5 6 Introduction IheardaboutAntonSzandorLaVeyforthetimeinMarilynManson'sautobiography: TheLongHardRoadoutofHell .Atfirstsight,themoststrikingtomewasthatthisguyhad writtena Satanic Bible .Thenamesoundedenthralling:fascinatinganddangerousatthesame time.Whatcouldbewrittenwithina Satanic Bible ?Whowasthismanthatweusedtocall the Black Pope ? IchoseitasthesubjectofmyMaturityWorkknowingalmostnothingmoreexceptthe fact that LaVey was the founder of the Church of Satan , and author of The Satanic Bible . Therefore the structure of my work came slowly into being, only after many readings and discussionsonthesubject,andinfact,itneverstoppedevolvinguntiltheend. Besidethis,theChurchofSatanbeingpurelyanamericanphenomenon:Ihadtowork forthebiggestpartwithenglishwrittenbooksandarticles. Itisbasically forthesereasons thatmyworkiswritteninEnglish. Thegoalofmyworkistostudyaphenomenon:AntonLaVey'sSatanism;todefineit, study its particularities, its motivation and its influence. To do this I will first discuss his relationandcorrespondences,withpastorganizationsandmovements:toseewhatpreceded LaVey.ThenIwilldiscussLaVey'sideasandwritings:todelveintothecoreofthesubject. Wewillseethen,thatLaVeyhashadagreatinfluenceonposteriorsatanicmovements.As myhypothesisinthisstudyisthatLaVey'scharismaisoneofthemaincausesofhisfameand success,Iwillbrieflydescribehis legendary life. Myworkiscomposedoftwoparts: ThefirstpartofthisstudydrawsasketchofwhatwasSatanismbeforeLaVey.Ina parallelmanner,PartIalsopresentssomesymbolismsandfigurationsoftheDevilatcertain periods,whichIhavechosenbecauseoftheiranalogieswithLaVey'sconception.Thisstudy startsfromthebeginning,thatistosayfromtherepresentationofSatanintheChristianBible, andendsdescribinghowtheChurchofSatancameintobeing. Then the second part presents briefly the Church of Satan, and then deals with LaVey's ideas about Satan and compares them to some earlier Movement and earlier representations.OneoftheroleofthischapteristosituateLaVeyinthe"historyofSatanism" andtoshowwhatarehisparticularities.ThedescriptionofLaVey'sthoughtisalsoessential, to have an idea of what is really LaVey's Satanism. The second part goes on discussing LaVey'sinfluenceonmodernSatanism,andthusmakesadraftofapossibleinterpretationof LaVey'smodernSatanism.Then,itendswithabriefdescriptionofLaVey'suncommonand startling life and personality . Which cannot be omitted in a complete study of LaVey's Satanism.

A brief history of Satanism EvenifmanyofthemoderngroupsofSatanistsareinspiredbyhimandhisSatanic Bible 1, the history of Satanism doesn't begin with LaVey. That is the reason why it is necessarytostudyhis"predecessors"inordertohaveaglobalvisionofwhattheworldof satanism(andeventuallyoccultism)lookedlikeatthetimeTheChurchofSatanwascreated. Toprovideabackgroundforsatanismwillalsohelpuslaterwhenwewillbelookingforthe influencesdifferentfigureshadonLaVey. Here we could make two parallel studies: an investigation of the evolution of the representationofthefigureofSataninpopularimagination,inpopularnotion(e.g.froma literate or an artistic point of view), or a investigation of the Satanist groups at different periods(fromasociologicalpointofview).Evenifbothcanberelated,asmygoalhereisto situate LaVey's organisation compared with his predecessors, we will concentrate on the secondoneandmakeconnectionstotheotherwhenit is necessary. ButfirstofallIwillbeginwithabriefchapteraboutthefigureofSatanintheBible. Satan in the Bible : IntheBible,Heismostoftencalled Satan or the Devil butsometimesalsobyother names:Tempter;Beelzebud;Belial;GreatDragon;Fatheroflies...etc. The word Satan comes from the Hebrew saTan and means adversary . In the Old Testamenttheword“satan”isused24times.Ineverycaseexceptonethewordisusedwith itsdefinitearticle(thesatan).Inthesecasesandaccordingtoitsetymologytheword satan , as acommonname,isusedthereinageneralsense.Thatistosaythat satan doesnotreferto onespecificcharacter,butcanbetranslatedintoenemy or adversary .Forexamplethatisthe casein1Samuel29,4,wherethehebrewword satan hasbecome adversary or enemy inour modernversions. However,further,thetermisusedtocallanangelwhoseroleisoneofanattorney accusing man before God. "Does Job fear God for nothing? the satan replied. Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.” GodacceptsthatthesatandestroysallJobowns,andkillsJob’schildren.Thesatan hereisnotadevil,heplaystheroleofanaccuser,anattorneyandactsinordertoprotect God’sinterests.ButtestingJob’spietyandhisheart,heactsforthefirsttimelikeatempter. IntheOldTestament,itisonlyin1Chronicles21,1thattheword satan appearsas Satan (a proper name): here Satan incites David to number Israel and so provokes God’s anger. IntheOldTestamentSatanisnotdescribedasTheAdversaryofGodandmankind.At first satan isageneraltermusedtonameanadversary,thenitbecomesanappellationwho designates an accuser who serves and advises God. And Satan is finally pictured as we usuallyfigureHimintheNewTestament. NowhereintheNewTestamentwefindanyentiredescriptionoftheconcept,northe doctrine of Satan. To conceive His characteristics and His work we have to recollect fragments.ButHisstoryseemstobeclear,intheApocalypseJohnpicturestherebellionof Satan,whocanbeeasilyidentifiedwithsatan,theaccuser.Historically,Satan,passesfrom anyadversary,toanangelwhoseworkistoaccusemaninTheOldTestament,tofinallythe revoltedangel,theAdversaryofGod,intheNewTestament. Intheapocalypse,wefindthebestdescriptionofSatan(Rev12).Heisdescribedasa GreatRedDragonwithsevenheadsandtenhorns,andsevencrownsonHisheads.WithHis tailHedrawsthethirdofthestarsfromtheskytotheEarth.Here,Satanisalsoidentified withtheOldSerpentthattemptedEveandtheonewhobroughtevilonEarth: "that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray" (thatisalsothecasein Wis2.2324/2Co11,315).Despitethis,initiallytheserpentwasnosatanicpersonification, buttheevangeliststookitastheDevil. TheGreatDragonstandsinfrontofawoman,whoisgivingbirth,inordertoeather child.HoweverGodsavesthebaby.Wefindheresomesymbols:thestarsdrawntoEarthare theangelswho followedSataninHisFall(then calledthedemons);the womanrepresents Eve,whohavingbeentempted,hasalsopermittedtheEvilintheworld,andinconsequence allherdescendantsarethreatenedbytheDevil.ButGodishereofferingasalvation.Satanis thendefeatedbythearchangelMikeal,whosenamemeaninginHebrew:“theonewhoislike God”.SatanisthrowndownonEarth,andavoicewarnedtheinhabitantsoftheEarth: “The Devil has gone down to you, He is filled with fury, because He knows that his time is short” . ThisisthebeginningofSatan'sreignonEarth.Hisreign,weknow,willbedestroyed byGodattheendoftheworld.TheChristhasinfactalreadywonHisfightwithSatanwhen heresistedtotemptationinthewilderness.Inaddition,eachexorcismofdemonsperformed byJesusisapredictionofGod'sfuturevictoryuponEvil. Tosummarize:intheBibleSatanistheAdversaryofManandGod.Hetriestoseduce Mantosin,andconcentratesallHispowertoleadmantoevil.Hehasthepowerofdeath,but onlyasanexecutionner,notastheLord.JewandChristianlitteraturewillthenassembleall theevilunderHisname,andsomakeHimthepersonification of evil. As a consequence, sincethe2 nd century,SatanwasknowninthechristiantraditionastheKingofHell,darkness, deathandsin,andgoverningarealempire.

