaign. From 1919 until 1925 we again played in the SFL and fielded a Reserve Grade team as well. During these 7 years we managed to win · only 16 games - an average ofjust over 2 games a year. For 1926 the SFL restructured under a "District Scheme" and there was no place for Balmain.

The club reformed in 194 7 and again played in the SFL from 1948 until 1987. During this period we were mostly unsuccessful on the field. In this 40 year period we made the finals just twice - 1969 we were beaten by about 100 points by Newtown in the first semi-final and in 1983, under the leadership of , we lost the Grand Final. Reserve grade and third grade both got to one grand final each in this period, both lost these games by less than a goal.

At the end of the 1987 season we were thrown out of the SFL and played for the next six years in the SFA. We played in the grand final every year, winning 3. For season 1992 we were undefeated and in 1993 we lost just two games - the sec1::md semi-final and t~e Grand Final. In 1994 we were invited back into the SFL and in a disastrous season we lost every game, mostly by huge margins. 1995 saw one win and 1996 five wins. 1997 gave us our first ever Senior Premiership in the First Division. 1998 gave us our second with Reserve Grade being runners up. 1999 saw us in our our third grand final in a row and in season 2000 we again made the final series. An *0 beside the name of the team played means that the player was selected for the team but so far I have been unable to confirm if the player actually played.

Mark MacKenzie gained selection in the All Australian Country Ttfam for Season 2000 Drummoyne Power Junior AFL Club Season 2000 was the Club=s second year of operation following its establishment at the end of 1998 and the beginning of 1999. Like 1999 it has been another very productive year. We fielded Auskick, 1 Os and 12s in the new City Association, and U 13s in the Northside Association. All teams reached the preliminary finals, and the U13s went on to win the Premiership on the Northside. In the new City Association the Association awards for best and fairest in the U 12s and U 1Os both went to Drummoyne players, Robbie O'Reilly as captain of the U12s, and Seb Dixon as captain of the U1 Os, both of whom ·were best & fairest in their respective grades within Drummoyne Power itself.

Drummoyne U13s had a large contingent of 10 players in the NorthShore Reps U13 squad of 30 players. This squad was coached by Drummoyne parents, Steve Lewis, Mick Bowles and manager Phil Dixon. The Northshore squad remained undefeated, finally winning the inaugural Tony Lockett Shield. Three shields are on display at Drummoyne Sports Club: the Tony Lockett Shield, the U13s Premiership Shield, and the Best New Team on the Northside, once again awarded to the U13s. The U13s Premiers were last year's U12s Premiers in St George, so have won premierships on both sides of the harbour, pmving themselves to be the best in the Sydney region. Damien Bowles was best on ground for the U13s Grand Final and winner of the Best & Fairest for Drummoyne Power.

Seven of the U13s were umpires .for the new City·Association, so a lot of travel and juggling of match times occurred during the season. The parents are to be warmly congratulated for putting up with the very trying Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays (for the 10 rep players) when a great deal of travel over greater Sydney occurred. Thanks and congratulations go to all the children for their efforts, and to their parents. Congratulations also to the Drummoyne coaches and managers, to the Canteen staff and to the rest of the hard-working committee. In their second year Drummoyne Power continue to shine as a club doing well on and off the field.

Phil Dixon President GLEBE GREYHOUNDS YEAR 2000 REPORT

With som~ trepidation we undertook the Presidential responsibility, with no experience whatever m the role, or any idea as to what it would entait An air of despair existed at the beginning of the season, many committee members and helpers had moved to other clubs (due to the lack of a U14'S in the Inner City competition) others felt they had contributed enough and it was time there was new hands on the helm. 2000 saw a leaner executive Committee. Sue Parker - Registrar Liz Lucas - Treasurer David Britton - Vice President The Hancock's were Presidents and performed the Secretarial role. Liz Lucas, Sue Parker and John Lindsay being the only continuing Committee members. Few people for the amount of work, fortunately all Coaching positions were filled with Frank Haines stepping into the Auskick co-ordinaters role at the last moment, due to David Britton taking on one of the U1 O'S coaching positions. So a new Committee, a new Football Association - the stage was set for a different year. The Inner City Competition has completed its first season, not without it's share of critics. One of the goals of ihe Association is to develop a viable Inner City competition, by any measure this has l;€~n achieved in U1 O'S and to a lesser extent U11 's. The U12's competition was lr(;i

ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2000 • CLUB OF THE YEAR' in the inaugural year of the Inner City Association. • 13 players represented the Association against the St George Association. • Anthony Fine achieves Best and Fairest for the Association in his first playing year. • U12 Premiership. • U11 Grand Finalists • Home and away change rooms re- opened in the pavilion. • Club song re-instated. • Canteen acknowledgement as the best in the game. • Continuing sponsorship from the Toxteth Bistro. • New sponsorship from Metro D Architects. • Involvement of many new families in the match day roles. • Sound financial position. • Club tracksuits. CANTEEN-' . It would be wayward not to make special mention of our Canteen, competently run by S1an Williams with a dedicated group of assistants. This institution provides an off ~round focal point as Glebians and guests socialise around the BBQ. Our Canteen underpins the financial success of this club. SPONSORHIP . We have been very fortunate in 20C1, to have the conti~uin.~ support of .t~e Toxteth Bistro; their support extends beyond the fir :mcial to venue ava1lab1hty and pu~l1c1ty: . Our new sponsors Metro D Archite:cls have been extremely g~nerous m their first year of involvement we look forward to this continuing. I would also hke to acknowledge the very generous d~nation given anonymously by one of our families - you know who you are. AUSTRALIAN RULES S.I.C. RIVERVIEW 2000

AUSTRALIAN RULES S.l.C. RIVERVIEW 2000

The year 2000 was the fourth season since Australian Rules was reintroduced as a school sport and the efforts in those years were realised not only by the fielding of 3 teams (U13's, U14's -& U15/16's) but in terms of much greater success on the field with the 2 teams playing in the finals. As Riverview is currently the only independent school offering AFL to its students on field success is important to the development of the code within the school and in attracting the interest of other schools to AFL.

U13's The year 2000 was the first year the college has fielded a team in this age group. The team was a mix of some experience but the majority of boys were playing Aussie Rules for the first time. What the team lacked in experience, skill and size ( about half the team were eligble for .. U12's)was more than compensated for in enthusiasm and great teamplay. Ably coached by Tim Ley this team against bigger and more experienced Northside teams scraped into the final six with 9 wins and 6 losses and won a memorable first final before going down to eventual premiers Drummoyne in their second final. A great season for the U13's.

U14's This team played with mixed success largely due to an 6ngoing struggle to fill a side each Saturday. In all a total. of 45 players many recruited at short notice from rugby or soccer played at some stage during the season giving many boys a taste of Aussie Rules. Despite struggling with numbers and skill levels the U14's still managed to win 4 games for the season and lost narrowly to many higher placed teams.

U15/16's This team was largely made up of players now into their fourth season of Aussie Rules but having won only a handful! of games in the past 3 seasons winning games was very important. Under new coach Tom Spurling the boys learnt how to win recording 11 wins during the season on the way to the Finals. In the finals Riverview overcame Westbrook in the preliminary final to meet Forest in Riverviews first grand final appearance since the eighties. Unfortuneately Forest were the better side on the day winning the first 3 quarters before Riverview showed their real character in a spirited last quarter. A great season of AFL for these boys.

In summary Australian Football developed significantly at the college in 2000 with more professional administration, improved coaching and growing parental support. On behalf of AFL at the school.I would like to thank the Balmain club for its interest and support during the season. Russell Edwards · President
