Ever since, Muslims of various sectarian persuasions have produced conflicting versions of the events which took place in the wake of Muhammad’s death and the behaviour of certain prominent personalities. This dissertation examines the role played by the surviving daughter of the Prophet, Fatima, during this early, tumultuous period. The objective is not to present a ‘historical’ reconstruction of events, but rather to explore how the formative Islamic histories (2nd- 4th/8th-10th centuries) and Shiite hadith (2nd-6th/8th-12th centuries) creatively shaped the image of Fatima in her conflict with the first caliph and successor to Muhammad, Abu Bakr, and his allies. -
Estimation and Analysis of Supply of Financial Services to Population in the Republic of Belarus
Joint project of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus and Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) «Measuring Access to Finance: Developing Evidence-based Access Policies in Belarus» Estimation and analysis of supply of financial services to population in the Republic of Belarus Executive Summary of the National Survey Minsk, National Bank of the Republic of Belarus 2012 Assessment of Supply of Financial Services The purpose of this review is to assess the availability of data related to the supply of financial services, based on the currently available data sources, and to perform an analysis of such data. It identifies the administrative units of Belarus with the highest and lowest density of access points to financial services. The study was intended to inform finance and credit policies at the national and regional levels, and decisions on the location of financial institutions in different areas of Belarus. The data used in this assessment were provided by the main and regional offices of the National Bank (based on a survey of commercial banks), the Ministry of Finance of Belarus, the postal services operator BelPochta, and the Oblast executive committees. The assessment procedure began with the The analysis of the data adequacy from the point of view of supply. This was followed by calculating the measures of access to finance through various types of financial institutions, such as banks, post offices lombards, credit unions and insurance companies. The measures were compared against a benchmark, defined as the average for ten European countries, or based on the fill access criterion. Regional measures were compared to the national average. -
Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam in Qatar
Language in the Mirror: Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam in Qatar Rehenuma Asmi Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy under the executive committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Rehenuma Asmi All rights reserved ABSTRACT Language in the Mirror: Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam Rehenuma Asmi My study explores language ideologies in the capital city of Doha, Qatar, where school reform movements are placing greater emphasis on English language acquisition. Through ethnography and a revised theory of language ideologies, I argue that as languages come in greater contact in multi-lingual spaces, mediation must occur between the new and old relationships that are emerging as a result of population growth, policy changes and cross-cultural interactions. I interrogate the development concept of the “knowledge economy” as it is used to justify old and new language ideologies regarding Arabic and English. As Qataris change their education systems in response to the economic development framework of the “knowledge economy,” they are promoting language ideologies that designate English as useful for the economy and “global” citizenship and Qatari Arabic and Standard Arabic as useful for religious and cultural reasons. I argue that Standard English, through its association with the “knowledge economy,” becomes “de-localized” and branded an “international” language. This ideology presents English as a modern language free of the society in which it is embedded, to circulate around the globe. In contrast, Standard Arabic is represented as stiff, archaic language of religious traditions and Qatari Arabic is presented as the language of oral culture and ethnonationalism. -

Originally, the existence of the man was a point of consensus amongst historians; however, it was in the 18th century when Orientalists noticed a peculiar pattern regarding his reports which caused a break in the consensus. These narrations came from a single source, namely, Sayf bin Omar Al-Tameemi, a historian that is regarded as weak in the eyes of the scholars of Hadith. This discovery led to the publishing of articles and then books on the subject, which ultimately led Shias, like Murtadha Al-`Askari to adopt the view that Ibn Saba’ was a figment of Al- Tameemi’s imagination. -
Engineering and Structural Geology Evaluation of Khansar-Boien Miyandasht Tunnel
Engineering and Structural Geology Evaluation of Khansar-Boien Miyandasht Tunnel Ghazaleh Edrisi M.Sc. Structural Geology and Tectonics The University of Damghan, Semnan, Iran e-mail: [email protected] Rassoul Ajalloeian Associate Professor The University of Isfahan, Isfahan, Iran e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Lack of geological and tectonical knowledge in a region causes hazard in project implementation. There are many examples related to this issue in Iran and the world. Main purpose of this research is to analyze the fractures because of their importance and effect on the implementation of engineering and civil engineering projects such as Khansar-Boien Miyandasht tunnel. For this purpose, the process and density of the fractures and their spatial-geometric position were investigated. Therefore, joints and faults in the Khansar syncline area and the site of Khansar–Boien Miyandasht tunnel were collected, then processed by interpreted in the software such as Stereo32 and Georient. According to the result, a group of joints can be related to pre-tectonics, another one can be related to syn-tectonics(folding and faulting) and some fractures are related to the post-tectonics. Geomechanically, syn-tectonic fractures are extensive in depth and these issues are very important, so it should be considered in implementing the project of Khansar tunnel. Results of the geological engineering study such as, uniaxial strength test, point loading, Schmidt hammer, and ultra-sonic Test were showed high-resistance massive orbitolina limestone , and alternation of shale , limestone , medium- resistance limestone and black slates include low resistance that lead to apply the supports with higher safety factor. -
