(50-75) 20 - 59/453 b R8 NGC AU55 Sharply struck. Crude Indian Head 1863 dated 10 Cent piece struck in Brass. Rare reverse die that is usually found in worn condition often with problems. An EF+ brought $386.10 in our July 2000 sale. From the Mark Glazer, Steve Tanenbaum and Paul Koppenhaver collections. (500-750) 21 - 68/355 a R4 NGC MS63 BN Or a bit better with 10% Red. 1863 Not One Cent. A raw AU+ realized $79.20 in our December 2008 sale. From the Steve Tanenbaum and Cindy Wibker collections. (150-200)

022 023 024 22 - 69/69 a R10 NGC MS62 BN With traces of mint red all on the normally struck side. Unique single die doubleheader of a 1863 Indian Head. Mark Glazer is fascinated by mint errors and built an impressive collection of overstrikes and other interesting pieces. Most have been sold over the years but as with his other Patriotics, he retained the Best of the Best. Single die doubleheaders are certainly the rarest errors in the entire Civil War token field with only a dozen or so known of all varieties. These tokens were struck using a single die one side at a time. This resulted in the side struck first being slightly wavy. This particular piece is prototypical, note the slightly sunk in area at the center of the initial strike. A NGC XF45 example of 87/87 a brought $1,485 in our July 2014 sale. From the Mark Glazer collection acquired from Steve Tanenbaum and earlier part of the "Found In Wall" contemporary hoard of Civil War tokens found hidden in the wall of a building being renovated. This would seem to indicate it is a "real" error rather than a mint concoction or something made specially for collectors. (2000-3000) 23 - 71/148 a Unlisted NGC MS64 BN Attractively toned with nearly Proof Like reverse. 1863 Indian Head with a balding bearded man thought to be John Stanton on the reverse. Stanton manufactured the vast majority of Indian Head Civil War tokens. From an image supplied by the president of the firm's current incarnation, Long-Stanton Manufacturing, it seems clear this is Stanton. See the link http://www.longstanton.com/About.aspx. There is a more complete version on the company’s home page but you need to wait for it to cycle to the front. Very rare obverse die and unlisted variety, the die combination is currently listed only in Plate which we have never seen offered publicly. An EF example of the much more available R7 84/148 a brought $1,105.50 in our June 2005 sale. From the Mark Glazer and Henry South collections. (4000-6000) 24 - 75/459 a R8 NGC MS65 RB 50% Red more so on the reverse. 1863 Indian Head with rare A Business Card reverse die. A raw MS64 in our December 2012 auction brought $1,415. From the Mark Glazer collection earlier from a Kreisberg sale. (1500-2000) 25 - 76/523 a R4 NGC AU55 BN 1864 Grindstone Flagging & Building Stones. Two very scarce dies. An EF brought $175 in our June 2013 auction. (200-300) 26 - 77/331 a R4 Raw AU 1863 Indian Chief Army & Navy. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (50-75)

Lot Description Grade Comments/Estimate Civil War Patriotic Tokens 27 - 85/431 a R8 Raw VF 1863 Indian Head with Value Me As You Pleas spelling error. A similar example sold for $577.50 in our March 2010 sale. (500-750) 28 - 87/356 a R1 Raw VF Struck 30% Off Center with a tiny rim clip. Indian Head 1863 Not One Cent. Double mint error with unusually large off center strike. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (50-75) 29 - 93/93 a R9 Raw VF 1863 Indian Head with full brockage mint error reverse. These dramatic errors are created when a struck token sticks to the die and fails to eject. A subsequent token is then struck with one normal die and an incused image from the previous token acting as a die. If the first token stays stuck, each subsequent strike's incused side is less distinct. An exaggerated example of this is 107/107 which can come quite blurry. From the Steve Tanenbaum collection earlier from Jerry Schaeper June 1985. (750-1000) 30 - 93/362 a R2 NGC MS64 BN Attractively toned with very nice luster, normal weak date. 1863 Indian Head Not One Cent signed H on the obverse for die sinker Charles D. Horter and signed on the reverse JGW thought to be engraver James Wilson or Horter neighbor and book seller John G. Wells. It is fairly unusual to have the combination of two differently signed dies. (75-100)