9 DuringthefollowingcenturiesanduntiltheendofthefirstmillenniumtheDevilwas seenasanexterior(toman)andpolymorphicfigure.ThatimageofaDevilwhoisnottotally bad, that we can manipulate and take advantage of, was due to the deeprooted pagan traditionsthathadnevertotallydisappeared 1. Thenaboutthe1112 th centuries,Satanhasbeentransformedintoamorethreatening figure:heisseenasafrightfulexteriorentity(agreatbeast/dragon)waitingforsinnersinHell foreternaltorments;butalsoascapabletoinvadethebodyofhumanBeing(especiallyof women)inordertospurthemtosin 2. As a result, at the end of the Middle Ages the witchcraft's processes began. The clergymenwereconvincedoftheexistenceofdiabolicsectsofwitches.Thewomenbodywas seenasthehomeoftheDevil,sexualitywasthereforetotally forbiddenoutsidemarriage 3. TheseconceptionsweregoingtolastuntiltheEnlightenment(andthewitchraftprocessesin westernEuropestoppedaboutthemiddleofthe18thcentury). However the witchcraft's processes do not fit our study as they do not enter our definitionofsatanism.Infact,wefindtheoriginsofmodernsatanisminEuropeduringthe 17thand18thcentury. The 17 th and 18 th centuries : Someelementsappearedatthattime,forexampleindescriptionsofSabbatorinlate demoniacpossession'sprosecutions,thatweregoingtohaveaninfluenceafewcenturieslater duringthefirstcasesof"real"Satanism.AsanexampleinFranceduringthe17 th centuryin casesofpossessions:somewerethoughttohavebeeninducedbyathird:aSatanist.Butmore interesting: in some cases, people who were possessed (usually young women) 4 revealed descriptions of masses celebrated by a sorcerer and into which the catholic mass was parodied:withusesofeucharistichostinsexualpractices. Ifsometheologistsandhistoriansdoubtabouttherealityoftheseaccusations,these practices seem really to have existed in another case, "the first real trial of Satanism" accordingtoIntrovigne:thecaseofCatherineLaVoisin,stillinFrance,atthecourtofthe kingLouisXIV.Accordingtothearchivesofthelaicpoliceoftheking,whosebosswasthe prefectNicolasdelaReynie,thebourgeoiseCatherine LaVoisin,who keptashopinthe suburbofParis(rueBeauregard)whichofficiallysoldcosmeticsanddiverseremedies,wasin fact the leader of a real satanic organization governed by women. According to thorough searches,manytestimoniesandalonginquiry:inhershopshesoldalsopoisons,eucharistic hosts,stoleninchurchesbyGuibourg,apriestandagreatcompliceofLaVoisin,andalso proceededtoabortions.LaVoisinandGuibourgalsoorganizedblackmasses(thisiswhere the term comes from), that were ordered by nobles, especially women from the court who expectedtogaintheking's(oranimportantcharacterofthecourt)favorwiththehelpofthe Devil.ThepolicefoundinrueBeauregard,ablackchapelandacrematorywhichcontained theremainsofchildren'sbones;LaVoisinconfessedthatduringtheirblackmassestheyhad carried out approximately 2000 children's sacrifices. But sometimes, according to witnesses, living children were sacrificed to Satan (these children hadbeenkidnappedorevenboughtfrom poor families, hence nobody would look for them). The inquiry also mentions the use of humanfatformakingcandlesusedduringtheritual(thefatwasgivento LaVoisinby an executioner),andrevealssomedetailsoftheblackmass:awomanlaiddownnakedandwas usedasanaltar,the(satanic)priestinsertedaneucharistichostintohervaginaandthenhad sexualrelationswithher.Theclientsometimeshadtodrink(atthechalice)amixofsperm andfemininesexualsecretions(sometimemenstrualbloodoftheclientwasadded).Finally thepriest(oftentlyGuibourg)offeredthechildor the foetus (in sacrifice) to the Devil and imploredhimtorealizetheclient'swishes. The inquiry led to the apprehension of 319 people, La Voisin and 35 others were executedin1680,thenoblesweresetfree,someotherswerecondemnedtoexileortoprison for life. The organisation was destroyed by the police. The motivation of La Voisin and Guibourgwassimplymoney,astheyconfessed.Andhereisthedifferencebetweenthecase ofLaVoisinandtheposteriorsatanicorganisations 1. The 19 th century, the Romantic Movement, Huysmans : Although the begining of the century sawwhatIntrovignecalls "an epidemic disease of antisatanists" 2 (with writers such as Mirville, Bizouard, who denounced plots of Satanists, behind spiritistic organizations and (in Bizouard's books 3) even accused the Freemasons and the Mormons of Satanism e.g.), during the 19 th century in France, many writers were attracted by the figure of Satan. Attheendofthe17 th centurySatanbecamea subject for literature. That had been possible, according to Muchembled, once Satan's powers began to be discredited. The doubts had been inspired by the 17 th century's philophers,but the real change occured at the endofandjustaftertheFrenchRevolution 4. In1796,ashewasonlynineteenyears old,MatthewGregoryLewiswroteTheMonk , inwhichtheDevilisdescribedasanextremelybeautifulyoungman,whoisnaked,wearsa star on the forehead, two scorched wings on his back and smells of a delightful perfum. During the same period the painter William Blake also represented Satan as a young and beautifulangel,swervingfromtheusualchristian representation. Lewis' magnificent Satan

11 wasattheoriginof atrendofartistswhotookpart in the Romantic Movement and that picturedtheDevilasabeautifulfallenangelwhoisrevoltedagainstanunfairGod 1. AnotherforerunneroftheRomantic Movement in its conception of Satan was the british poet John Milton. His famous The Paradise Lost (1667) is an epic poem aboutthefallofSatanandthetemptationof Eve. The Romantics were fascinated by Milton's description of Satan, who is depicted as a proud and noble angel who prefers "to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven" .Miltonvindicatedindeedrebellion and announced the romantic representation ofSatan. The romantic british poet Byron (17881824), inspired by Milton, pictured Lucifer as the stereotype of Rebelion ; Byron's Devil is indeed described as a beautiful fallen angel who is revolted againstanunfairandterribleGod. AlongwithByron,theentireenglish literaturehasbeenmarkedbythefigureofSatanasaproud,powerful,beautiful,fallen,sad andcursedangel.ThefrenchliteraturetriedtofollowtheenglishinthattrendbutinFrance thephenomenondidnotgetasmuch"success",evenwithauthorssuchasAlfreddeVigny, GeorgeSand,ThéophileGautier,LamennaisandVictorHugo.SandforexamplesawSatanas theGodofthepoorandtheweakandasthearchangeloflegitimaterevolt 2. However in France, the romantic vision of Lucifer was not going to have a great posterity,asinthemiddleofthecenturythemythhadlostallcoherence 3. AtthattimeAlphonseLouisConstantbegantopublishbooksunderthepseudonym Éliphas Lévi .HisstylewasverydifferentfromtheRomanticMovement,buthealsodepicted aLuciferunfairlycondemnedbyGod,andmadehimthesymbolofrevoltandfreedom.But hisvisionofSatanevolvedandthenheimaginedHim as a positive spiritual force. Lévi's booksweremainlyaboutoccultismandmagic,andevenifhewasdespisedbytheleadersof esotericsocietieshereceivedalotofsuccessamongthe"common"public,andinthelast decades of the century occultism and spiritism had become fashionable. Plenty of authors were interested in these themes: Stanislas de Guaïta, Papus, Mallarmé, Mendès, Huysmans...etc. JorisKarl Huysmans published in 1890 the novel Làbas into which he described Satanismasitwasathistime,includingablackmass.Themaincharacter,Durtal,isledby Hyacinthe Chantelouve to an ancient convent where women from the high society are gatheringtogetherwithhomosexuals:

On lui avait relevé la tête, allongé le corps et des plis peints aux joues muaient sa face douloureuse en une gueule tordue par un rire ignoble. Il était nu, et à la place du linge qui ceignait ses flancs, l'immondice en émoi de l'homme surgissait d'un paquet de crins." 1 ThenDurtalcomplainsaboutthehorriblesmelloftheroomandatthesametimethe defrockedpriestDocrewalkedin,andtheceremonybegins: "Précédé de deux enfants de choeur, coiffé d'un bonnet écarlate sur lequel se dressaient deux cornes de bisons rouges, le chanoine entra. (...) Il s'inclina solennellement devant l'autel, monta les gradins, et commença sa messe. Durtal vit alors qu'il était, sous les habits du sacrifice, nu. (...) Docre faisait les génuflexions, les inclination médiocres ou profondes, spécifiées par le rituel.." 2

DocrebeginshisspeechinhonorofSatan,glorifyingcrimeandsins: "Maître des Esclandres, Dispensateur des bienfaits du crime, Intendant des somptueux péchés et des grands vices, Satan, c'est toi que nous adorons, Dieu logique, Dieu juste! (...) Soutien du Pauvre exaspéré, Cordial des vaincus, c'est toi qui les doues de l'hypocrisie, de l'ingratitude, de l'orgueil, afin qu'ils se puissent défendre contre les attaques des enfants de Dieu, des Riches! (...) Maître, tes fidèles servants à genoux t'implorent. Ils te supplient de leur assurer l'allégresse de ces délectables forfaits que la justice ignore ; ils te supplient d'aider aux maléfices dont les traces inconnues déroutent la raison de l'homme; (...) ils te demandent enfin, gloire, richesse, puissance, à toi, le Roi des déshérités, le Fils que chassa l'inexorable Père!" 3 ThenDocrecontinueshisdiscourseinsultingJesusChrist: "Et toi, toi qu'en ma qualité de prêtre, je force, que tu le veuilles ou non, à descendre dans cette hostie, à t'incarner dans ce pain, Jésus, Artisans des supercheries, Voleur d'affection! (...) Tu as failli à tes engagements, menti à tes promesses; des siècles ont sangloté, en t'attendant, Dieu fuyard, Dieu muet! (...) Nous voudrions taper sur tes clous, appuyer sur tes épines, t'amener le sang douloureux au bord de tes plaies sèches! (...) Nazaréen maudit, Roi fainéant, Dieu lâche! -Amen », crièrent les voix cristallines des enfants de choeur." There begins an horrible orgy between all people participating to the mass (men, women,children...etc.). Huysman'ssourceswere,accordingtosomeofhisfriends,apersonalexperienceofa blackmass(butsomeotherfriendsofhisdoubtedthat Huysmans really witnessed such a mass),theresearchofhisfriendJulesBois,whomadeinquiriesintheoccultismand"satanic" underworld, and finally the archives of two priests condemned for heresy by the Vatican: VintrasandBoullan.MassimoIntrovignethinksalsothatHuysmansmighthaveconsultedthe archivesconcerningLaVoisin.

