Balmain Australian Football Club Presidents Report, 2000 What an exciting time it is to be involved in the Sydney Australian Football League (SAFL) whether you are a player, club official, volunteer, supporter or Sponsor. Whilst it was disappointing to lose our Semi-final this year it is worth noting that the club made the finals for a record 4th consecutive year and I know Doug Scholz and the players are keen to re-claim our position at the top of the competition in season 200 I. With the appointment of Assistant Coaches, a support team and the recruitment of players well under way, things are shaping up well. The on-field highlight of this year was clearly having the opportunity to play at the Sydney Cricket Ground against the Sydney Swans Reserves. Who can forget that titanic struggle in the dying moments of the game? The pleasing aspect of the game off the field was the ability to raise our profile and offer better exposure and value to our Sponsors and of course provide excitement for our supporters. The Reserves and Under IS's struggled throughout the year but there were enough positives in the season to give them hope of improving next year. Whilst we are always striving to win there is much more to a football club and your efforts in competing every week are applauded. To the coaches Doug, Andrew, Paul and the players, thanks for your efforts and we look forward to seeing you revitalised in 200 I after a big pre-season. A Premiership in all three grades has never been achieved in the same year and, whilst it's a big ask, it is certainly possible. The professionalism of the club has lifted over the past few years and we have a sound administrative base to work from in future. Whilst there is still much work to be done, some of the more noteworthy initiatives and achievements around the club were; • Completion of the new facilities at Drummoyne Oval in conjunction with the NSW AFL and the Drummoyne Council. • Setting up a relationship with the Melbourne based Richmond AFL club. • The installation of a computer based accounting package, Quicken, which has helped us manage our finances. • Our improved offer to sponsors including SCG games. • The new Tigerland newsletter that has helped keep supporters up to date with club news. The revamped Drummoyne Sports Club has been operating for a few years now and it is pleasing to see it being utilised more by the local community. It not only provides financial support to the football team but also is the public face that helps to attract players and sponsors. It's great to have a place we can call our football home and we are the envy of other Sydney AFL clubs in this regard. With the gymnasium and personal fitness business moving in downstairs it will continue to move ahead. The NSW/ACT AFL Commission is working to lift the profile of the game in Sydney and is having outstanding success at the junior level in addition to the many initiatives in our competition. The Working Party's paper "Directions for the Sydney AFL" has been !' released and it documents future criteria required to compete in the Sydney AFL competition. With their support we will need to further lift the professionalism of the club in the next few years. Our major challenges and future initiatives are clearly in the areas of: • Juniors - we need to nurture and help develop both our Under 18 team as well as the junior clubs in our zone which stretches from the city, along the River and right out to Parramatta. • Raising additional income primarily through Sponsorship - with an unprecedented and staggering number of children playing for junior AFL teams, the future of the game in Sydney is very exciting. Together with the rapidly increasing profile of both our SAFL competition and the Balmain Club we can offer Sponsors great value over the next few years. • Our relationship with Richmond - after laying the groundwork during 2000 we are set to take the relationship one step further in 200 I . Major events to look forward to next year are: • Hosting the Sydney Swans Reserves at Drummoyne Oval - a great opportunity to lift the profile of the club in our community. · • The launch of the new grandstand. • Another game at the SCG and possibly Stadium Australia in 2002. • Winning flags in all three grades!! Without their support the club would not be competitive and we look forward to helping lift the profiles of their businesses in the next few years. To all that have supported and assisted throughout the year, thanks for your efforts. With a relatively new committee it was a struggle early on but with a year under our belts, and some fresh energetic faces joining us, the future is bright. The volunteers at a club are vital to its success. I hope you have all enjoyed being involved in our great Australian game as much as I have and I look forward to working with you all again. Formed in 1903, steeped in history and full of character and good people, Balmain is a great club and will continue to be a force in SAFL football. Stuart Hoopmann Club President General Manager's Report 2000 This year has seen the following achievements: - A Club record fourth consecutive finals' appearance for the Senior side - The Senior side play at the Sydney Cricket Ground and be one of only two sides to defeat the Sydney Swans Reserves - An affiliation established with the Richmond Pootball Club based on an expansion of the 'Tigers' brand name, sponsorship opportunities, increasing the junior, senior and coaching strength of the Club and increasing the professionalism of the Club and - The completion of the new stand at Drummoyne Oval. These are the obvious ones. It would be remiss to not mention the outstanding achievements of Mark Mackenzie, the U/18s win over eventual premiers East Sydney in Round 18 and the high that our Reserve Grade finished on with wins in the last two rounds. Congratulations to the U/18s on the· competitive spirit that they continue to show. To those Reserve Grade players who came out of retirement to assist the Reserves, thank-you. To those who persisted for the whole season, you should be applauded. Through loss emerges victory as the Senior side of the 90s can attest to. A special thank-you to Andrew Kyprianou and Paul Feain for their efforts. When the Club was in greatest need, both men were prepared to volunteer. To the Senior coaches, Doug and Scott, congratulations on your achievement in making the finals. We look forward to building on this next year. A lot of changes have occurred within the competition and the Club in the last 12 months. One thing is certain: the demands on the Club ·will increase as the APL (NSW I AC1) seek avenues to achieve their goals in Sydn.ey and NSW. This change should be embraced and I am excited at the opportunities that the Club is now presented with: . The relationship with Richmond will add a dimension to the Club that no one could have predicted The Concord Bombers will be a new Junior Club starting in 2001 for us to take under ourwmg.
