Facing two streets, the site is a corner building on the south of Wellington Street and east of Graham Street. The site locates on Inland Lot 173. The lot was leased under Government Lease in 1844, soon after the establishment of Victoria Town. Three buildings were initially erected on this lot, being - 66 Wellington Street - 68 Wellington Street (Fig. 1) Map of Victoria Town, 1845 (Source: [8]) - 70 Wellington Street. From the land register, it is known that the buildings were owned by various owners during 1840s-1870s, both European and Chinese. One of the significant owners were Thomas Ash Lane and Ninian Crawford[3], founders of Lane Crawford. At the night of 25th December 1878, a catastrophic fire burst out in Central near the junction of Endicott Lane and Queen's Road Central (near current The Centre), it spread southwards rapidly in the coming morning and finally burnt down about 350-400 buildings in the area including all three buildings on this lot. (Fig. 2) Map of Central in 1878, showing the area destroyed by fire in light grey shaded (Sources: [13]) Soon after the fire , the reconstruction of Page 2 of 20 the buildings began.

  • Food and Environmental Hygiene Department Anti-Mosquito Campaign 2021 (Phase I) in Central & Western District
Circulation Paper C&W BEHWC Paper No. 2/2021 Food and Environmental Hygiene Department Anti-mosquito Campaign 2021 (Phase I) in Central & Western District Purpose To brief Members on the arrangements and details for the Anti-mosquito Campaign 2021 (Phase I) to be launched by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) in Central & Western District. Background 2. The Anti-mosquito Campaign 2020 (Phase III) organized by FEHD was launched between 10.8.2020 and 30.10.2020. Actions taken in the district and the results are detailed at Annex I. 3. In 2020, there were 1 local and 21 imported dengue fever cases in Hong Kong. No Zika virus infection case, chikungunya fever case and Japanese encephalitis cases were reported. 4. Dengue fever (DF) is an important mosquito-borne disease with public health concern worldwide, especially in the tropics and sub-tropics. The dengue viruses encompass four different serotypes. Dengue infection has a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations and outcomes. The disease is usually mild and self-limiting, but subsequent infections with other serotypes of dengue virus are more likely to result in severe dengue, which can be fatal. DF is not directly transmitted from person to person. It is transmitted to humans through the bites of infective female Aedes mosquitoes. Patients with DF are infective to mosquitoes during the febrile period. When a patient suffering from DF is bitten by a vector mosquito, the mosquito is infected and it may spread the disease by biting other people. DF can spread rapidly in densely populated areas that are infested with the vectors Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus.
