ENTREPRENEURIAL VENTURES

While many of the students of SSCBS have ventured into their start-ups, a large number of ideas and start-ups / proposals were submitted to SIIF for seeking incubation support. After rigorous screening and evaluation by panels of external experts, the following five were approved for incubation under SIIF:

1. Bookyzia Providing books on rent instead of costly procurement of books, helping the students have more books available within same level of fund. 2. GrowFree Growing mushrooms using unconventional growing base material. 3. Hardman Technologies Development of 3-D printers using local components and developing service centers. 4. Prince Academy Using technology to develop and disseminate video based contents on different courses at graduation level. 5. ReneYou Development of induction cooker using innovative solar panels and increasing the sales penetration for unconventional energy based equipment.

PLACEMENT CELL (CDC)

Career Development Centre (CDC), the Placement Cell of the college serves as an interface between the students and the recruiters, offering a host of services in the areas of placements, internships, live projects, personal counselling and support, assistance in resume building and soft skills development. Lectures and sessions with industry practitioners and regular industry interaction via industry visits, pre-placement

40

talks, workshops and compulsory summer internships for the second year students help bring the academic and corporate world closer. All of this helps our students to achieve well-rounded growth and a balanced perspective towards academic knowledge and corporate-ready skills.

With the set-up in the new campus building, the CDC would now have access to a plethora of resources through which both the quantum and quality of its efforts towards securing placement opportunities for the students and their personality development can be increased. Co-located with the Incubation Centre (SIIF) on the first floor of the new campus, the CDC would now have access to fully-air-conditioned dedicated meeting-cum-interview rooms, training and lecture rooms with world-class AV facilities for holding guest lectures and pre-placement talks, a lounge for visiting HR and corporate professionals, dedicated office space for the Placement Officer and the student team, a 25-30 seater conference room and regular interactions with our entrepreneurially minded students via SIIF. This would enable our students to have a greater understanding of the corporate world that they would eventually go out and inhabit, hopefully, with a great degree of success.

Final Placements The fact that CBS doesn’t believe in a one-size-fits-all policy is evident in its placement process, where companies from as many as fifteen sectors, including consulting, insurance, knowledge services, real estate, media, investment banking, PR, IT, shipping, and financial services recruit students who are offered a diverse mix of profiles that included strategic consulting associate, business analyst, equity and other research oriented positions. Quietly, but with increasing success, students of SSCBS have also done well in academic endeavours such as qualifying the CAT (Combined Admission Test for admission in PG Programs in Management at IIMs and elsewhere) and successfully converted opportunities in prestigious institutions for higher students. Notably, Aastha Vij (IIM-A, with offers from IIM-B and IIM-C), Anupam Gupta (University of Texas at Dallas) Archit Pahwa (FMS, DU), Devansh Anand (IIM-A, deferred placements for 2yr work experience at BCG), Hargurpal Singh (XLRI), Faizan Ahmed, Jatin Tuteja and Nishant Doodh (IIM-C), Ravtej Arora (IIM-B), Ria Arora (IIM-L) and Vidit Jain (XLRI) among others have done the college proud this year.

The 2016-17 placement season started in August 2016 and has seen 126 offers for 158 registered students from coveted recruiters like Bain Capability Centre, DE Shaw, McKinsey Knowledge Centre, Nomura, EY, KPMG, CBRE, The Smart Cube, i3C, Nearbuy etc. The highest package of ₹15.5 lakhs p.a. has been offered by DE Shaw and the average package stands at ₹6.2 lakhs p.a. Thus, 79.75% of the students who have registered for placement support from the college have been placed in the corporate sector. On the other hand, many of our students have opted for a few more years of academic rigour and have done SSCBS proud in the sphere of MBA-level academic institutions as well; with students raising the SSCBS banner at prestigious institutions like IIM-A, IIM-B,

41

IIM-C, IIM-L, ISB, Hyderabad, XLRI, University of Dallas at Texas, University of Southern California at Los Angeles, Boston University, IIITs and many such institutions of repute, at both the national and international level.

With the recent launch of our own company for Incubation of start-ups (SIIF), we are hopeful of counting a number of successful student entrepreneurs amongst this list of students who have found success right after their time at SSCBS and have brought laurels to their alma mater in different spheres. We are very fortunate that the CEO of SIIF (Naresh Priyadarshi) is an alumnus of SSCBS himself and brings on board a rich bouquet of corporate (leadership and strategy) experience and passion towards the support and growth of his alma mater - SSCBS.

Summer Internships The college has summer internships as part of the course curriculum, providing corporate exposure and learning and helping to enrich the theoretical classroom learning of the students. Summer internships are usually undertaken at leading companies like BCG, EY, KPMG, PwC, CBRE, Deloitte, Ogilvy, M&C Saatchi, American Express, Aon Hewitt, Alamak, B9 Beverages, Inshorts, Teach for India, Nearbuy, Sberbank, Willis Towers Watson and others. In 2016 – 17, companies such as MetLife, Invest India, Willis Towers Watson and Futures First among others especially came to the college for recruiting interns.

The summer internships are an essential component of the BMS and BBA(FIA) courses and the college lays great emphasis on them and encourages the students to expend strenuous effort during this period. In order to encourage them further, the college recognises the top 3 intership project reports each year. This year, the following students are being recognised for their internship activities: 1. Archit Pahwa (Interned at Tata Power Solar Systems Limited) 2. Shikhar Lohia (Interned at Ogilvy & Mather) 3. Vedika Gulati (Interned at American Express)

Value-added Courses In addition to the curriculum, the college has taken initiative for enhancing the employability, presentation and communication skills of the students. Numerous talks, lectures and interactions have been organized in various guises to help the students develop a better understanding of the business world and entrepreneurship related concepts. The resource persons for these special lectures have been drawn from various professional/business institutions and the alumni of the college to help hone the skills of the students. The facilities now available to us in our new campus should serve as an effective enabler and facilitator in this endeavour. This year, Garima Minocha, Lavanya, Manish Jain, Neeraj Sawhney, Nikhil Jain, Runjhun Gupta and Saurav Arora visited the college to interact with the students. More such interactions are planned for the coming

academic year. Rayaan Jaitly and Satya Mathur actually came back to their alma mater as recuiters of the next batch of CBSites.