13 TheexistenceofsatanicblackmassatthetimeofHuysmansisnotalwaysacceptedas true.ButwhatissureisthatHuysmans'descriptionsweregoingtobeusedasamodelfor satanicblackmassesduringthefollowingcentury. AfterthisinfatuationforSatanism,asareaction,revivedaperiodofantisatanism,with thepublicationofahugebookfromawritercalledDrBataille:LeDiableauXIX esiècle and afewbooksfromawritercalledLeoTaxilalsoaboutSatanism 1.Theybothdescribedahuge organizationofmondialSatanism:thePalladism,whichwassupposedlydirectlygovernedby SatanhimselfandwhoseheadquarterswaslocatedinCharleston(US).Thehumanleaderof theorganizationwassupposedlyAlbertPike(whowasactuallyanimportantMason,butnota Satanist...).SupposedlywastheorganizationbehindtheFreemasonry,theMormons...etc. The case of Leo Taxil and Dr Bataille (who in factwasjustanotherpseudonymof Taxil)endedwiththeconfessionofTaxilin1897:headmittedthathehadinventedthewhole storyaboutPalladismandAlbertPike.Thiscasewashoweverabigshock,becausepublic opinionandapartofthecatholicchurchhadbeguntobelieveinTaxil'sfalserevelations. On the other hand, from a general point of view, the end of the century saw the beginningofwhatcouldbecalled"interiorization"oftheimageoftheDevil 2.Thisprocess beganatthesameperiodasSciencebecameinterestedintheexplorationofthesubject,and conjointly,thesubconscious.ThistendencybecomesobviousinnovelssuchasThePictureof Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and especially Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by RobertLouis Stevenson,inwhichheinvestigatesthehumanmindandcomestoconcludethataneviland goodexistineveryone.Here,theprimordialdualismofgoodandevilleavesthecosmosto invadethemindofthesubject. For some authors, the Devil is the (unconscious) symbolization by the subject of desiresandcompulsionscomingfromhisunconsciousthatarerepelledanddiabolizedbyhis consciousmindanditsmorallaws(God).ItisthecaseforexampleofafollowerofFreud, Ernest Jones, who published in New York in 1911 Nightmares, Witches, and Devils . As expected,onefindstheoriginofthisconceptioninFreud'sworks 3: "Pour nous, les démons sont des désirs mauvais, réprouvés, découlant d'impulsions repoussées, refoulées. Nous écartons simplement la projection que le Moyen Âge avait faite de ces créations psychiques dans le monde extérieur; nous les laissons naître dans la vie intérieur des malades où elles résident." 4 However this process of "interiorization" of the Devil does not mean that the traditional vision of Satan disappeared. Satan, during the 20 th century, has taken many different forms. This, according to Muchembled, went along with the end of the devoted attachmenttochristiandogmatismandwiththereturnofancienttraditions. ModernSatanismappearedatthebeginningofthe20thcentury.Aswewillsee,these sectsemphasized(stilltoday)theimportanceofthefulfillmentoftheselfandegoism,and reject(ed)allChristianmoraldogmas.

14 The 20 th century and Aleister Crowley : An important character of the first half of the 20th century was Aleister Crowley. CrowleyinfactwasnotarealSatanist,hewasamagicianandanatheist,buthischaracter and doctrine are important in our study, because he has had a great influence on modern magicandsatanicmovements.IfanexplanationofCrowley'swholetheorywouldbefartoo longforthispresentstudy,itisneverthelessnecessarytopayattentiontosomepointsofhis doctrineinordertorelatethemlatertothetheoriesofLaVey. FirstofallonemustnoticethatCrowleywasanatheist.HedeclaredinhisLiberOZ The Thelemic declaration of rights of Man : "there is no other god than man" . Thus he explainedinhiscommentaryontheBookoftheLaw 1,thatthespiritshebelievedinandhe invokedwerenotrealindependant"beings",butwerepartsofwhathecalled"thesecretself", which is described by Crowley, who had read Freud, as a concept close to the freudian unconscious. Crowley, who after Freud read also C. G. Jung's theory about the collective unconscious,alsoarguedthatdifferentpeoplecouldseethesamespiritsinthesameway. Somethingalsointerestingistheconceptof"magick" 2ritualsintendedtoinvokethese spirits (called the ritual of invocation), that are in fact unexistant outside the mind of the performer.Theinvocationhereconsiststoidentifywiththespiritinvoked3(usingdifferent manners that we will not develop here). For example a magician who wants to experience great joy will look for a deity " whose nature is Joy. He will find what he requires in Dionysos " 4. Here we must also pay attention to the ultimate goal of rituals according to Crowley:" The Supreme and Complete Ritual is the Invocation of the Holy Guardian Angel "5, toknowthenatureof(andtobethenabletorealize)whathecalledthe"GreatWork"orthe "True Will" 6. He added that " all magical Rituals are particular case of this general principle "7,thatistosaythatthegoalofallritualsisfinallytorealizetheTrueWill. Next,Crowley'sopinionabouttheDevilmaybeinterestingforourstudy.Crowleydid notbelievethatSatanreallyexisted,evenlessdidhebelieveinSatanasHeisdescribedinthe Bible 8,heevendespisedthosewhoworshipedHim(forexampletheSatanistsdescribedin Huysmans's novel Làbas ).HiscriticwasthatworshipingtheDevilfromthe Bible was in some ways to believe in the Bible and therefore he accused the Satanists to be in fact "disguided"Christians. Contrarytothis,Crowleyusedthewords"Lucifer"or"Satan"todesignatethephallus. As opposed to Christianism, Satan also symbolizes the reason of Man, who according to Crowley is God. 15 LetusconcludebysayingthattheinfluenceofCrowleyonsomepointsofLaVey's theoryisevident.Moreoverthesepointsarenotamongthelessimportantones.Forexample, the concept of Crowley's rituals and atheism, slightly modified, will be incorporated in LaVey'smodernsatanictheory. From Crowley to LaVey : DescribingthewayCrowley'sideastravelledbeforetheyreachedLaVeywillmakeus talkaboutsomeofthelastformsofSatanismstillmissinginourlistandwillleadustotalk aboutacharacterwhoplayedaveryimportantroleintheLaVey'sesotericformationandthe genesis of The Church of Satan. This man was actually the link between Crowley and LaVey'sSatanism. AleisterCrowleytravelledtotheUnitedStatesafewtimestoearnsomemoneybut alsotomeetsomeofhisfollowersinCalifornia,whereamancalledWilfredT.Smithhad foundedaThelemic 1Church.In1942CrowleyelectedamancalledJohnWhitesideParsons (aliasJackParsons)tobeattheheadoftheCalifornianChurchinsteadofSmith.Crowleyhad beenimpressedbyParsons'writings. NeverthelessParsonssplitfromCrowleyin1948,andendeavoredtosetuphisown gnostic Church. He was convinced to be the Antichrist and to have got the mission of preparing the coming of the Beast 666. According to Introvigne Parsons was not a real Satanist, neither an atheist magician like Crowley, but he was somewhere inbetween. EffectivelyParsonsinhisgnostictheorybelievedintheTrinityevenifhehatedChristianism, hejusthadhisowninterpretation. Blanche Barton in her biography of her partner Anton LaVey writes that LaVey contacted Jack Parsons at the beginning of the 50 's in order to purchase Crowley's books. LaVeysupposedlycametotheconclusionthatCrowleywas "a druggy poseur whose greatest achievements were as a poet and mountain climber" 2. HoweveritiscertainlynotthroughhisreadingsthatLaVeygotthestrongerinfluence ofCrowley,itisthroughsomebodyfamousinHollywoodforhisanticonformistfilms:the undergroundfilmmakerKennethAnger. Kenneth William Anglemyer (alias Kenneth Anger) was born the 3 rd February of 1927 3.HeplayedasmallroleinMaxReinhardt'sfilm:Lesonged'unenuitd'été whenhewas only four years old. When he was 17 he directed with success his first film: Fireworks , nominatedattheFestivaldeCannes.Atthebeginingofthe50 's ,Angerwhowasfascinatedby magicandoccultism,becameamemberofthegroupofJackParsonsandcarefullystudiedthe works of Aleister Crowley. He went to Sicilia to visit the ruins of the thelemic abbey of CrowleyandmadeafilminspiredbyCrowley:InaugurationofthepleasureDome . Anger wrote also two books on scandals in american movie history entitled Hollywood Babylon (1965)andHollywoodBabylonII (1984). In the 60 's , every friday at midnight, Anger frequented the house number 6114 of California Street in San Francisco. 16 Atthetime,LaVeyheldeveryfridaynightwhathetermed"midnightmagicseminars" onvariousocculttopicssuchasvampires,werewolfs,ghostsandhaunting...etc.Inherbook 1, BlancheBartonexplainsthatLaVeyacquiredhishouseof6114CaliforniaStreetin1956. Sincethebeginningthehouseanditsstrangeoccupantsgotpublicityfromlocalnewpapers, duetothefactthatforexampleLaVeykeptfirstaleopardandthen,afteritsdeath,alionas housepets.LaVeyandhispartnerofthetime,Diane,organizedafewtimesayearsoirees whichgathered "a crowd of influential and eccentric people around LaVey" 2.Atthetime, accordingtoBlancheBarton,LaVeyhadbeenveryinterestedinoccultforaboutonedecade, worked for the SFPD (San Fransisco Police Department) as a "ghost hunter" and therefore hadareputationofaBlackMagician.Intheearly60 's thesesoirees,wherediscussionsdealt withocculttopics,becamepublicseminarswhichwereheldeveryfridaynight.Charginga "moderate fee" atthedoor,Antongavelecturesontopicswehavealreadymentioned. Themostfamouspersonattendingtothe"midnightmagicseminars"wasundoubtedly Kenneth Anger. And it is therefore both Anger and LaVey who decided to form (around 1961)"TheMagicCircle"withtheseminars'regularattendants.TheMagicCirclegathered periodically and separately from the rest of (curious and occasional) attendants, to perfom rituals.AccordingtoMichealAquino,whowasLaVey'sclosestcollaboratoruntil1975,the magic circle took "various activities and operations of formal Black Magic out of the theorical and into the practical" 3.(ItishowevernecessarytoemployAquino'sbookvery carefully, because after 1975, he and LaVey split up, and Aquino founded a rival organization: The Temple of Set. So one should not rely too quickly on his objectivity, especiallywhenhecriticizesLaVey,buthereitseemstherearenoreasonsnottotrusthim.) In her biography Blanche Barton mentions only once Anger's name and never acknowledgeshisinfluenceonLaVey.OntheotherhandshebrieflynarratesAngercinematic career, his travels to Europe in pursuit of Crowley's inheritance, and discloses that Anger "introduced LaVey to Marjorie Cameron, John [Jack] Parsons' widow" 4. However,knowingthatAngerwaspart(themostimportantindividual)ofthe"circle" ofveryclosefriendsaroundLaVey,onecaninferthatAngerhasdefinitelyhadaninfluence upontheshapingoftherituals,whichwouldthenbeincludedintheceremonytheChurchof Satan.

