As espécies descritas foram Cassia leiandra Benth. (Caesalpiniaceae), Campsiandra comosa var. laurifolia (Benth.) Cowan (Caesalpiniaceae), Hevea spruceana (Benth.) Müll. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae), Piranhea trifoliata Baill. (Euphorbiaceae), Laetia corymbulosa Spruce ex Benth. (Flacourtiaceae), Eschweilera tenuifolia (O. Berg) Miers (Lecythidaceae), Acacia polyphylla DC. (Mimosaceae), Inga micradenia Spruce ex Benth. (Mimosaceae), Simaba orinocensis Kunth (Simarubaceae), Vitex cymosa Bert. ex Spreng. (Verbenaceae). A análise polínica constatou que estas espécies possuem grãos de pólen com características morfológicas bastante variadas. ABSTRACT The present study investigated the pollen grain morphology of ten flooded forest and floodplain plant species from the Marchantaria Island and Tarumã-Mirim located 20 Km from Manaus (AM). The species were collected from April to August 2000 and in August 2001. The following species were described: Cassia leiandra Benth. (Caesalpiniaceae), Campsiandra comosa var. laurifolia (Benth.) Cowan (Caesalpiniaceae), Hevea spruceana (Benth) Müll. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae), Piranhea trifoliata Baill. (Euphorbiaceae), Laetia corymbulosa Spruce ex Benth. The Brazilian population with limited access to public health programs led to the development and conservation of ethnobotanical knowledge-rich information regarding medicinal plants. However, popular wisdom lacks systematization so that it can correctly use it. Herein we present the Piranhea trifoliata (family Picrondendraceae), an Amazonian plant with a wide variety of molecules with biological effects. The antimalarial effect was the dominant description observed in the studies used for this review, followed by antifungal and antioxidant actions. This review provides a synopsis of the recent literature exploring the extracts from P. trifoliata that could efficiently prevent pathologies associated with cellular maintenance mechanisms during malaria or fungal infection and oxidative stress. In this chapter, we attempt to describe the major types of vegetation cover in this vast region as they occurred in pre- Columbian times and outline the conditions that support them. Examining the large-scale phytogeographic regions characterized by each major cover type (see Fig. I), we provide basic information on geology, geological history, topography, and climate; describe variants of physiognomy (vegetation structure) and geography; discuss transitions; and examine some floristic patterns and affinities within and among these regions.

Its classification was discussed during long time by many authors and with the phylogenetic analyses was proved its polyphyletic origin, bearing the dissolution in six distinct families: Phyllanthaceae, Picrodendraceae, Putranjivaceae, Pandaceae, Peraceae e Euphorbiaceae s.s. Considering the floral diversity of these families, fours species were selected to this study, aiming to sample the different groups: Phyllanthus urinaria (Phyllanthaceae), Piranhea trifoliata (Picrodendraceae), Alchornea sidifolia (Euphorbiaceae s.s.) and Microdesmis caseariifolia (Pandaceae). There are few detailed literature about the floral structure of the representants from the allied families of Euphorbiaceae s.l., which makes difficult the accurate usage of the floral characters in studies about systematics and evolution of these groups.

INTRODUCTION Phytotherapy and historical aspects For more than 9.000 years, Neolithic man used different ways to minimize pain, such as by plants, animal blood, cold, heat, and a psychic point of view through magic rites, spells, and communication with gods [1]. In clay plates found, with cuneiform inscriptions, the Sumerians people inhabited the regions near the Tigres and Euphrates river around 4.000 B.C. Used thyme, opium, licorice, and mustard as medicine. The Babylonians expanded the Sumerians list by adding saffron, coriander, cinnamon, garlic, and other herbs [2]. Ancient Egypt gave the world one of its first medical texts: Ebers Papyrus, named by the German Egyptologist Georg Ebers, in 1873, who bought a voluminous roll of papyrus about 20 meters long and was surprised by the translation. The papyrus admitted to having wroten 3.500 B.C. It is composed of a part related to the treatment of internal diseases and an extensive list of medicines containing about 800 recipes and more than 700 magic formulas to treat various ills where many of them use plants.

We identified 10 palynological characters that appear to have systematic significance.
