Oromia is the largest National Regional State of Ethiopia. Here we present the first comprehensive checklist of its birds. A total of 804 bird species has been recorded, 601 of them confirmed (443) or assumed (158) to be breeding birds. At least 561 are all-year residents (and 31 more potentially so), at least 73 are Afrotropical migrants and visitors (and 44 more potentially so), and 184 are Palaearctic migrants and visitors (and eight more potentially so). Three species are endemic to Oromia, 18 to Ethiopia and 43 to the Horn of Africa. 170 Oromia bird species are biome restricted: 57 to the Afrotropical Highlands biome, 95 to the Somali-Masai biome, and 18 to the Sudan-Guinea Savanna biome. -

The main target for most people on the tour www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] p.1 Tropical Birding - Trip Report The Gambia: A Taste of Africa, November 2017 Red-throated Bee-eaters We arrived in the capital of The Gambia, Banjul, early evening just as the light was fading. Our flight in from the UK was delayed so no time for any real birding on this first day of our “Chilled Birding Tour”. Our local guide Tijan and our ground crew met us at the airport. We piled into Tijan’s well used minibus as Little Swifts and Yellow-billed Kites flew above us. A short drive took us to our lovely small boutique hotel complete with pool and lovely private gardens, we were going to enjoy staying here. Having settled in we all met up for a pre-dinner drink in the warmth of an African evening. The food was delicious, and we chatted excitedly about the birds that lay ahead on this nine- day trip to The Gambia, the first time in West Africa for all our guests. At first light we were exploring the gardens of the hotel and enjoying the warmth after leaving the chilly UK behind. Both Red-eyed and Laughing Doves were easy to see and a flash of colour announced the arrival of our first Beautiful Sunbird, this tiny gem certainly lived up to its name! A bird flew in landing in a fig tree and again our jaws dropped, a Yellow-crowned Gonolek what a beauty! Shocking red below, black above with a daffodil yellow crown, we were loving Gambian birds already. -

Tropical Birding Trip Report KENYA NOVEMBER 2019 Kenya: The Coolest Trip in Africa 10th – 26th November, 2019 TOUR LEADER: Charley Hesse. Report & photos by Charley Hesse. All photos were taken on this tour. Kenya offers a wide variety of landscapes and habitats with a corresponding long list of bird and mammal species. We started this tour in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, and the Nairobi National Park where we saw dancing Grey Crowned Cranes and an amazing 9 species of cisticola in a day, with the bizarre backdrop of the city’s skyline. We dipped down the Magadi road into very dry scrub with a totally different set of species like Fischer’s Sparrow-Larks & Cut- throats. From Nairobi we drove to the foothills of Mt Kenya and in the lush montane forest saw the huge Crowned Eagle and verdant Hartlaub’s Turaco. Next, we visited the Aberdares NP and explored the alpine moorland where we saw the huge Jackson’s Francolin and endemic Aberdare Cisticola. At the bizarre Ark Lodge, we saw Giant Forest Hog, plus genets and galago at night. We dropped down from the highlands into the great rift valley and explored Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha with their myriad of water birds. The boat ride at Lake Naivasha was particularly good for photography. On to Lake Baringo with its amazing local guides who have many great birds staked out including owls, nightjars and coursers. Another boat ride produced White-backed Night-Heron and Northern Carmine Bee-eater. At Kakamega we explored the lush forest and found specialties like turacos, robin- chats, batises and the African Broadbill. -
Best of Ghana
The White-necked Rockfowl is somewhat misnamed as it has both a yellow neck and head but the name is presumably inspired by the dried and colourless corpses to be found in museum collections. Once again we enjoyed a marvellous and unforgettable encounter with this wonderful bird. (Nik Borrow) BEST OF GHANA 7 – 21 MARCH 2018 LEADERS: NIK BORROW and PAUL MENSAH Ghana, once known as the ‘Gold Coast’ is situated in the very heart of West Africa and the country’s growing tourist industry has much to offer visitors through the country’s colourful and vibrant culture, turbulent history and a coast lined with beautiful beaches and numerous slave forts that are still left standing to remind visitors of a grim past. However, the aim of our ‘Best of’ tour was to discover the cream of Ghana’s avian riches and our focus was on an exciting selection of Upper Guinea Forest endemic birds and one very special species in particular; the strange and bizarre White-necked Rockfowl (aka Yellow-headed Picathartes). Our success with this charismatic species was total and absolute with close views of at least four individuals at close range and this event was voted the highlight of the trip! Our tour started at Shai Hills where, birding in the 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Best of Ghana 2018 www.birdquest-tours.com thickets that surround the base of the rocky outcrops that are frequented by White-crowned Cliff Chats and colourful Double-toothed and Bearded Barbets, we managed to hear the scarce local form of African Barred Owlet sometimes split as Etchécopar’s Owlet. -

Box 82, Juba, South Sudan ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Article history The study was carried out to determine patterns of birds’ species richness Received: 8 October 2019 and abundance in Badingilo national park us-ing a 10 m fixed-radius point count method. Tropical Birding Trip Report Kenya: The Coolest Trip in Africa, May 2016 Kenya: The Coolest Trip in Africa 12-28 May 2016 TOUR LEADER: Adam Scott Kennedy Report and photos by Adam Scott Kennedy Gray Crowned Crane in Nairobi National Park Kenya is a mind-blowing birding destination at any time of year but it would seem that our May departure was especially well-timed. Not only did we enjoy the best weather imaginable but we arrived in time to see a majority of resident birds in full breeding plumage, intra-African migrants just arriving and we even caught the tail-end of the Palearctic migration. This classic set departure tour covered a vast array of habitats to be found within Kenya, from the verdant Guinea-Congolese rainforest at Kakamega and the Afro-montane forests of Mount Kenya, the very full Rift Valley lakes and papyrus swamps of Lake Victoria, to the endless plains of the Masai Mara. In total, we recorded 413 bird species of which 398 were seen and 15 were ‘heard only’. After a much needed drink, we turned in for the night and began to dream of what was to come… 13th May The group rendezvoused in the small garden of the Boma Inn for a first taste of African bird life.