031 032 037 31 - 96/129 a R9 NGC MS65 BN Nicely toned and nearly Proof Like. Popular Lincoln / Indian Head double header struck in Copper. Rare die combination that when found is frequently weakly struck. A weakly struck NGC MS64 of the more available Brass composition realized $1,127 in our March 2010 auction. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III and Ken Bauer collections. (1500-2000) 32 - 96A/131A a R8 NGC MS63 BN Obverse nearly Proof Like. Rare Lincoln / Indian doubleheader struck in Copper with very rare obverse die. A more red raw MS64 brought $1,760 in our September 2010 auction. From the Mark Glazer and Larkin Wilson collections. (1500-2000) 33 - 97/389 a R2 Raw AU+ Trace Red and well struck. Millions For Contractors Fort Lafayette Not One Cent For The Widows. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (75-100) 34 - 99/292 a R3 NGC MS64 BN 10% Red a bit weakly struck as usual for this variety. Union And Liberty 1863 One Country. Very rarely seen in any degree of Uncirculated. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (200-300) 35 - 105/355 a R3 Raw AU in Star Not One Cent. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (50-75) 36 - 110/442 a R1 NGC MS64 RB 40% Red. George Washington New York. From the Steve Tanenbaum and Cindy Wibker collections. (100-150) 37 - 113/294 a R9 NGC MS64 RB 50% Red and boldly struck. Exceedingly rare muling of George Washington Pater Patriae with Freedom reverse normally only seen on Lincoln tokens. The only example we have seen offered, a MS64 example of the more available 113/114A a brought $1,700 in our February 2014 auction. From the Mark Glazer and Andrew Zabriskie collections, earlier from Sotheby's June 1999 sale. (3000-4000) 38 - 115/115A d R9 NGC MS63 40% Bright. George and Martha Washington struck in Copper-Nickel with a Plain edge. Though not noted in Fuld, these come in both Plain and Reeded edge. From the Larry Dziubek collection. (500-750) 39 - 117/420 b R4 Raw MS63 30% Bright. 1863 George Washington Exchange struck in Brass. From an early die state without die crack or cud that is often seen on Copper examples. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (75-100) 40 - 118/418 a R2 NGC MS63 RB 50% Red. 1863 George Washington Peace For Ever with hands labeled North and South shaking. (75-100) 41 - 123/0 f R5 Raw MS63 20% Bright. A restrike struck in Silver from an original die with blank reverse. George Washington in a large Capitol Plastic holder stating it was struck from the original die and 350 were struck. A MS63 brought $220 in our March 2010 sale. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (200-300) 42 - 125/294 a R7 NGC XF45 BN President 1864 Freedom. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (150-200) 43 - 125/432 ao R8 Raw EF Details With some short old scratches on each side. Struck over another token likely 107/432. 1864 Lincoln No Compromise With Traitors. Very rare Patriotic struck over another Patriotic. This piece was mis-struck in some way resulting is six obverse stars where Lincoln would normally be spelled out. Opposite on the reverse is an arc shaped blank area though traces of a leaf and berry can be seen with effort. We suspect the under type is a 107/432 because of the oddly shaped crude stars that match those used on die 107 and little else; the planchet stock is the same as that used on 107/432 and of course the combinations share the reverse and were made at the same mint. This die combination is unlisted with any under types and all Patriotics over Patriotics are very rare. A normally struck VF brought $231 in our June 2011 sale. (500-750) 44 - 127/177 j R4 Raw MS62 10% Bright, a bit weakly struck as usually seen with nice luster for variety. 1864 Lincoln First In War, First In Peace 1863 struck in German Silver. Note the two different dates used. A VF sold for $165 in our July 2009 auction. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (300-400) 45 - 127/201 a R4 Raw EF Normal very weak strike at centers. Lincoln 1864 with Our Union shield. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (50-75) 46 - 127/248 a R4 Raw EF 1864 Abraham Lincoln OK. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (75-100) 47 - 127/248 b R3 Raw AU Details Trace Bright mostly on the reverse with a few light hairlines mostly on the obverse fields. 1864 Abraham Lincoln OK struck in Brass. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (75-100) 48 - 127/248 j R7 NGC MS62 Or a bit better with 20% original bright mint luster. 1864 Lincoln OK struck in German Silver. (100-150) 52 - 130/349 a R9 Raw VF With traces of Gilt plating primarily on the reverse, unlisted as such. Abraham Lincoln 1864 with canon, drums, rifles and flags on reverse. A bisecting obverse die crack accounts for its rarity in all combinations and compositions. One of the keys to a Lincoln die set. A MS60 with mottled obverse toning sold for $866.80 in our July 2009 sale. Dewitt AL 1864-78 From the Ed Rogalski collection. (300-400)

