Probably more exciting if you either love ot hate the subject matterBy FJK1138Not being a religious person, I can read about Anton LaVey and the Church if Satan with a completely open mind. Whether or not you want to believe, love, or fear anything associated with the Church is entirely up to you. I learned of him in the 80s during all the Satanic Panic associated with all the heavy metal music I grew up on, and that is what primarily drew me to read this book. There is no doubt that Anton was an intelligent and reasonable person who formed a religion based on a mixture of common sense, a dislike of Christian dogma, and a dash of all things theatrical thrown in for good measure. -

HOW BLACK IS BLACK METAL [JOURNALISMUS] nachrichten von heute Kevin Coogan - Lords of Chaos (LOC), a recent book-length examination of the “Satanic” black metal music scene, is less concerned with sound than fury. Authors Michael Moynihan and Didrik Sederlind zero in on Norway, where a tiny clique of black metal musicians torched some churches in 1992. The church burners’ own place of worship was a small Oslo record store called Helvete (Hell). Helvete was run by the godfather of Norwegian black metal, 0ystein Aarseth (“Euronymous”, or “Prince of Death”), who first brought black metal to Norway with his group Mayhem and his Deathlike Silence record label. One early member of the movement, “Frost” from the band Satyricon, recalled his first visit to Helvete: I felt like this was the place I had always dreamed about being in. It was a kick in the back. The black painted walls, the bizarre fitted out with inverted crosses, weapons, candelabra etc. And then just the downright evil atmosphere...it was just perfect. Frost was also impressed at how talented Euronymous was in “bringing forth the evil in people – and bringing the right people together” and then dominating them. “With a scene ruled by the firm hand of Euronymous,” Frost reminisced, “one could not avoid a certain herd-mentality. There were strict codes for what was accept- ed.” Euronymous may have honed his dictatorial skills while a member of Red Ungdom (Red Youth), the youth wing of the Marxist/Leninist Communist Workers Party, a Stalinist/Maoist outfit that idolized Pol Pot. All who wanted to be part of black metal’s inner core “had to please the leader in one way or the other.” Yet to Frost, Euronymous’s control over the scene was precisely “what made it so special and obscure, creating a center of dark, evil energies and inspiration.” Lords of Chaos, however, is far less interested in Euronymous than in the man who killed him, Varg Vikemes from the one-man group Burzum. -

Called “The Black Pope” by many of his followers, Anton LaVey began the road to High Priesthood of the Church of Satan when he was only 16 years old and an organ player in a carnival: “On Saturday night I would see men lusting after half‐naked girls dancing at the carnival, and on Sunday morning when I was playing the organ for tent‐show evangelists at the other end of the carnival lot, I would see these same men sitting in the pews with their wives and children, asking God to forgive them and purge them of carnal desires. And the next Saturday night they’d be back at the carnival or some other place of indulgence. “I knew then that the Christian Church thrives on hypocrisy, and that man’s carnal nature will out!” From that time early in his life his path was clear. Finally, on the last night of April, 1966– Walpurgisnacht, the most important festival of the believers in witchcraft–LaVey shaved his head in the tradition of ancient executioners and announced the formation of The Church Of Satan. “Playing with Art and Artifice: Religious Satanism as Total Environment” Cimminnee Holt1 Introduction “The essence of any magical working is a complete evocation. It is more important to experience total emotional response to one’s environment than all the ‘occult’ knowledge in the world.” – Anton Szandor LaVey2 Anton Szandor LaVey’s (1930-1997) founding of the Church of Satan (CoS) in 1966 was a significant shift in satanic discourse. LaVey is arguably the originator of modern Satanism as a cohesive, codified religion, but there is a long history of how the figure of Satan has been interpreted and reinterpreted by theologians, artists, and philosophers alike. The Hebraic ha-satan in the Book of Job translates as “the Satan,” a designation meaning “the Adversary” or “the Accuser” (Job 1:6 NRSV).3 The Satan is not opposed to God; he is among God’s messengers (mal’āk), a servant in the divine court.4 Under Christian theological interpretations, an accusation of being “satanic” becomes a rhetorical tool to denigrate heretics, pagans, and Jews as the perceived enemies of Christianity.5 In the Enlightenment, Satan’s narrative is reinterpreted yet again, as artists, philosophers, and writers portray satanic figures as a symbol of intellectual non-conformity and sexual liberation, as suavely challenging conventions and the status quo.6 Satan has 1 Concordia University 2 Anton Szandor LaVey, The Devil’s Notebook (Los Angeles: Feral House, 1992), 77. 3 The Hebrew text translates as: “One day the heavenly beings came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them”; Job 1:6. -

KELLY University of Saskatchewan Sz~mmusy.-This review summarizes to date the research on the Barnum effect, the tendency for people to accept vague, ambiguous, and general state- ments as descriptive of their unique personalities. Studies examined address interpretation variables of the Barnum profiles in regard to generality and supposed relevance of the interpretation, favorability of interpretation, type of assessment procedure, and origin and format of interpretation. Also the role of personal factors such as characteristics of the subject and test administrator are examined. It is concluded that the level of acceptance of Barnum profiles depends on the relevance and favorability of the profile and to some extent on the type of assessment utilized. Directions for research on the Barnum effect are provided. The psychological phenomenon whereby people accept general personality interpretations (Barnum profiles) as accurate descriptions of their own unique personalities has been given the name "the Barnum effect" after P. T. Barnum, a famous circus owner whose formula for success was always to have a little something for everybody (Snyder & Shenkel, 1976). Barnum profiles consist of a variety of statements: "Vague, e.g., 'you enjoy a certain amount of change and variety in life'; Double-headed, e.g., 'you are generally cheerful and opti- mistic but get depressed at times'; Modal characteristics of the subject's group, e.g., 'you find that study is not always easy'; favorable, e.g., 'you are forceful and well-liked by others'" (Sundberg, 1955).
