A typical contingent will be much smaller than the size mentioned above, however one or two times the contingent size may reach or exceed the given tentative size. The Students' Gymkhana almost always participates in the festivals/competitions whose names have been bolded. For festivals marked with a *, there is no need for a student to apply for leave (either because it is held in Kanpur, or because it is held during the vacation period of the Institute). Since most of these festivals are organized on weekends, most students participating in a given festival will need leave for a maximum of two days. No student will participate in more than 2-3 events. In particular, no student will exceed the maximum 5 working days limit for non-medical short leave given in Clause 8.2 of the UG Manual. The Students' Gymkhana will not participate in all the festivals given above. The above is an indicative list of the types of events in which we participate. Typically, each Council will only participate in a few events, but the events in which the Council will participate will change each year. For example, the Cultural Council may decide to participate in Fiesta in the year 2014-15 and Alcheringa in the year 2015-16. In this case, the Council will not participate in Alcheringa in 2014- 15 and Fiesta in 2015-16. The above list cannot be made exhaustive (especially for the Games and Sports Council) as there are many events/competitions/festivals which are not organized every year and whose invitations are received during the year (not at the beginning). Thus, there may be events which are not in the above list in which the students may want to participate in. The contingent size for the Films and Media Council includes students who are participating in online competitions (and hence, would not require leave). .

Even the popular algorithm of STA/LTA requires extensive research to determine basic thresholding parameters so as to trigger an alarm. Also, many times due to human error or other unavoidable natural factors such as thunder strikes or landslides, the algorithm may end up raising a false alarm. This work focuses on detecting earthquakes by converting seismograph recorded data into corresponding audio signals for better perception and then uses popular Speech Recognition techniques of Filter bank coefficients and Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) to extract the features. These features were then used to train a Convolutional Neural Network(CNN) and a Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) network. The proposed method can overcome the above-mentioned problems and help in detecting earthquakes automatically from the waveforms without much human intervention. For the 1000Hz audio data set the CNN model showed a testing accuracy of 91.1% for 0.2-second sample window length while the LSTM model showed 93.99% for the same.

  • Roorkee Diary
Roorkee Diary Anil K Rajvanshi Phaltan, Maharashtra, India [email protected] 1. I was invited in March to IIT Roorkee to be the chief guest at the inaugural session of Cognizance 2014. This is billed by them as the largest techfest in India. Last year I had been invited to give a guest lecture at Techkriti – the premier tech festival at IIT Kanpur. They had also billed it as the largest techfest in India. So all the IITs have to get together to decide whose techfest is really the largest! 2. The fastest way to reach Roorkee is to fly into Jolly Grant (JG) airport in Dehradun and then drive to Roorkee. The JG airport is a small airport recently refurbished and the distance of 66 Km to Roorkee is covered in 2 hours! This is because the roads are absolutely horrible with huge potholes and being single lane with heavy truck and bus traffic. 3. This was my third visit to Roorkee – the first was in 1973 when as a student of IIT Kanpur I had presented a paper on solar energy at the national solar energy conference in Roorkee University (it became IIT only recently). My remembrance of that visit was that Roorkee was a small place and we could go any place in town on a cycle rickshaw. Now it is a growing town with city buses and other modes of motorized transport. The second visit, just for a day, was in the 1990s to attend an MNES workshop. 4. IIT Roorkee campus is small, compact and a nice one.