The Church of Satan: Satan for LaVey & LaVey's Satanism VeryfewpeopleinEuropehaveeverheardabouttheChurchofSatan,whichisan Americanphenomenon.OnemaythinkthatadescriptionoftheChurchofSatan'sactivities wouldbeoutofthesubjectofthepresentwork.Onthecontrary,myopinionisthatsucha partisessential,simplytounderstandwhatwearetalkingabout.Thetwofollowingchapters arejustabriefpresentationofLaVey'sactivities:theirgoalisnottorelateeachepisode,but rather to enable the reader to make a general idea of was the Church of Satan. Which is necessarytounderstand LaVey's Satanism . The formation of the Church of Satan : Aswesaidinthepreviouspart,inthe60'sAntonLaVeywas just anexcentricSan Franciscan.AsBartonrelates,LaVeywasborninChicagoin1930,butspenthischildhoodin California where his parents gave him a rather atheistic education. The young LaVey left homeat16toworkinacircus,atfirstasacageboy,butsoon(ashehadatalentformusic sincehisearlychildhooh)asamusician.LaVeyleftthenthecircusandworkedasanorganist in different nightclubs and bars, where he supposedly met the thenunknown Marilyn Monroe,withwhomhehadashortloveaffair.Fewsyearslater,asweknow,hesupposedly workedfortheSFPD(SanFranciscoPoliceDepartment),asaghosthunter,untilthemiddle ofthe60's.Hethenearnedwithhisseminariesand other activities enough money to live properly. Duringthe60'sLaVeyhadindeedgatheredaroundhimofgroupof"followers".Those peoplewereattractedbyLaVey'sphilosophy accordingtoBlancheBartonandotherSatanists (suchasPeterH.Gilmore).ButitseemsratherthatLaVey'ssuccesswascertainlyduetothe tasteforeccentricityandanticonformismwhichwereinvogueatthattime.Inthesecondhalf ofthe20thcenturySanFranciscowasindeedthecenterofamericancounterculture:itwasthe pointofconvergencefortheBeatMovementwriters,Hippies,rockmusicians,differentother artistsandparticularlyfortheGay Liberationmovement.ThesuccessofLaVey'smidnight seminariesandtheirunconventionaltopics,isthennotsurprising. LaVey Barton claims that people in the Magic Circle "comprised an array of professions and pursuits: (...)artists, attorneys, doctors, writers, and law enforcement officers" .Shemainlyinsistsononemember:Dr.CecilNixonandhisinfluenceuponLaVey. Nixon(whoismainlyknownforhisinventions,e.g.theautomatonIsis)andLaVeyshareda commontasteformusic,hypnotismandmagic.LaVey attended Nixon's soirees, where he metmusicians,actressesandvariousartists.Nixon'shome'sdecorationscertainlytouchedthe imaginationof LaVey whenhebedeckedhis BlackHouse. Nevertheless Nixon was much olderthanLaVey,anddiedin1962whenhewas82yearsold 1.

18 TheMagicCirclewasaimedtoperformritualsofblackmagic,LaVeypretendedthat owingtotheseritualsthepeoplefromthemagiccircleobtainedresultssuchas "professional advances, unexpected rewards, monetary gains, sexual or romantic satisfaction, or the elimination of certain enemies" .Theycontinuedtheiractivitiesuntil1966... In1966, "on the last night of April—Walpurgisnacht, the most important festival of the believers in witchcraft—LaVey shaved his head in the tradition of ancient executioners and announced the formation of the Church of Satan" 1.Thefirst"official"organizationdedicated totheDevil. LaVeydeclared "1966 year One, Anno Satanas, the first year of the Age of Satan" . TheMagicCircleturnedintothecoreofthisneworganization. The Church of Satan's chronicle : TheceremonytookplaceintheBlackHouseandwasratheraprivateone.Butwithin ashorttime,thepressofCaliforniawasinterested and a few articles about the Church of Satanwerepublished.Thejournalistswereinterestedintheblasphemyconstitutedbythefirst ChurchofSatan(evenitsnamewasaBlasphemy),LaVey'sBlackHouseandhishousepet: thenubianlionTogare,buttheywerewonderingwhetheritwasallajokeorwhethertheyhad totakehimseriously. LaVey received the Church's ceremonies every Friday night in the parlour of his House(thechamberthathadpreviouslybeenusedfor the rituals of the Magic Circle and LaVey'sseminaries).Duringthefirstyear,ritualsmainlyconsistedofparodiesofthecatholic massdirectlyinspiredbythedescriptionofHuysmans'sLàbas . InOctoberofthesameyear,theChurchofSatanconverteditsmostfamousmember, the actress Jayne Mansfield, both LaVey and Mansfield subsequently received a lot of publicity. Despite the fact that some detractors have tried to minimize the involvement of JayneMansfieldwiththeChurchofSatan,itseemsratherthatMansfieldreallyconvertedto Satanism. On February the first, 1967, Anton LaVey was askedtoperform a satanic wedding ceremony:thejournalistJohnRaymondandJudithCase(heiressofawealthy family from NewYork)wantedAntontoconsecratetheirunioninthenameofSatan.AsRaymondand hisbridewerefiguresinthesociety,ahugeamountofjournalistscrowdedintheBlackHouse fortheceremony.FromthiseventtheChurchofSatangotalotofpublicityfromthemedia, thepressbegantocallLaVeythe Black Pope . On May the 23rd of the same year, LaVey performed the first satanic baptism: he "baptized"inthenameofSatanhisthreeyearoldgirlZeenainfrontofdozensofjournalists. InDecember,LaVeyandAngerperformedthefirstsatanicfuneral,ofEdwardOlsen, aNavyofficer.HeandhiswifeweremembersoftheChurchofSatanandsheassertedthat herhusbandwishedhisfuneraltobesatanic. 19 evilinfluenceuponher.BobbyBeausoleilwasthefirstmemberoftheFamilyarrested(for themurderGaryHinman),hewasalsoaverygoodfriendofKennethAngerandhadeven lived in LaVey's Black House for a while a few years before the murders. LaVey was neverthelessneverincriminated,hehadnodirectinvolvementwiththemurdersnoreitherhas hissocalledinfluenceeverbeenproved. In1969,LaVeypublishedhisfirstbook,TheSatanicBible ,whichhasneverbeenout ofprintandhassoldover600'000copiesworldwide.TheSatanicBible wasfollowedin1971 byTheCompleatWitches,orwhattodowhenvirtue fails ,abookaboutseduction,andin 1972 by The Satanic Rituals , which states the principle of rituals, but which does not faithfullydescribetheritualsastheywerepractisedwithinthesatanicritualchambers 1. The centre of the administration was the Black House,andmostoftheritualstook placethereuntil1972.However,atthattimeLaVeystoppedopeninghishouseforpublic rituals,becausehewasthenafraidforhisfamily.Thehouseindeedhadbeenthetargetofa few attacks from people opposed to the satanic Church. LaVey let people know (it was certainly untrue) that most of time he was notin San Francisco. At this point the satanic ritualscametobeheldinthe Grottos .ThefirstGrottoswerefoundedaround1970,theywere gathering points for Satanists and representatives of the central power (the Black House). AboutadozenofGrottosweredisseminatedaroundtheworld,butmainlyinUS.Eachone hadachiefandtheSatanistsfrequentingtheGrottoswererankedinfivedegrees,wheresome corresponded to Catholic "ranks". Besides, the organization was said to be directed by a councilofnine: the Order of the Trapezoid ,butitseemsratherthatLaVeyandhispartner Diane,gatheredallthepower. AccordingtoMichaelA.Aquino,whowasLaVey'srighthandman,butwhoisnow anopponentstotheChurchofSatan,thenumberofpeopleattendingthesatanicritualsinany wasapproximatelyfivehundred.ButnoteverymemberoftheChurchattendedtothe ceremoniesandonebecame(thisisstillvalidtoday)amember(forlife)whenhehadpaidan adhesion'sfee.So,tothecontraryofAquino,Bartonclaimsinherbookthatin1969more thantenthousandpeoplehadpaidtheiradhesion'sfee. However,LaVeystillfacedsomeproblems:onegrotto(inDayton)gotinvolvedwith anaffairoftraffickingdrugsanditschiefwasarrested,andthen"excommunicated".Some otherGrottosweresuppressedbecauseofmoney'sproblems.SoLaVeyin1975dissolvedthe Grotto'ssystemandturnedtheChurchofSatanintoaquasiundergroundorganization,whose memberscouldpractiseSatanismontheirownandcontact LaVey for further information. ThegradeswithintheChurchweregivenregardingtofinancialparticipation,orto"ennoble" someone(e.g.therockstarMarilynMansonwasgiventhetitleofsatanicreverendin1994). By doing this he broke up with his righthand man Michael A. Aquino, who deemed the dissolution as a suicide. Aquino then has always been one of the strongest adversaries of LaVey,hefoundedin1975theTempleofSet(opposedtotheChurchofSatan)andapartof theChurchofSatan'smembersandrepresentativesfollowedhim.HereuponAquinoclaimed (andstilldoes)thatthiseventmarkedtheendoftheChurchofSatan.Effectivelyonedidnot hearmuchfromLaVeyandhisorganizationforawhile,butAquino'sorganizationhadno moresuccess. Inthe80's(duringthesatanicpanic 2),theChurchofSatanwasalmostinvisible.But the90's(therumorsofthesatanicconspiracyhadthenbeguntofadeaway)announcedthe returnofthe"real"satanicmovements 3. 20 toanotherfigureoftheChurch:PeterH.Gilmore.BartonpublishedabiographyofLaVeyin 1990,andshegavebirthtoLaVey'sfirstsonin1993:SatanXerxesCarnackiLaVey. LaVey published another book in 1992: The Devil's Notebook , with a preface by KennethAnger,whichisacollectionofessaysandshortstories. LaVeywaswritingSatanSpeaks ,agatheringofessaysondifferentissues,whenhe diedinOctoberthe31 th (),1997inSanFranciscofromheartdisease. AfteraconflictbetweenKarlaLaVey,hisoldestdaughterandBlancheBarton,Karla receivedtherightsonLaVey'sworksandBartoninheritedtheChurchofSatanandbecame HighPriestess.The BlackHousewasdestroyedin2001,eveniftheChurchofSatanhad protested, because LaVey had had to sell it at the end of his life, for he had pecuniary problems.Afriendofhishadboughtthehouseandlentittohimuntilhisdeath,butrefused togiveittoLaVey'ssuccessors,whohadnotenoughmoneytobuyit. In2002,BartonappointedPeterH.GilmoreasHighPriest,arolehehasplayeduntil today. LaVey's conceiption of Satan and Satanism, The Satanic Bible : WhetherornottheChurchofSatanwasatthebeginningjustanothercreationofa groupofeccentricSanFranciscans,afterafewyearsitwasstillalive.Moreandmore,the Church of Satan lost its image of an entertaining organization and presented itself as an organizationwithaphilosophyandan"ethic": "Someone paid me a great compliment long ago" LaVey recalled, "when he said, about me: 'He's no fun any more'. That's when I knew I was getting somewhere. This was when the Church was two or three years old and I realized people were beginning to regard us as more than just fun and games." 2 LaVeyhadunderstoodthathisChurchcouldbemorethanjust"funandgames",and thathecouldgetnotorietythatway.So,asitmatured,theChurchofSatanwasbecoming moreandmore"serious".Nowadays,eveniftheChurchofSatan'swebsiteandmagazinegive information on events on places like bars, clubs, etc., it especially emphasizes the satanic philosophy.Itisnomoreaplacejust"togotohavefun",butitisanorganizationwhosegoal istopromoteasortof"philosophy". ThereforethischapterwilldealwithLaVey'sthought,andbrieflywiththeprinciple andfunctionsofrituals. —————— "What nearly everybody in my life (...) had misunderstood about Satanism was that it is not about ritual sacrifices, digging up graves and worshipping the devil. 21 This sentence is interesting in the sense that it shows the general idea of LaVey's philosophy. But also in the sense that Manson only refers to LaVey when he speaks of Satanism.WewillseetheinfluenceLaVeyhashadon modern Satanism in the following chapter;firstwewillhavealookonhisconceptionoftheDevilandon"his"Satanism. LaVeyclaimedtohavewrittentheSatanicBibleinordertosupplyinformationabout thesatanicphilosophyandethictoalargerpublicthanonlytheChurch'smembers.Butin fact,theideaofaSatanicBiblecamefromaneditor,anditseemedthatitsfirstgoalwasto get publicity for the organization. So LaVey gathered small essays he had written about differentissuesonSatanism,addedanintroduction,onepartaboutmagicandritualandthe EnochianKeys.Thusthebookiscomposedoffourparts:thebookof Satan,thebookof Lucifer, the book of Belial and the book of Leviathan (the four crown princes of Hell accordingtoLaVey).TheBooksofSatanandLuciferexposethephilosophyandthebooksof BelialandLeviathanexplaintheprinciplesofmagicandrituals.IntheBookofSatan,Satan himselfseemstohavethefloor. Itishowever never mentioned that the words have been somehow inspired by a supernatural force: they could come from LaVey. The Book of Lucifer,whichcontains12chaptersondifferentissues(likeSatanicSex,ortheBlackMass), isinfacttheassemblageoftherainbowsheets(essays). Attheverybeginningofthebook,LaVeyaffirmsthatwithinthisbookthereaderwill findtrueblackmagic.HeclaimstohavewrittenTheSatanicBible "because, with very few exceptions, every tract and paper, every 'secret' grimoire, all the 'great works' on the subject of magic, are nothing more than sanctimonious fraud—guilt ridden ramblings and esoteric gibberish by chroniclers of magical lore unable or unwilling to present an objective view of the subject." 1 LaVeyalsoclaimsthatTheSatanicBible containstherealsatanicthought,asit waspractisedbysomecharactersinhistory.Figureslikethe20thcentury'sarmstraderBasil Zaharofforthe18thcentury'soccultistCagliostro.Zaharoffwasanarmmerchant,whosold weaponsintheBoerWar,JapaneseRussianWarandWorldWarI.Zaharoffwasanexpertof corruption,andoftensoldarmstobothsidesina war. Cagliostro was an Italian occultist freemasonandcharlatan.Heclaimedtobeafewthousandyearsold,tobeabletoseethe dead, and he sold potions that supposedly prolonged one's life. He became famous as a magicianinParisandlivedwealthily untilhis arrest in Rome by the Inquisition in 1789. These two characters, according to LaVey, were true black magicians, and practised real Satanism(withoutcallingitSatanism).EffectivelyasLaVeywouldsay,theywerepartofan elite and filled their desires, mainly because of their capacity to manipulate and to use unconventionalandreprehensiblemethodstoreachtheirgoal. LaVey indeed claimed that true Satanism was practised by people from the elite everywhereintheworldandthathehadhimselfwrittenTheSatanicBible becauseotherwise, "someone maybe less qualified would have done it" 2. One can observe here that LaVey claimsthatSatanismisaphilosophythatdealswithMan'snature(wewilldevelopthisaspect later, when we will be describing his ideas). Satanists are then an alien elite who live accordinglytotheirnature(theyareaneliteinthatsense). For these reasons, LaVey does not claim in The Satanic Bible to have created Satanism (or a new Satanism), but claims to have codified a preexistent way of living (accordingMan'snature)intoa"philosophy". This philosophy as we are going to see now is a philosophy of "objective subjectivity" 3,whichrejectstheexistenceofGod:foraSatanistthereisnootherGodthanthe Satanisthimself. 1LaVey, The Satanic Bible , op. cit. 2) Satan represents vital existence, instead of spiritual pipe dreams!