053 059 060 53 - 130/349 f R9 NGC MS63 10% Bright lightly toned and nearly Proof Like. Abraham Lincoln 1864 with canon, drums, rifles and flags on reverse struck in Silver. A bisecting obverse die crack accounts for its rarity in all combinations and compositions. One of the keys to a Lincoln die set and the only example we have seen offered in Silver. We sold a raw MS63 Gilt example of this die combination in July 2009 for $1,705. Dewitt AL 1864-78 From the Dave Bowers collection earlier from the Western Reserve. (75-100) 59 - 146/283 e R9 Raw MS61 50% Bright with nice cartwheel luster and some minor tin pest on obverse. Rare and popular combination of Eagle and Anchor and General Burnsides dies in White . This Eagle and Anchor die like its more famous Hunting Dogs cousin has horizontal lines that add to the luster and beauty of the design. We sold an example of the R8 German Silver variety in MS63 for $947.10 in our April 2000 auction. From the Dave Bowers collection. (1500-2000) 60 - 147/227 a fp R6 NGC AU58 Or a bit better, toned with 60% or more original Silvering. Popular Am I Ready 1861 pilgrim token. This plated version has been removed from the current book and replaced by a footnote. This is the normal composition for this die combination, over 60% by our count. It is very hard to find a Brass example that isn't very worn or still has traces of silvering. An NGC AU55 that was brighter with a bit more silvering brought $951 in our July 2012 sale. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (1000-1500) 61 - 155/400 a R4 Raw VF Tiny rim clip mint error. 1863 Union with crude eagle. Scarce Indiana Primitive die combination. The reverse is Higgin's Indiana Primitive version of Scovill's Union shield die 163. The present specimen is unusually well struck and reveals that Union is not spelled out with letters, but is only represented by a series of thick vertical lines. An EF brought $130 in our July 2009 sale. (200-300) 66 - 167/318 a R5 Raw VF+ Union 1863 Army & Navy. Two scarce dies. (75-100) 67 - 168/311 a R1 Raw EF Cannon and cannon balls 1863 Army & Navy. Hunting Dogs with Union 1863 reverse struck in Copper. The obverse is the famous Hunting Dogs die, though it might just as easily be known as Running Dogs or Pointing Dogs. Either way it is a fascinating die, so much so that the late Bret Palser made it literally his calling card. In 2004 he sold this very token for $20,000 with much fanfare and publicity in World. More recently we sold a NGC MS66 BN paired with Burnside on our web site for $6,250 in April 2015. (8000-12000) 77 - 188/384 a R3 Raw AU+ Industry 1863 Beehive. From the Dr. W. Two rare dies, though a bit overrated at R9, when encountered, it is usually VF at best more often than not with problems. The last problem free piece we sold at auction was a FINE+ that realized $505 way back in April 1996. From the Mark Glazer and Steve Tanenbaum collection. The First Ironclad 1862 Made From the Armor Plate Of The Merrimac. The Iron from the Merrimac was not recovered until well after the Civil War and consequently it has been delisted, however, it is still collected along with the series as an important war relic. A bit dark, slightly granular EF realized $1,550 in our August 2015 sale. This example, the finest we have seen offered, is from our July 2006 sale where it realized $3,550 in very spirited bidding (dueling phone bids long before we accepted internet bids). (4000-6000) 111 - 500/505A b Delisted Raw EF Decatur with eagle struck in Brass. Delisted as it is believed to predate the Civil War and was actually part of a series of Whist counters listing personages from the War of 1812 though Monroe is misspelled on one piece. We sold a raw MS64 example with the more frequently seen Presidents House reverse for $1,559 in our December 2012 sale. (3000-4000) 113 - 508/510A a R8 NGC MS65 RB 80% Red. Sutler Check Rice & Byers Redeemed in Goods to Soldiers Only Fort Still, Indian Territory. The denomination on this piece was reduced by counterstamping a 0 over the 5 in the struck 15 Cents reverse. Formerly NL U-10Bb and at that time the now considered Unique 15 Cent variety was unknown. It is interesting to compare this and the following reduced denominations tokens with the Garman pieces to follow where the worry was denominations being increased. (750-1000) 122 - IT-FS-10Bc Unlisted Raw EF Details With some areas of roughness from burial and expected flatness opposite counterstamp. Sutler