Probably more exciting if you either love ot hate the subject matterBy FJK1138Not being a religious person, I can read about Anton LaVey and the Church if Satan with a completely open mind. Whether or not you want to believe, love, or fear anything associated with the Church is entirely up to you. I learned of him in the 80s during all the Satanic Panic associated with all the heavy metal music I grew up on, and that is what primarily drew me to read this book. There is no doubt that Anton was an intelligent and reasonable person who formed a religion based on a mixture of common sense, a dislike of Christian dogma, and a dash of all things theatrical thrown in for good measure.

  • The Satanic Bible Anton Szandor Lavey
Called “The Black Pope” by many of his followers, Anton LaVey began the road to High Priesthood of the Church of Satan when he was only 16 years old and an organ player in a carnival: “On Saturday night I would see men lusting after half‐naked girls dancing at the carnival, and on Sunday morning when I was playing the organ for tent‐show evangelists at the other end of the carnival lot, I would see these same men sitting in the pews with their wives and children, asking God to forgive them and purge them of carnal desires. And the next Saturday night they’d be back at the carnival or some other place of indulgence. “I knew then that the Christian Church thrives on hypocrisy, and that man’s carnal nature will out!” From that time early in his life his path was clear. Finally, on the last night of April, 1966– Walpurgisnacht, the most important festival of the believers in witchcraft–LaVey shaved his head in the tradition of ancient executioners and announced the formation of The Church Of Satan. He had seen the need for a church that would recapture man’s body and his carnal desires as objects of celebration. “Since worship of fleshly things produces pleasure,” he said, “there would then be a temple of glorious indulgence. .” The Satanic Bible Anton Szandor LaVey For Diane Dedications To: Bernadino Logara, who knew the value of money Karl Haushofer, a teacher without a classroom Rasputin, who knew the magic of a child Sir Basil Zaharoff, a gentleman Cagliostro, a rogue Barnabas Saul, the link with Mount Lalesh Ragnar Redbeard, whose might is right William Mortensen, who looked .

“Playing with Art and Artifice: Religious Satanism as Total Environment” Cimminnee Holt1 Introduction “The essence of any magical working is a complete evocation. It is more important to experience total emotional response to one’s environment than all the ‘occult’ knowledge in the world.” – Anton Szandor LaVey2 Anton Szandor LaVey’s (1930-1997) founding of the Church of Satan (CoS) in 1966 was a significant shift in satanic discourse. LaVey is arguably the originator of modern Satanism as a cohesive, codified religion, but there is a long history of how the figure of Satan has been interpreted and reinterpreted by theologians, artists, and philosophers alike. The Hebraic ha-satan in the Book of Job translates as “the Satan,” a designation meaning “the Adversary” or “the Accuser” (Job 1:6 NRSV).3 The Satan is not opposed to God; he is among God’s messengers (mal’āk), a servant in the divine court.4 Under Christian theological interpretations, an accusation of being “satanic” becomes a rhetorical tool to denigrate heretics, pagans, and Jews as the perceived enemies of Christianity.5 In the Enlightenment, Satan’s narrative is reinterpreted yet again, as artists, philosophers, and writers portray satanic figures as a symbol of intellectual non-conformity and sexual liberation, as suavely challenging conventions and the status quo.6 Satan has 1 Concordia University 2 Anton Szandor LaVey, The Devil’s Notebook (Los Angeles: Feral House, 1992), 77. 3 The Hebrew text translates as: “One day the heavenly beings came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them”; Job 1:6.

Confronting the Constitutional Order: Reconciling Satan and the Free Exercise of Religion Julia Wells Honors Defense Date: May 8, 2020 Thesis Advisor: Professor Jenna Reinbold Defense Committee: Professor Christopher Vecsey Professor Benjamin Stahlberg 1 In defending the separation of church and state, James Madison wrote, “The Religion…of every man must be left to the conviction and conscience of every man; and it is the right of every man to exercise it as these may dictate.”1 The crux of Madison’s argument was that if the government were allowed to interfere in people’s religious choices, the government would be able to choose or remove people’s religious practices at will. In Madison's conception, one's freedom of conscience precedes one's commitment to the government, and therefore shouldn't be within the power of government to regulate. Since the founding of the United States, religious freedom has been one of the most venerated values, but determining which religions are afforded religious freedom has historically been very contentious. This principle of freedom of conscience was translated into the U.S. Constitution in the form of the very first words of the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”2 The establishment clause prevents the government from creating a state church, while the free exercise clause limits the government’s ability to force people to act in violation of their religion. Limiting government engagement with religion is difficult everywhere, but it is especially difficult for the U.S.

CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Publikations- und Dokumentenserver der Universitätsbibliothek Marburg Marburg Journal of Religion: Volume 7, No. 1 (September 2002) Diabolical Authority: Anton LaVey, The Satanic Bible and the Satanist "Tradition"1 James R. Lewis University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, USA Dept. of Philosophy and Religious Studies eMail: [email protected] We have a bible. We have a pro-human dogma. We have a church. We have a tradition. - From the Church of Satan's official website. The status of The Satanic Bible as an authoritative scripture-or, perhaps more accurately, as a kind of quasi-scripture-within the Satanic subculture was initially brought to my attention during my first face-to-face encounter with Satanists in the Spring of 2000. Via the internet, I had found a small Satanist group in Portage, Wisconsin, which was about an hour south of where I resided at the time. This group, the Temple of Lylyth, distinguishes itself from Anton LaVey's brand of Satanism chiefly by its emphasis on feminine nature of the Dark Power. I arranged to meet with them in Portage on a Friday evening in connection with a research project on which I was working at the time. Over the course of our conversation, the founder and then leader of the group mentioned that on Friday evenings he was usually downtown where a small group of fervent Christians regularly set up what might be called a "preaching station" to spread the Gospel. This young fellow (he was nineteen at the time) would confront them as a practicing Satanist.

  • Information for Prison Chaplains
Church of Satan PO Box 666, Poughkeepsie, NY 12602-0666 www.churchofsatan.com [email protected] Information for Prison Chaplains Church History Founded on April 30, 1966 in San Francisco by Anton Szandor LaVey, the Church of Satan is the first above-ground religious organization dedicated to the acceptance of Man’s nature as an animal living in a cosmos that is indifferent to his existence. To Satanists, Satan is a symbol who represents pride, liberty, and individualism—qualities often defined as "Evil" by people who believe in and worship external deities. Satanism is thus not Devil worship. There is no belief in God, Satan, the soul, the supernatural or in any form of afterlife. LaVey had a background in the circus and carnival, playing both organ and calliope for the performers and even spent time as a lion tamer. He also worked freelance as a photographer for the San Francisco Police department and thus his earthy experiences led him to reject religions in general as being unrealistic in their beliefs. He saw existing religions as a means for controlling the masses, and since most people seem to want and need some sort of unearthly parental figure, he considered that most religions had been invented to meet that need. But LaVey noticed throughout history that there were iconoclastic men, creative thinkers who were not believers, such as Nietzsche, George Bernard Shaw, Mark Twain, Lord Byron, Charles Baudelaire and others, who saw Satan as not representing "Evil," but as a figure who embodied human resistance to authority, who championed the pleasures of life on earth, who saw through falsehoods and accepted the harsh realities of life.

The modern role of the occult in society. Witches, Satanists, Vampires, Horror films, Halloween, and more. By Brent MacDonald Introduction The themes of Halloween deserve more than a once a year cursory look. Topics many people feel are only worth examining in the few weeks prior to Halloween have grown in popularity year round — within the entertainment industry and in growing segments of the population. The last number of decades have seen a rise in Satanism, witchcraft, and even vampirism. Beyond these blatant categories, societies' growing craving for the occult has prompted us to create this new publication entitled "Hell-o-ween All Year Round." Our three previous versions of the booklet entitled "Hell-o-ween: A Christian Perspective" were our most requested publication for a six year period. While these earlier booklets grew in completeness with each revision, they failed to provide comprehensive details on Satanism, witchcraft and other areas. Perhaps this additional information was unnecessary in a mere examination of the popular celebration of Halloween — but not within the context of a detailed look at the growth of the occult. The diversity we found, in occultic beliefs and practices, have required individual sections for each of a number of topics. These sections at times may appear to totally unrelated. While some ties to Halloween may be addressed in each section, the overall significance and celebration of Halloween has been reserved for the final segments. While some may question the quantity of details provided, we feel it is important to accurately represent the practices discussed. One of the greatest complaints, by occult practitioners of virtually all stripes, is the 2 perceived and often very real misrepresentation of their beliefs by others — especially Christians.

At first sight, the most striking to me was that this guy had written a Satanic Bible . The name sounded enthralling: fascinating and dangerous at the same time. What could be written within a Satanic Bible ? Who was this man that we used to call the Black Pope ? I chose it as the subject of my Maturity Work knowing almost nothing more except the fact that LaVey was the founder of the Church of Satan , and author of The Satanic Bible . Therefore the structure of my work came slowly into being, only after many readings and discussions on the subject, and in fact, it never stopped evolving until the end.
