Paglia2 Received: 19 April 2016 /Accepted: 5 April 2017 /Published online: 1 June 2017 # Springer Science+Business Media New York 2017 Abstract Seasonal changes in food availability influence the behavior and diet of primates, and an understanding of dietary changes is important for the develop- ment of informed conservation plans. Saimiri vanzolinii is a small-bodied, om- nivorous squirrel monkey endemic to the floodplain forests in Central Amazonia. It has a restricted distribution of only ca. 870 km2 and is classified as Vulnerable. We examined seasonal variation in this species’ diet. We collected phenological (presence and absence of ripe fruits from 205 tree species) and dietary and behavioral data for unhabituated groups of S. vanzolinii on nine 2-km transects in the floodplain forests of Central Amazonia for 2 years, encompassing the high- water and low-water periods. Fruit availability was higher, and the monkeys traveled less and fed more during the high-water than the low-water period. There were no seasonal differences between the high-water and low-water periods in the time spent feeding on fruits, flowers, or arthropods. S. vanzolinii spent more time consuming fruit than arthropods in the high-water period, but this was not the case in the low-water period. Cleonice de Oliveira MOURA2 Maria Lúcia ABSY2, Francisco de Assis Ribeiro dos SANTOS3, Antonio Carlos MARQUES-SOUZA2 RESUMO Foi estudada a morfologia dos grãos de pólen de dez espécies de plantas de várzea e igapó provenientes da Ilha da Marchantaria e Tarumã-Mirim, localizadas a 20 Km da cidade de Manaus (AM), coletadas nos períodos de abril a agosto de 2000 e agosto de 2001. As espécies descritas foram Cassia leiandra Benth. (Caesalpiniaceae), Campsiandra comosa var. laurifolia (Benth.) Cowan (Caesalpiniaceae), Hevea spruceana (Benth.) Müll. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae), Piranhea trifoliata Baill. (Euphorbiaceae), Laetia corymbulosa Spruce ex Benth. (Flacourtiaceae), Eschweilera tenuifolia (O. Berg) Miers (Lecythidaceae), Acacia polyphylla DC. (Mimosaceae), Inga micradenia Spruce ex Benth. (Mimosaceae), Simaba orinocensis Kunth (Simarubaceae), Vitex cymosa Bert. ex Spreng. (Verbenaceae). A análise polínica constatou que estas espécies possuem grãos de pólen com características morfológicas bastante variadas. A New Species of Micrantheum (Euphorbiaceae) from Tasmania
59 A NEW SPECIES OF MICRANTHEUM (EUPHORBIACEAE) FROM TASMANIA by A.E. Orchard (w ith three text-figures) A second Tasmanian species of Micrantheum, M. serpentinum, is described from western Tasmania. The new taxon is apparently confined to three small outcrops of serpentine rock. It is closely allied to the more widespread M. hexandrum, and both species are fully described and illustrated. The Brazilian population with limited access to public health programs led to the development and conservation of ethnobotanical knowledge-rich information regarding medicinal plants. However, popular wisdom lacks systematization so that it can correctly use it. Herein we present the Piranhea trifoliata (family Picrondendraceae), an Amazonian plant with a wide variety of molecules with biological effects. The antimalarial effect was the dominant description observed in the studies used for this review, followed by antifungal and antioxidant actions. -

Flowers usually small, unisexual, axillary or subterminal, solitary or in few-flowered fascicles, sessile or shortly pedicellate, apetalous; sepals (2) 4–6 (10+); male flowers with 3, 4, 6 (9–40) stamens, often with a small lobed disc within the staminate whorl, interspersed between it, or stamens inserted in cavities of the disc (or disc absent); filaments free or variously united, anthers dorsifixed, basifixed or sessile, longitudinally dehiscent; female flowers 2- or 3-, rarely up to 5-celled, ovary superior with 2 ovules per cell, styles 2 or 3 (–5), variously united either basally or to half way, disc annular and shallowly lobed or absent. Ecology of Pyrmont peninsula iii Executive summary City Council’s ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030’ initiative ‘is a vision for the sustainable development of the City for the next 20 years and beyond’. It has a largely anthropocentric basis, that is ‘viewing and interpreting everything in terms of human experience and values’(Macquarie Dictionary, 2005). The perspective taken here is that Council’s initiative, vital though it is, should be underpinned by an ecocentric ethic to succeed. This latter was defined by Aldo Leopold in 1949, 60 years ago, as ‘a philosophy that recognizes[sic] that the ecosphere, rather than any individual organism[notably humans] is the source and support of all life and as such advises a holistic and eco-centric approach to government, industry, and individual’(http://dictionary.babylon.com). Some relevant considerations are set out in Part 1: General Introduction. In this report, Pyrmont peninsula - that is the communities of Pyrmont and Ultimo – is considered as a microcosm of the City of Sydney, indeed of urban areas globally. An extensive series of early views of the peninsula are presented to help the reader better visualise this place as it was early in European settlement (Part 2: Early views of Pyrmont peninsula). The physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula has been transformed since European settlement, and Part 3: Physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula describes the geology, soils, topography, shoreline and drainage as they would most likely have appeared to the first Europeans to set foot there. -

Section 4 Engelmann Oak Engelmann Oak Quercus engelmannii USFWS: None CDFG: None MHCP: None Conservation Goals Ensure species persistence within the plan area by conserving major populations, critical locations, and required habitat of Engelmann oak. Conservation Strategy Conserve and manage all major populations and critical locations along with an amount and configuration of suitable habitat to contribute to species recovery (including occupied habitat and adjacent habitat that supports seed dispersal agents). Implement species-specific management actions as necessary to enhance or protect habitat quality. These may include prohibiting adverse activities within preserve areas, developing fire management guidelines, and enhancing declining populations and restoring damaged habitat. Summary of Findings and Conditions for Coverage Findings. [TBD by wildlife agencies in the Biological Opinion after MHCP public review.] Achievement of Conservation Goals. Subject to all MHCP policies and the specific conditions listed herein, the MHCP will adequately conserve this species by conserving about 82% of known locations and assuming 100% conservation of the major and critical population in Escondido. Increased coordination of monitoring and management may improve knowledge of species’ requirements and habitat quality in the study area. Conditions. The following conditions must also be met by the MHCP to adequately conserve this species: (1) All critical locations in Escondido must be substantially conserved in accordance with the critical location policy and managed as part of the preserve system. (2) All conserved populations must be adequately managed to control edge effects. (3)Fire management plans must be implemented for all conserved populations to protect individual plants and habitat from frequent or high-intensity fires.