3) Satan represents undefiled wisdom, instead of hypocritical self-deceit!

4) Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it, instead of love wasted on ingrates!

5) Satan represents vengeance, instead of turning the other cheek!

6) Satan represents responsibility to the responsible, instead of concern in psychic vampires!

7) Satan represents Man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his "divine spiritual and intellectual development," have become the most animal of all!

8) Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!

9) Satan has been the best friend the church has ever had, as he kept it in business all these years!" LaVeyexplainsthebasicprinciplesofhisphilosophybydescribingacharacterthat endorses all its main aspects. This character is Satan. There, one could question: "is the associationofSatanwithhisphilosophycoherent?"Butinmyopinionthisquestionisnot relevant,inthesensethatitsuggeststhatafixedanddogmaticrepresentationofSatanexists. AndaswesawinPartI(excepttheChristianrepresentation),Sataninhistorydonnedmany formsandhaddifferentsymbolismsdependingontheplaceandtheperiod.Abetterquestion inmyopinionwouldbe:"whydidLaVeychooseSatantorepresenthisphilosophy,andso howdidLaVeyfigureHim?"Andthenitwouldbepossibletocomparethisrepresentation withothersthatwehaveseeninPartI. Inordertoanswerthesequestions,Iwillfirstbriefly present LaVey's "ethic", and thenIwillfocusonthecharacterofSatan,Hisnatureandsymbolism. LaVey's Satanism denies the existence of any God. For him, Man is the result of evolution, and therefore Man has a carnal nature. And effectively what LaVey advocates coincideswiththisdefinition.AsManisjustanotheranimalandlivesonlyhereandnow(on earth),LaVeyvindicatesegoismandhedonism. ThefirststatementsummarizesLaVey's"ethic": "indulgence instead of abstinence" . That is to say the choice to be either faithfultoonepersonortohavemanypartners.Moreover,LaVey "encourages any forms of sexual expressions you may desire, so long as it hurts no one." 2 Beside this, LaVey also advocates the law of the jungle, (or Social Darwinism): "death to the weakling, wealth to the strong" 3, and" vengeance, instead of turning the other cheek!" InadditiontotheSatanicBible,LaVeypublishedinthelate80's The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth , The Nine Satanic Sins and The Pentagonal Revisionism: a five points program 4. The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth arekindsofSatanicmoralcodes. The Nine Satanic Sins present the kinds of behaviour which a Satanist scorns the most and should absolutelynotadopt.Howeverthesetwowritingsseemtobeincontradictionwith,oratleast mitigate the principle of Social Darwinism. The Pentagonal Revisionism was written to expressclearlythe"concrete"goalsoftheChurchofSatan. Actually,evenifasPeterGilmoresaid,LaVey" acknowledges his own faculties and understanding of human beings to synthetize the Satanic Bible" 5,healsorecognizesthathis SatanicphilosophyhasbeenmostlyinfluencedbythephilosophyofAynRand(19051982), eveniftheyhadprobablynevermet.RandwasaRussianbornAmericanwriter.Fewofher novelssuchas The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged werebestsellers.Hernovels'aimwasto present her philosophy: Objectivism, which is an extreme individualistic philosophy that vindicatescapitalismandegoismandscornssuchnotionsasaltruismandsacrificesforthe commongood.Randthuselevatedthepursuitofselfinteresttotheroleoffirstprinciple 6. BesideRand,LaVeyacknowledgestheworkofNietzsche as a source of influence (particularly his concept of the superhuman ), and also Ragnar Redbeard's work Might is Right (RagnarRedbeardwasthepseudonymoftheNewZealanderArthurDesmond).This bookis,accordingtoMichaelA.Aquino, "an obscure, turn-of-the-century political tract" 7 whichvindicatesSocialDarwinism.Until1987,itwasnotdiscoveredthatTheBookofSatan wasinfactjustaplagiarismofasectionofMightisRight (LaVeyhasneveracknowledged hissources):LaVeyhadjustwithdrawnracialismallusionsandaddeddiabolicalreferences ofhisown. However,noneoftheseauthorswasparticularlyinterestedinthefigureofSatan. NowthatwehaveanideaofLaVey's"philosophy",wecanaskourselves,whyis Satanassociatedwithsuch"humanistic"ideas? Firstofall,wemustknowwhatisthenatureofSatanaccordingtoLaVey.Themain adversaryofLaVey,MichaelAquino,pretendsthatLaVeyatthebeginningoftheChurchof SatanbelievedintherealexistenceoftheDevil(asanexteriorbeing),butsuddenlychanged hisopinionaboutthenatureofSatanin1975,atthe time of the schism: "As this history should make abundantly clear, there is no question of Anton LaVey's convictions concerning his literal High Priesthood [andthereforenodoubtsabouttheexistenceofSatan] during the 1966-1975 period" 8. ToprovehisclaimhepresentstestimoniesofpeoplethatknewLaVey atthetime,whichseemcredible,butarenoproof.