Check Rice & Byers Redeemed in Goods to Soldiers Only Fort Still, Indian Territory. The denomination on this piece was reduced by counterstamping a 1 over the 5 in the struck 50 Cents reverse. Unlisted in both editions of the Sutler book. Apparently the 10 Cent denomination proved more useful to the Sutler and at least some 15 and 50 pieces were devalued. It will be interesting to see if any adjusted 25 Cent or less likely One Dollar tokens from this Sutler are ever discovered. (750-1000) 123 - KY-01-10C R8 NGC MS63 BN 20% Red more so on the obverse. This is the largest denomination for this prolific issuer, though there is a "Blank Check" example with no stamp. On this variety the last zero is presumed to have been added for nefarious reasons resulting in the need for this Sutler to add Xs to 5 and 10 Cent varieties to prevent alteration. On this variety the first two digits are usually too far to the right to easily accommodate the final number. More definitively the Zeros are from different punches, the first having an oval interior while the second is more squarish. A fascinating piece with a great story. A raw MS62 brought $395 in our October 2011 auction. Formerly PA I-100B. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (750-1000) 140 - PA-72-05B R8 PCGS AU58 A. W. H. An EF sold for $126 in our March 2008 auction. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (150-200) 375 - LU M-1b R9 Raw VF+ Robin's Garden Union with Childs style eagle on reverse. Most certainly a Civil War token made in Chicago likely for a beer garden, but where was the commissioning merchant located. It may end up being Chicago but to date directory research has yielded no results. A very rare merchant seeming destined to one day find a home. (3000-4000) 376 - SNL-10b1 Unlisted Raw MS62 Trace Bright. Pittsburgh Landing 10 Camp Shiloh April 6th & 7th 1862 signed by Die Sinker H. Miller of Louisville Kentucky. A very interesting and popular token yet difficult to classify. Is it a Patriotic or is it a Store Card? Why and when was it issued? A mystery awaiting discovery. The present example is one of the nicest we have encountered, perhaps second only to another somewhat brighter NGC MS62 in our January 2015 sale that brought $2,280. From the Steve Tanenbaum collection. (1500-2000) 377 - NC-OH-V 2a ANACS MS64 BRN Trace Red all on the obverse. Albert Ross Druggist, Cincinnati struck in Copper. It has been shown that these tokens were issued after the Civil War and consequently now listed in the Non-Contemporary section of the Store Card book. Formerly OH165FA-2a. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (75-100) 378 - NC-WI-D 2½ao Raw VF Details With some light marks. Struck over a Patriotic Civil War token. Wood Co. Bridge Company 2½. Raw VF Coin VG but porous. The identity of IB is still unknown but is now considered to be from Quebec Canada. (25-50) 380 - W. BROWN on the obverse of 1848 Large Cent. NGC AU55 BN Coin VF. Rulau lists as Pennsylvania silversmith and watchmaker William Brown active 1823-37 and consequently assigns him to the Hard Times era as HT-A401. This is apparently later, Rulau states that from 1845-49 he may have been from Albany New York. Brunk 1215. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (75-100) 381 - COCKO on the reverse of an 1807 Large Cent. Raw VF Coin VG with some marks. The final O appears to be a design rather than a letter and may hold the key to identifying the issuer. 597 611 617 597 - MILLER NY 265 Raw VF With some light planchet striations as struck. Francis Patent Screw & Fancy Boat Establishment New York struck in Brass with Plain edge. Joseph Francis (1801-1893) was a famous boat builder and holder of many patents. On April 23, 1833 he received his first patent for a portable screw boat. It was called that not because it used a screw propeller, but instead because it was made in sections to be portable and was literally screwed together when ready for use. This seemingly places this token solidly within the Hard Times period and even though Rulau himself dates this issue to (1832-33) he still assigns it to the Early American section of his standard catalog. Exceedingly rare, Steve Tanenbaum had noted on his holder that this was the only example he had seen in 35+ years. Unfortunately, fate intervened and he was not able to see Ford's specimen when it was sold a few years ago. These are the only two we have seen offered. This is the Rulau plate specimen from the Steve Tanenbaum and Robert Lindesmith collections, earlier from Bowers and Merena's March 2000 sale where it brought $1,840.
