This year produced many highlights and achievements once again for the Red Lion Kangaroos. It kicked off in March with the opening of the refurbished change rooms underneath the grandstand. The rooms are truly fantastic and this combined with the Eastern Oval surface and netball court give us the best playing facilities in the league. A special mention to Michael Walsh for helping drive this project through to completion. The football side of things saw new senior coach Michael Hynes take over a side that many critics predicted would struggle. This was not to be the case as Mick with an injection of youth and new ideas saw the senior side confound the critics to just miss out on a grand final berth. It was a disappointing end to great season, well done Mick as we look forward to going a couple better in 2009. Grant Luscombe’s reserve side also bowed out in the preliminary final after looking favourites for most of the year, thanks for your efforts Grant. What an effort from the U18.5’s, a three peat!! The benefits of having East Ballarat & Golden Point feeding into the thirds will ensure the East Point Football Club is strong into the future. Can they make it four on the trot? I know Mick Spratling will be giving it his best. Congratulations Mick on a fantastic achievement. Congratulations to Dan Jordan on once again being the BFL leading goal kicker as well as gaining selection in the BFL Team of the Year along with Chris Banwell and Paul Koderenko. Also to Sam Kitchin on being selected as the BFL Rookie of the year and to Tyler Dittloff for winning the BFL U18.5 Best & Fairest award. Congratulations to all netball sides for once again making the finals, unfortunately the senior & reserves bowed out early but the U18.5 girls won their way to the Grand Final to finish runners up, congratulations again on an excellent season. Thank you to Matthew Blomeley for his efforts in coaching both the senior & reserves netball sides and well done to Ren Seymour & Katie Williams for their joint roles as coaches of the U18.5 netball. Congratulations to Emma Church for winning the BFL Reserves Netball Best & Fairest and also well done to Jaime Wallace for being selected in the BFL Netball Team of the Year. Finally I would like to thank everyone for their support during my first year as president, unfortunately due to work commitments I am unable to continue in the role for 2009 but will remain active around the club in whatever role that time permits. I look forward to working with the new president and giving my utmost support to this great club. Gerard Delaney President EPFNC Secretary’s Report Members; I present to you my report for season 2008, For the 2nd successive season it is pleasing to report to the members that we had all Six of our grades make the finals in the Regional One Ballarat Football League senior competition, this was a great result for the many people who have put the work in to see the club be in the position that it enjoys today as one of the leagues genuine powerhouse clubs. For the 2nd time in 4 years we finished runners up in the Merv & Mary Howard Club Championship Award after capturing back to back awards in season 2006 & 2007, this gives an indication of just how strong the club has become as this is measured across winning performances in all 6 grades. After advertising and going through an extensive and exhaustive interview process in early November 2007 the club announced and appointed the well credentialed and experienced Mick Hynes as its senior coach for the next 2 seasons and with that we saw a renewed excitement and vigour around the place and with Micks coaching philosophy of continuing to develop the senior players we had at the club we saw many of those players who played in the 2007 reserves premierships be given the opportunity to develop further in the senior side, players such as Jed Murphy, Joel Dodd, Josh Discher, Toby Boyle & Brent Fitzpatrick as well as opportunities to the younger players coming through in Sam Kitchin, Adam Gilbert, Toby Biggs, Sam Van Meel, Jayden Alexander, Daniel Tung, Adam McKenzie and Darian Quinlan. At the commencement of the season many people had doubts on the Red Lion Kangaroos being a genuine title contender for season 2008 with the loss of key players to the playing group in both the football and netball grades, but pleasingly we were again successful in all 6 sides making the finals and all in with a realistic shot at the premierships on offer, full credit to the coaches in Mick Hynes, Grant Luscombe, Mick Spratling, Matt Blomeley, Ren Seymour & Katie Williams on the results achieved, also to the players, trainers and support coaching staff who contributed the work on and off the field to reach that position once again. I am pleased to report that we had 2 sides make it through to the final day on the leagues calendar to contest grand finals, both of our Under 18.5 grades, the footballers under the coaching of Michael Spratling were looking to capture their 3rd straight premiership title and the netballers under coaches Katie and Ren were playing in their 2nd successive grand final but looking to capture our first ever title in that grade. The history books will show that the footballers were successful in winning their 3rd premiership title in a row, it was a fantastic game of footy that went right down to the wire and to “Super Coach” Mick Spratling well done on a great result and to all of your players, parents and helpers who assisted you during the year it was just rewards for your efforts, unfortunately for the netballers it was not the result we