24 TodaySatanistsarestilldividedbytheirconceptionofSatan:someholdSatanasa symboloffreedom(astheChurchofSatandoestoday),butsomeothersthinkSatanexists (eveniftheydon'tobligatorilypictureHimasHeisdefinedbytheChristians) 1.Nonetheless, today,theChurchofSatan(andespeciallyitsnewHighPriest,PeterGilmore)insistsonthe factthatSatanisjustasymbolofthe "superior" and an "accomplished" Man, present in everySatanistindividual.ThissymbolismofSatan,aswewillsee,seemscoherentwithwhat LaVeyexposesinTheSatanicBible . InTheSatanicBible ,Satanendorsessomecharacteristics,whichIwilltrytooutline thereandtrytolinkwithcurrents,authors..etc.whichwesawinPartI. AswesawGoddoesnotexistaccordingtoLaVey,and Man has a carnal nature. Therefore,SatanisthesymbolofoppositionagainstmostofChristiandogmas,astheyare falsehoods.Satanrepresentsalsoallthesenaturalneeds.Satanherebecomesapositiveforce, or motivation, which is present in each individual, but which is repressed in many (individuals)bytheirreligious(Christian)"morality". ItisfirstinterestingtonoticeherethatSatanisnomoredepictedasonlypureevil,as He had been in the classical Christian representation. Some journalists and academics attacked LaVey on this point, asking why LaVey called his philosophy "Satanism". For exampleJ.B.RusselinhisgreatstudyofSatanismstatesthatLaVey'sconceptionofSatan (notaspureevil)iscontradictoryandthereforethatmodernSatanismisacontradictionin itself.However,aswesawinPartI,Sataninthemoderntimessuggestsmuchmorethan only pure evil. Actually, this representation of a positive Satan looks like the Romantic symbolism.MoreoverthesimilaritiesbetweenLaVey'srepresentationandtheRomanticone becomesevenmoreevidentwhenwelookonsomeotheraspectsofthefigureofSatan,for example "rebellion". Effectively, for LaVey the Devil represents rebellion and freedom againstthe "morality"ofChristianestablishment. Thisisobviouswithinthe Nine Satanic Statements :allofthembeginwiththeword Satan ,whoisassociatedwithoneofHisso called characteristics. In many statements, Satan's characteristic is then set off against its "Christian" counterpart (e.g. "indulgence instead of abstinence" and "vengeance instead of turning the other cheek" ). This opposition to God and to the constraints of Christian establishment,isnotunliketheRomanticdescriptionofanAngelwhoisrevoltedagainstan unfairGod.However,onemustnoticethefundamentaldistinctionsbetweentheRomantic Movement and LaVey on the subject of Satan: LaVey does not believe in an exterior (Christian)GodandDevil,butonthecontrary hehas "adopted" the vision of an interior Devil. WhatisinterestingisthatLaVeyheretakesoneofFreud'sdefinitionsofSatanthat wesawinPartI: "Pour nous, les démons sont des désirs mauvais, réprouvés, découlant d'impulsions repoussées, refoulées". 2

These impulses (or natural needs) are repressed by the Christian morality of the individual(thesuperiorself).ButasforLaVey,Christianityrepresentsfalsehood;thereisno reasontoconsiderthesepulsionsasbad.ThereforeLaVeypretendsthatSatanism "fills the large grey void between religion and psychiatry" 3, in the sense that it is supposedly a religionclosetopsychiatry(closeintheirprocessofsuppressingthesentimentofguiltthat usuallyaccompaniesnaturalimpulses). 1JamesR.Lewis, Who serves Satan? 25 This links with psychiatry, now leads me to underline the resemblance between LaVey'svisionofSatanandCrowley'sideas(aswesawinPartI,theseresemblanceswere certainlyduetotheinfluenceofKennethAngeronLaVey).Itisinterestingtomentionthat Crowleyheldthespiritshecalledforthaspartofhissubconscious("secretself"),whichis notunlikeLaVey'srepresentationofSatan.Moreover,LaVeyherehastakenbackCrowley's argument towards the Satanists who worship the Devil as He is described in the Bible: accusingthoseSataniststobejustChristianindisguise. In the principle and function of rituals, LaVey has been certainly inspired by Crowley.Before Ibegin,IjustwanttomakeclearthatinthisstudyIdonotexaminethe processoftheritual,butjustitsfunctionsandprinciples.Today,PeterH.Gilmoreaffirms thattheritualsdonotimplythe callingforthof supernatural forces, but are only psycho dramaticrepresentations,whosegoalistoreleaseanindividualfromhisemotionaltensions andhisworries.Forexample,theritualoftheBlackMassisaimedtoreleaseanindividual fromhisChristianthoughtsandfeelings.Inthissense the satanic rituals of the Church of Satan look like Crowley's invocation of spirits (which are in fact just part of his subconscious),inordertoreachaparticularstateofmindorstateoffeeling 1. LaVey would have totally agreed with Gilmore's claim that satanic rituals do not imply the invocations of supernatural forces. However, for LaVey, the first definition of magicisslightlydifferent:magicis "the change in situations or events in accordance with one's will, which would, using normally accepted methods, be unchangeable" 2.Andevenif inmanycasesthisjustimpliesaneffortoftheonlyindividual(likethedefinitiongivenby Gilmore),forsomegreatrituals(likedestructionritual)itimpliesthehelpofadarkforce. Thisforcewhich "permeates and motivates the universe" isnotsupernatural,buthasjustnot yetbeenprovenbyscience. Today, some Satanists 3 pretend that this force represented Satan for LaVey; associatingthisforce,withtheforcethatrunswithinallhumanbeings(thatistosaythe carnalnatureofMan). Toconclude,forLaVeySatanisasymbol:HesymbolizestheSatanist,asocalled superiorMan,whoisfreedfromChristianismanditsfalse"morality"anddogmas,accepts that he is basically an animal and so enjoys an hedonistic life on earth ; so Satan also symbolizesselffulfillmentandthereforeegoism;SocialDarwinismisthenaconsequenceof thisegoism.OntheotherhandSatanissometimeassociatedwithamysterious"darkforce" thatisusedinsomemagicrituals. To answer now to the question I asked at the beginning of the chapter: LaVey responsedtothosewhoaskedhimwhyhecalledhisphilosophy Satanism ,thatfinally,forhe hadchosentoembodywhatpeopleusuallycalled Satan ,hewouldtakealsothename. TonoticeanddescribeLaVey's"voluntary"embodimentofSatan,isinmyopinion fundamentaltounderstandSatanism,inthesensethatdoingso he embodied people's fears . 26 LaVey's satanic influence : As we said in the introduction, LaVey's works have influenced much of the new satanicgroupstodayanditisalsoimpossibletoskipthefactthatLaVeyhasbeenaccusedby manytohaveanevilinfluenceuponteenagersthroughhisSatanicBible.SohereIwillbriefly deal with these two important points: LaVey's influence upon other organized groups of Satanists,andhisinfluenceuponteenagersand"savageSatanism". I will first discuss the influence of LaVey on the multiple new organized satanic groups,withthehelpoftwoarticlesbyJamesR.Lewis 1. Actually,LaVeyisattheoriginofthemaincurrentamongthesatanicorganizations. Especially since 1975, but even before, the Church of Satan has frequently endured small schisms.The"separatists"oftenleftTheChurchofSataninordertoformanotherconcurrent organization,withideasslightlydifferentfromLaVey's.Evenifsomeofthemdisappeared quitequicklybecausetheyhadonlysporadicmembers,somesubsisted,andinadditionothers were formed by nonChurchofSatan members. The result is that nowadays there exist multiple(impossibletoknowexactlytheirnumber)smallsatanicorganizations. For his study on modern Satanism, Lewis sent by email a questionnaire of basic questionstoabout140Satanistsfromallhorizons.Itappearedthatmostoftherespondents were Satanists for many years already, which meansthattheyhadadoptedSatanismas "a mature religious option" .Mostoftherespondents(about60%)believedinSataninanon theisticway,thatistosaytheyconsideredHimasymbol.TothequestionofLewis: "How did you become a Satanist?" ,somerespondentssimplysaidthattheyhadreadtheSatanicBible. Moreover, Lewis discovered that modern Satanists quote the Satanic Bible "to legitimate particular positions as well as to de-legitimate the positions of other Satanists". Thatshows theimportanceofLaVey'sinfluenceuponmodernSatanism.AsLewis,wecanalmostsay thatLaVeyfoundeda Satanist Tradition .ThisfactisverysurprisingifweconsiderLaVey's satanicideology: The sociologist Max Weber explained the process of Ideology in terms of legitimation of authority 2. In our case, LaVey legitimates Satanism as a true philosophy pretending it is based on science and reason. And as Lewis explains in his article, today science tends to be given "a level of respect and prestige enjoyed by few other social institutions - to the point where, as a number of observers have pointed out, science has come to be viewed quasi-religiously" .LaVeyusedthisstrategytocriticizespiritualreligionsfrom the "securalist world-viewed derived from natural science" . However,whatisinteresting,is that The Satanic Bible which stands against Christian moral dogmas and which preaches reason,istodaybecomingmoreandmoreareferenceaboutSatanismformostofthenew moderngroupsofSatanists.Inotherwords,TheSatanicBible whichstandsforrationality against dogmas and authoritative scriptures is itself becoming a satanic authoritative scripture!AsifaimingtobeanenemytoChristianity,Satanismunconsciouslyreproduces JudeoChristiancharacteristicandschemesofauthoritativescriptures 3.

