Memoranda and Documents A NOTE ON THE ORIGINS OF “UNCLE SAM,” 1810–1820 donald r. hickey ONVENTIONAL wisdom holds that “Uncle Sam,” the popular C personification for the United States government, was inspired during the War of 1812 by Samuel Wilson, who, along with an older brother, Ebenezer, supplied the army with meat from Troy, New York. The Wilsons employed as many as two hundred people, includ- ing many relatives who had moved to Troy to work in the diversified family business. The nieces and nephews referred to Sam Wilson as Uncle Sam, and such was his friendly and easy-going nature that the nickname caught on among other employees and townspeople. Due to confusion over the meaning of the abbreviation “U.S.,” which was stamped on army barrels and supply wagons, the nickname suppos- edly migrated from Wilson to the federal government in 1812.1 The author has incurred numerous debts in writing this article. Georg Mauerhoff of NewsBank provided indispensable guidance in using the NewsBank databases, es- pecially the Readex newspaper collection. ROMAN EMPERORS IN POPULAR JARGON: SEARCHING FOR CONTEMPORARY NICKNAMES (1)1 By CHRISTER BRUUN Popular culture and opposite views of the emperor How was the reigning Emperor regarded by his subjects, above all by the common people? As is well known, genuine popular sentiments and feelings in antiquity are not easy to uncover. This is why I shall start with a quote from a recent work by Tessa Watt on English 16th-century 'popular culture': "There are undoubtedly certain sources which can bring us closer to ordinary people as cultural 'creators' rather than as creative 'consumers'. Historians are paying increasing attention to records of slanderous rhymes, skimmingtons and other ritualized protests of festivities which show people using established symbols in a resourceful way.,,2 The ancient historian cannot use the same kind of sources, for instance large numbers of cheap prints, as the early modern historian can. 3 But we should try to identify related forms of 'popular culture'. The question of the Roman Emperor's popularity might appear to be a moot one in some people's view. Guillaume under the title The Life of Muhammad. This is is by far the oldest (written) account of Muhammad's life in regard to the date of its first composition. -

THE CONCEPT OF BIBLICAL INSPIRATION When the President of your Society graciously asked me to read a paper on the topic of biblical inspiration, he proposed that I review and assess the significant contributions made to it in con- temporary research, and that I suggest some areas in which work might profitably be done in the future. Accordingly, I shall simply devote the time at our disposal to these two points. With regard to the first, I believe that many new insights have been provided during the last decade by the studies of Pierre Benoit,1 Joseph Coppens,2 Karl Rahner,3 and Bernhard Brink- mann; * and I shall attempt to present their work in summary form. As regards further possible theological speculation, I wish to amplify a suggestion made recently by my colleague, the Reverend R. A. F. MacKenzie. "Since the theory of instrumental causality has been so usefully developed, and has done so much to clarify—up to a point—the divine-human collaboration in this mysterious and won- derful work, what is needed next is fuller investigation of the efficient and final causalities, which went to produce an OT or NT book." Introduction Many of Philo's references to xv16wa are ordered with remark- able consistency. Gen 1:2, for example, is the anchor for Philo's description of the cosmic 1t\l&ÜfLa..1The divine inbreathing of Gen 2 2:7 provides the basis for Philo's anthropology of the human spirit.2 Philo's references to the inspiration of the divine spirit, on the other hand, are attached more tenuously to the Bible. Book Review – a Short History of the Jewish People
Book Review – A Short History of the Jewish People A Short History of the Jewish People, from Legendary Times to Modern Statehood, is a well-regarded and accessible history of a religiously significant people by an acclaimed author. From the Exodus to the Holocaust, the Jews have occupied major roles in Western history, and their triumphs and travails have been encyclopedically documented. Raymond P. Scheindlin, a rabbi and professor of Medieval Hebrew Literature at The Jewish Theological Seminary, has provided a clear and concise text, perfect for an initial overview of the subject. The author begins with the advent of the Hebrew monarchy around 1200 BC. Since its inception, Israel has been a tiny country on the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, and as such has been vulnerable to larger and more powerful neighbors. Initially, the Egyptians to the southwest and the Assyrians/Babylonians to the east battled for hegemony in Israel. In the 3rd century BC, the Greeks and Persians became the contenders, followed by the Romans/Byzantines and the Arabs/Persians. Even today major powers such as the United States, Russia, China, the Muslim world, and the Jews fight over this tiny piece of real estate. It is hard to think of any ground on the planet that has heard more hatred, and soaked up more blood. Considering the long history of anti-Semitism throughout the world, culminating in the Holocaust, it is hard to think of any people on the planet that has suffered more, as a percentage of its population, over the millennia. Scheindlin’s discussion of Biblical events is more secular than religious, even from a Jewish perspective, but he provides interesting counterpoints to those used to reading ancient Hebrew history with theological eyes.