Alumni Activities Our Alumni are an important part of the SSCBS family. They are our brand ambassadors, our alter ego, our connect with the corporate world and a reflection on SSCBS as an institution. It is with, perhaps, a bit of justifiable pride that we look at our alumni and feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when we look at the amazing levels of success that they have achieved after leaving the college. Their success is not only visible in the corporate and/or academic spheres, but in the visibility of the country as a whole. In order to connect better with our alumni and to foster their continued association with the college; the college regularly conducts alumni meets.

Support of the alumni for college activities is multi-facted and has been invaluable. This year, on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of their passing out from college, the Alumni Batch of BBS 1991 contributed a corpus of ₹ 3,61,203/- for the award of scholarship in the name of the founder Principal of the college. The Dr. S.S. Gulshan Scholarship is given to two students of the BMS program, to be selected on the basis of academic results of their first three semesters. Such support encourages the current students of the college and fosters a continued link-up with the alumni.

With the set-up of the SIIF in the new campus, we are in the process of rejuvenating our alumni association (CBSAA). Starting with a planned special dinner event to invite the alumni to experience our beautiful new campus, planned elections for the office bearers of the CBSAA, proposed regular interactions with the current students and the alumni and training and learning interactions with our alumni; our road to the future envisages a bigger and brighter role for our valuable alumni.

The efforts of the placement officer, Ms. Manisha Nayyar and the Placement Committee are highly appreciated. (List of CDC student team members is enclosed in Annexure 5)

CONNECTING DREAMS FOUNDATION – SSCBS Chapter CDF SSCBS is one of the chapters of Connecting Dreams Foundation which aims to empower youth and women in rural India through connectivity and entrepreneurship. We, at CDF, “bridge the gap” between the Rural India and Urban Bharat. We aim to achieve this by setting up sustainable models of education, healthcare and livelihood in rural areas and also creating new employment and business opportunities for women in rural areas through a technology-enabled village enterprise. In the last year, CDF SSCBS did many projects related to rural development, Some projects that we undertook and did successfully are: Sanjeevani Pickle Project: The project aimed at connecting the skilled women in the Lalpur village to pickle procurement business. Our chapter's main job was to market that pickle made by the women into the markets in Delhi through various techniques and full market research. We conducted research on the perfect growth strategy for their business. We worked on the product launch strategy and helped them get sustainable and regular demand for their products. This project helped to get regular source of revenue for 15 women in the village who now work together on the project and their

50

income now helps their family to get some basic amenities for their family too impacting around 50 people indirectly. Apna Tech Tree: We worked to troubleshoot the ATT terminal installed in the Lalpur village after finding reasons for its initial failure and trained the villagers on how to use it. With our help they are now able to use the Power of Internet for their basic needs and the ATT is now regularly by around 200 villagers .This helps them to get access to better information related to Education , Health ,Agriculture and latest government schemes. Youth Brigade: Under the Project, digital libraries were installed in the rural school to encourage learning through audio-visual demonstrations for better understanding. There is an attempt to bridge the gap between Rural Bharat and urban India by equipping the rural children with the same facilities that city children enjoy. We believe that there is lot of talent hidden in the rural lot which remains unexplored due to lack of resources with which they can come at par with the urban kids. Village Survey: We also conducted a survey in the village to understand the impact of the various initiatives by CDF in the village and make them more aware about our and government initiatives and how they can benefit from them to fulfil their day to day needs. This helped in increasing the usage of our initiatives and also helped the villagers to know about various schemes which they generally don’t use because of lack of awareness. The efforts of the faculty coordinators are highly appreciated. Faculty Coordinators: Dr. Ajay Jaiswal and Dr. Abhishek Tandon. (List of achievements is enclosed in Annexure 13)

DebSoc – The Debating Society The Debating Society, CBS is a myriad of complex things, but one simple thing it does is speak - speak rationally on decisions we make on a regular basis. Whether it be the -Palestine issue, Modi's assertive stance bound by his RSS shackles, Milton's libertarian ideas, the logic behind 'Free the Nipple' or the philosophy of life itself - all of these transcend beyond just things we hear about but things we have rather become a part of. This action of engagement with every pro & con, merit & demerit helps us widen our perspective and think on a more holistic level. In a fast paced learning environment that SSCBS provides us, this sort of engagement and exposure is necessary for us to be well rounded individuals, especially as we enter the world of ruthless competition and differentiated talents. The Debating Society has grown strength by strength each year- organized 4 successful events, had been exponentially increasing the number of laurels won each year and remains the most avidly awarded society in the college. From beautiful 'a Capella' to effervescent 'ragas', from self-compositions to famous covers. Who needs a music player when you have Dhwani around you? All you have to do is recite a few lyrics and Voila! An impromptu jam session will commence right in front of you. Dhwani is the place for all the music lovers in the college. It is the place where students pursue their love for music amidst the stress of achieving their academic endeavours. When you hear a group of people singing random songs, complete with harmonies, whimsical hand gestures, and singing like no one’s around, you’re getting a glimpse into the life of a Dhwani member. Dhwani also organises Octaves, the annual music event, as a part of Crescendo, the annual cultural fest of the college.