27 Todiscussnowabout"savagesatanism",thatistosaySatanismasitispractisedby nonorganizedgroupsofteenagers,IwilluseonceagainIntrovigne'sbook,andabookby DavidFrankfurteraboutrumoursofSatanicConspiracies 1. First of all, in order to have a better understanding of the problem of "savage Satanism",Ihavetotalkaboutthewhatoccuredin America during the 80 's : "the satanic panic",ortherumorsofaninternationalsatanicconspiracy 2. This "satanic panic" was engendered by the story of the "survivors" who pretended that, because of their psychotherapy, they remembered to have been abused during their childhoodbyasectofSatanists.Michelleremembers waspublishedin1980andwasthefirst bookofa"survivor",andmarkedthebeginningofthesatanicpanic.AccordingtoIntrovigne, the satanic panic had been preceded by the movement "anti-sect" , which had taken place during the 70's. The satanic panic that took place in the US can be compared, writes Introvigne,tothewitchcraft'sprocessesattheendoftheMiddlesAges.Onemustnoticethat the "panic" not only seized some religious, but laic psychatrists also believed in the "survivors"stories.Michelleremembers wasjustthefirst"survivors"'storyandwasfollowed bymanyothers.The"survivors"notonlypublishedtheirstoriesintobooks,butalsoappeared onTV'stalkshows,andgavepublicconferencesonthesubject,etc. Some survivors described an enormous (international) underground satanic plot, which performed satanic ritual abuse on children. They supposedly imprisonned young women, the breeders ,whoserolewastoprocreate.Thebabies'birthswerethennotdeclared totheauthority,hencetheycouldbesacrifiedwithoutanybodyknowing. Theproblemforthesurvivorswasthatnoproofcouldbefoundabouttheirclaims,as theysupposedlyrememberedeventsthathadtakenplace 30 yearsbefore. However, in the middle of the 80's, some psychiatrists announced that some children (their patients) complainedaboutsatanicritualabuse,innurseryschoolsorevenintheirownfamily.These casesoftenledtopoliceinquiriesandalawsuit.Bytheendofthe80's,therewerethousands ofcasesofsocalledritualchildabuse.Butthepeopleaccusedwerenevercondemnedandthe existenceofasatanicplothadneverbeenproved.Infact,mostoftenthesechildren,according toIntrovigne,hadbeeninfluencedbytheirpsychiatristswhobelievedinasatanicconspiracy, and so either invented their stories, or in mostof the cases, probably added some satanic elements and practises to real nonsatanic abuses. Introvigne however, mentioned that it mighthavebeen aphantasmforsomepedophilestouse satanic symbols (as described in storiesofsurvivors)inchildabuse. The satanic panic lost its credibilty in 1989, when the CSER (Committee for the ScientificExaminationofReligion)publishedareportthattotallydiscreditedtheexistenceof asatanicconspiracy,anddiscreditedthescientificcompetencesofthepeoplethatbelievedin it. But even if every serious scholars have denied the existence of the conspiracy, the americansocietyhasneverthelessbeenmarkedbytheserumorsandbythedescriptionsofthe Satanistsandtheirrituals. One must here see the difference between the satanic conspiracy and "savage Satanism":theconspiracywassupposedlyanwellorganizedgroupofadultworshippingthe Devil(usuallytheDevilfromtheBible)andabusingandsacrificingchildren.Ontheother hand,"savageSatanism"isaformofSatanismpractisedbyrevoltedteenagers.Theexistence ofsuch(small)groupsisindisputable. LaVeyhashardlyneverbeenaccusedtobepartoftheinternationalconspiracy(during the 80 's , he did what he could to contradict these rumors), but has often been accused to

28 seduceteenagersandincitethemtoviolence.ItisafactthatthereexistsinAmericaandin Europe many groups of teenagers wearing dark clothes, long black hair and makeup and calling themselves Satanists. For Frankfurter, in contemporary EuroAmerican cultures, religiousmoralitycanoftenbeseenas "an oppressive force in everyday life and a rejectable option" ,whiletherealsoexistsa "freedom to develop publicly deviant subcultures" .Toshock, some teenagers adopt radical symbolic clothing, accoutrements and behaviour that suggest morbidness,andformsocalledsatanicgroups.Thoseteenagersthatenactsuchimagesdoso becauseoftheirsocialconditions:usuallythey are marginal, they are "youth conscious of their own deviance in the local community" ,becausetheyexperiencediteitherintheirschool, familyorsexuallife 1. Itisnotsurprisingthatamarginalizedteenagerwhoissearchingforanidentitycould be seduced by Satanism. By becoming a Satanist, he can supposedly gain power and membership to a group that is the elite (as promises LaVey). Introvigne explains that an adolescentgenerallylearnsaboutSatanismbythemediaslikeTV,cinemaandmusic.While cinemacangivethemtasteformorbidnessandhorror,somerockbandsdefinethemselvesas Satanists. These rock bands, not unlike TV, newspapers and especially the internet can providethemwithinformationonorganizedSatanism.Itisthennotdifficultforthemtofind furtherinformationaboutthesatanicideologyontheinternetorbypurchasingLaVey'sbooks (intheUSyoucanfindthemforlessthan$10ineverybigbookstore).Someofthemeven trytoreproduceritualsathomeorincemeteries(those groupsoften gatherincemeteries), oftenwiththeusesofdrugsandsometimeswiththe ceremony degenerating into an orgy. Manytimessuchgroupshavebeenaccusedtocommitactsofvandalism(onchurcheseg.)or even crimes. These crimes have often been imputed to their satanic beliefs (especially by religion),althoughitisalwaysverydifficulttoknowwhetherthemotiveispurely"religious", orwhetheritissomethingelse(duetootherfactorssuchasdrugs'traffic) 2. However, one must admit that LaVey never directly incited to break the law (he invitestorespectthelaw),moreover,mostoftheindividualsorsmallgroupshavenocontact withthe"official"satanicorganizations.Butontheotherhand,psychologicalstudiesabout youth'sSatanismconcludethatLaVey'ssocialDarwinismanddenialofmoralcodescanhave animpactonyoungdisorientedteenagers 3.Introvignealsoaddsthataboutfivethousandsof teenagersinAmericaandaboutthesamenumberinEuropebelongtothesegroups. For Frankfurter,whotriestoanalysethephenomenon,thereisnodoubtthatthese adolescentshearorhaveheardrumoursaboutsatanicconspiracyandwitness(ed)theterrorit canengendertocertainpeople.Andsowhentheyperform"Satanism"inpublic("perform" heremeansbehaveandbedressedinawaythatdenotesSatanism)theyprovokereactionsof fear,disgustandrepulsion.Thesereactionsare "enjoyed by the group as a source of power" (powertobeabletoproducethematwill).Forthebelieversinasatanicconspiracy,those groups and the acts of vandalism and crimes they exceptionally committed confirm the existenceandthedangerousityofasatanicplot. Whatisamazingisthattheteenagersunconsciouslyplaywiththisobsessivefearofa conspiracyandwiththeborderofwhatisacceptableintheirsociety.Theyindeedfeedthe rumoursandsigns "on which the Satanism panic are based" . 29 Frankfurter summaries: "They derive both power and group fulfilment from enacting the starkest cultural notions of evil" 1. The organized satanic movements such as the Church of Satan use the same tool, maybeatalowerscale(LaVeyinvitestorespectthelawandhisformulaforTheChurchof Satanwas9partssocialrespectabilityand1partoutrage),togetrecognition;thatistosayto befearedandrespected.Inaddition,thefactthat LaVey hadbeenaccusedtohave anevil influence,madehimseemevenmorefrightfulintheeyeofpeople.AccordingtoFrankfurter, thestratagemofthesegroupsshowsthatsomepeopleinthesocietyhaveunderstoodthat "the myths have great power, great danger, even an oppressiveness, and that one can play with the symbols, imaginatively and theatrically, if one is willing to accept some ostracism" 2. Anton LaVey: the Father of Lies ? As we saw in the previous chapters, the Church of Satan's first goal today is to promotetheir"philosophy",thattheygrantforserious.Butontheotherside,theChurchof Satancannotbe"reduced"onlytoits"philosophy":theresomethingtheatricalinLaVeyand hisfollowers'behaviorasSatanists,thatcannotbeignoredinourstudy. Throughouthislife,LaVeyhas indeedalwaysbeencloselyconnected to the show business' world. As we saw,whenhewas16LaVeylefthome toworkedinacircus.Thereheformed longtime friendships with clown for example. During this period, he also gotfamiliarwiththe"bigcats". Afterthecircusheworkedasa musician in clubs and bar in San Francisco. In his biography, Blanche Barton relates how LaVey met with Marilyn Monroe who worked as a stripperinthe"Mayans",anightclub in Los Angeles where LaVey worked asamusician.Theysupposedlyhada short relationship and even lived together during a few weeks. However, the journalist Lawrence Wright, who inquiried into LaVey's life,provedthatLaVey