wanted but full credit to the way you played the game out and it just wasn’t our day, to Ren and Katie I’m sure you will be back to get that title that you richly deserve. The majority of our playing list have either played their Junior football at East or Point and this is a fact to be very proud of, our club should remain focused on continuing to build on this we must ensure that all of these players coming through the ranks become long serving players of the club. It is vitally important that we continue to work with both our junior clubs to foster the solid relationship we have and continue to develop the pathway for these boys and their parents to be part of the senior section as they progress from the junior ranks, it is a task that is always going to be a work in progress and with the results so far proving to be very encouraging we must continue to grow together as the one club. After many years of work behind the scenes it is pleasing to see that money has been allocated in the City of Ballarats Budget for 2008/2009 for the construction and erection of a lighting upgrade to take place at the Eastern Oval, as well as funding obtained through the VCFL area manager Brett Anderson for Netting to be installed behind the goals at both ends, these are due to take place during 2009. We are still awaiting the commencement of the partnership that will see the Ballarat Cricket Association extend the East Point Football Netball Social Rooms to include a sports administration centre, these I am assured will commence early in the New Year. The improvement of these facilities will assist in achieving our vision of providing members with quality facilities for years to come. SEASON HIGHLIGHTS Opening of the $400,000 Refurbished Eastern Oval Change rooms. The club making the finals in all 6 grades for 2nd successive season. Grand final appearances in 2 grades that resulted in 1 Premiership & 3rd in a row for U/18.5 Footballers. Emma Church Reserve Netball & Tyler Dittloff U/18.5 football, winning League Best & Fairest awards. Dan Jordan winning his 3rd successive Tony Lockett Medal. Sam Kitchin named the 2008 BFL Rookie player of the Year.

HIS3MHI – Making History Research Project – Victoria Park David De Angelis – 17990254 What is the historical legacy the Collingwood Football Club has at Victoria Park, Melbourne? The eerie sound of the 2:30pm train arriving at Victoria Park train station echoes and sends vibrations up through the grandstand as I sit on an old wooden seat inside an empty Sherrin stand. Whilst I sit on my wooden seat overlooking the skeleton that was once the R.T Rush stand, I am in amazement, shock and awe of how this current incarnation of Victoria Park is a far-cry from the bustling coliseum of black and white it used to be when I was a child. The eerie sound of that 2:30pm train arriving at Victoria Park station nearly twenty years ago, would have been drowned out with the sounds of rusty turnstiles rotating as droves of supporters make their way through the gates, the sound of magazine vendors’ yelling “RECORDS! GET YOUR FOOTY RECORDS!” as well as the hysteria that is associated with pre-game excitement. In this illustrated essay, I will address the historical legacy the Collingwood Football Club has shared over one hundred years at their undisputed home, Victoria Park. From the club’s humble beginnings of being a football club that represented the working-class people of Collingwood, its invincibility throughout the depression era, the various developments that occurred at the ground to the fateful day Collingwood played its last AFL match at in 1999. Within the four walls of the Collingwood Town Hall, the Collingwood Football Club was formed on Friday February the 12th, 18921.

Coleman Medal Student Activity 7 8 9 10 11 12 TI-Nspire™ Investigation Student 30 min Full Stop for Full Forwards The Coleman medal, named after John Coleman (Essendon 1949 to 1954) is awarded to the AFL player that kicks the most goals in a season. Coleman kicked 12 goals in his debut match and still mixes it with the best when it comes to the average number of goals kicked per game. Peter Hudson was the first Coleman medal recipient to kick more than 100 goals in a season (1968, 125 goals), he backed this up with 146 goals in 1970, 140 in 1971 and 105 in 1977. Since this amazing era, players such as Jason Dunstall, Tony Lockett and Gary Ablett (Snr) have collected multiple Coleman medals consisting of more than 100 goals in a season. More recently, recipients of the medal have kicked between 60 and 80 goals per season. Does this recent trend represent a ‘full stop’ for full forwards? Your task is to see if data supports the notion that the position of full forward is no longer as critical as it was in the 1970’s through to the 1990’s. Platforms have altered how people search, find, and share information, and how social interactions take place online. This new era of user practices, micro-communication cultures, and an increasing algorithmic shaping of sociability, opens up new research endeavours to understand communication as a cultural practice. While platforms are reluctant to acknowledge that they work as media companies, and present themselves as being ‘neutral’, they intervene in public discourse through their design, policies, and corporate decisions. This intervention is increasingly under public scrutiny at a time when racist and sexist speech is thriving online. The entanglement between user practices and platforms in the reinforcement of racism is the focus of my research. Specifically, I argue that this entanglement