30 propably never met Marilyn Monroe: Marilyn's agent (questionned by Wright) had never heardaboutLaVey;WrightalsoprovedthatinfactneitherLaVeynorMarilyneverworkedin thatnightclubatthattime...etc 1. HoweveritissurethatLaVeyhashad manyrelationshipswithpeoplefromtheshow business. For example Kenneth Anger who, more than being a member of the Church of Satan, even made a film about the Devil: Invocation of my demon brother (1969), into whichLaVeyplayedtheroleofSatan. JayneMansfield'sinvolvementwiththe ChurchofSatanisalsoundeniable.LaVeyand MansfieldkeptintouchuntilherdeathinJune 1967.Herfamebroughtalotofsuccesstothe Church.Aswecanseeonthepicture,LaVey knewhowtoticklethejournalists! The Satanists got also publicity when Polanski's Rosemary's Baby was released in 1968. The movie contains a few allusions to theChurchofSatan:inthemovietheSatanistsdeclare1966asyearoneofthereignofthe Devil, and yelled "Hail Satan". Both areofcourseallusionstotheChurch of Satan. LaVey claimed to have beenrequestedbytheproductorsasa consultant and even to have played the role of Satan 2. It certainly contributed to the success of the ChurchofSatanwiththemedia. Finally we can consider the involvementofSammyDavisJr.and oftherockstarMarilynManson,who were both famous members of the ChurchofSatan.MarilynMansonwas evengiventhetitleofPriestofSatan. Considering LaVey's close connection to the world of the show businessitisnotsurprisingtofindin the rituals and the ceremonies of the ChurchofSatanasortoftheatricalism. During the first years of the Church, LaVey performed "sensational" ceremonies that were aimed to shock andtogetpublicity.

31 Into these, LaVey did not hesitate to put on a desguise: horns, a sword...etc. These ceremonies were parodies of christian ceremonies: LaVey performed a satanicwedding,satanicfunerals,andbaptizedhis little girl, Zeena,inthenameofSatan: "With her soft blond hair and engaging smile, she captivated reporters with the image of such an angelic child being dedicated to the Devil" .Theceremonywasaimedto "glorify her natural instincts and intensify her lust for life" . "Christian's organizations were outraged at the spectacle" asreports Blanche Barton, but "there was little they could do" at thattime 1.

More than just by these ceremonies, the journalists were also attracted by LaVey's unsual way of living. His house for example was famous, because all blackpainted. LaVey also kept a lion as a housepet, Togare. No doubts that it contributed to his reputationofablackmagicianandSatanist.

32 Thus, as LaVey summarized it, the Church of Satan was supposed to shock (moderately) and "smash all concepts of what a church should be. This was a temple of indulgence instead of a temple of abstinence (...). We [especiallyhimself] didn't want it to be an unforgiving, unwelcoming place, but a place where you could go to have fun" 1. But LaVey wasn't probably content about his reputation, and so contributed in his biographiestocreateakindoflegendabouthislife.LaVey'stwobiographies 2haveindeed been revised by LaVey himself; moreover the author of the second one was LaVey's last partner,BlancheBarton!Soofcoursewecannottrusttheirobjectivity. IntoBarton'sbookThesecretlifeofaSatanist ,wecanreadmanysurprisingstories aboutLaVey'slifebeforethecreationoftheChurchofSatan,andsomeanecdotesabouthis lifeulteriorly.ForexampleBartonclaimsthatthenewbornLaVeyboreakindofsmalltail, duetoadeformityofhislastvertebra.Thisdeformationsupposedlydisapearedafewyears later. Barton also recounts how LaVeyput curses on differentpeople. For example when Jayne Mansfield and her attorney and friend Sam Brody were killed in a car accident everybody agreed to say that Brody hated LaVey and some rumours said that LaVey had cursedBrody,givinghiswordthathewasgoingtodiewithina year.Whenasked,LaVey confirmedtherumours.Bartonexplainsitinherbook:Brodyhadsupposedlytouchedand broken some material used for curses and destruction rituals, and that incident caused the Devil'smalediction. Asanotherexample,Bartonwritesthatin1969LaVeywasinvitedbyLouGordonto appearonhis "hot television show in Detroit" 3.Duringtheshow, "Gordon ridiculed LaVey's odd beliefs" .BackinSanFranciscoLaVeywrotes "a formal curse on blood-red Church of Satan stationary and sent it to Mr. Gordon, who read it on his next broadcast, laughing and scoffing. Gordon died within a year" . SomepeopleindeedconsiderLaVeythemostdangerousmanonearth:thatisdueof coursetohisactivityasHighPriestoftheChurchofSatan,butalsotohisnaturalcharisma, andtohisfictitiouslife,whobothcontributedtohisreputation. Inhis autobiography 4, the rockstarMarilynMansonwrites: "All the power LaVey wielded he gained through fear—the public's fear of a word: Satan. By telling people he was a Satanist, LaVey became Satan in their eyes—which is not unlike my attitude toward becoming a rock star."

Aswehaveseeninthischapter,LaVey fed people'sfearsand played the role ofthe BlackPope,inawaythat,asMansonemphasizes,evokesthatonewhichisusedintheshow business'world.Thatcontributedalottohisfame.Butitalsogavesomeargumentstohis detractors,whohaveaccusedhimtobeanimpostor.

33 Conclusion Asaconclusionweaskourselvesthequestion,whowasreallyAntonSzandorLaVey? The New Yorker 'sjournalist LawrenceWrightdeclaredabouthim: "Quand il est question d'Anton LaVey, il y a trois possibilités. La plus probable, c'est qu'il soit un faussaire complet. Il est possible aussi qu'il soit un psychotique tourmenté par de grandes illusions. La possibilité la plus inquiétante, toutefois, c'est qu'il soit vraiment le diable incarné — peut-être sans même le savoir." 1 LaVey's character is indeed ambiguous, as this statement makes it clear. As a personnal conclusion I am going to give my opinion about him. I think that LaVey was intelligent enough to use people fear to his own interest, so yes in a way he was a manipulator.ButIwouldnottotallyagreewithsomeonewhowouldpretendthatheisjustan impostor,fortworeasons. Thefirstoneisthatitisamazingtonoticethatironically LaVeyprecisely admired figures such as Basil Zaharoff and Cagliostro: "impostors" who knew how to manipulate peopleandhowtotakeadvantageoftheirsuperstitions. LaVey added that these two (and especiallytheirconducts)werereallysatanic!ThatistosaythatinLaVey'seye,manipulation andfalsehoodaresomehowpartofwhatmakessomeonebesatanic. Secondly,thequestionofbeinganimpostorisanonsenseifweconsiderthatanyway hisorganizationhasaBible,acharismaticfigureasleaderandatradition.Forthisreasonwe cannot simply dismiss LaVey as an impostor. Furthermore his movement has also some importancebecause,asIntrovignewrites,LaVeyis,withveryfewexceptions,attheoriginof all the modern satanic organizations. He adds that these would probably not exist without him. Oneofmyprofessoronceaskedmethequestion:istheChurchofSatancoherent?He meantcoherentwithwhatcanbeexpectedfromaChurchdedicatedto theDevil.Butthe problemisthatitnecessarilydependsonourvisionoftheDevil.Ifweconsiderthe traditional image of the Devil :thenotionofcoherencewouldthenberelatedtothewaytheChurchof Satanopposes(bydefinition)totheestablishedChurch.Thentheanswerwouldbeno,inthe sensethattheChurchofSatanreproducesalltheworkingschemesoftheChristianChurch. ButasIhaverepeatedmanytimesinmystudy,theimageofSatanisnotdogmaticinpopular imagery. Soinsteadofaskingthequestionofits"coherence",Iwillratherbrieflytalkaboutthe image of Satan carried by LaVey. Which is a more relevant question in regard to his importancetodayconcerningthenewsatanicgroups.DoingsoIamgoingtosynthesizewhat Ihavebeendoingallthroughoutmystudy. Fromageneralpointofview,theChurchofSatancanbelookedatasan"indicator" ofthe"popularperception"oftheDevil:thefactthattheexistenceofasatanicChurchhas beenacceptedintheamerican"modern"societyshowsthatthefearsinspiredbytheDevil have regressed in our century. In my opinion the character of Satan has lost some of his "powers"inourmoderntimes:hedoesn'tonlyrepresentspureevil,butmoreandmoreHe showspositivecharacteristics,suchassexualfreedom...etc. 1LawrenceWright,Saint&Sinners,AlfredA.Knopf,NewYork,1993,p.121.

34 NeverthelessSatanaspureevilofcoursesillexistsforsomepartofthepopulation.To theotherhehasbeenreplacedinhisrolebyfiguressuchasAdolfHitler.Thatistosaythat theimageoftheDevilisambiguoustoday. LaVeyhasplayedwiththisambiguityandhasfoundedhisChurchuponit.Thisisthe reasonwhyitisdifficultto"classify" LaVey's Church of Satan: LaVey used the fear still inspiredbythewordSatan,thatistosaythe"darker"connotationoftheterm.Butonthe otherside,inhis"philosophy"Satandoesn'tseemsoterrible,andfinallyhisChurchthrivesas arathersympathicandentertainingorganization Finally,inmyopinionitisverydifficulttoconcludeaboutLaVey'srealpersonality, becausehehadcertainlyneversolvedthisambiguityabouthimself.Butthefactthathekept thesameconvictionsuntilhisdeathshowsthatifhewerenotsomehowapsychotic,hewas thenreallyaperseverantfraud!
