Buenger Date: 07-18 JOB SUMMARY This position combines administrative management responsibilities for Social Work and Spiritual Care Services within the inpatient areas at UW Health and the delivery of services on an as-needed/on-call basis. The Manager of Social Work and Spiritual Care Services is responsible for: supervision of social work and spiritual care services, the development and implementation of practice standards for social worker and spiritual care chaplains; i.e. orientation, staff development and continuing education program development; consultation regarding social work and spiritual care roles and responsibilities, i.e. productivity monitoring, credentialing, clinical supervision; participation in the recruitment, selection and performance evaluation of social workers and spiritual care chaplains; the development and monitoring of quality standards; and overseeing the planning and implementation of clinical educational opportunities for social work students. As the Manager for Social Work and Spiritual Care Services, the individual works through the coordinated care model and supports a wide range of social work and spiritual care activities including patient/family psycho-social assessment and emotional support, resource planning, consultation, individual and group counseling; education; discharge planning and crises intervention. The person in this position is responsible to the Director of Home Health Care & Coordinated Care: Case Management, Social Work, Home Care, and Spiritual Care Services.

Problems encountered are of a moderate to complex level of difficulty given the diversity and acuity of the patient care needs. Particularly complicated patient/family situations require advanced clinical skill, innovation, flexibility, interpersonal communication and negotiation skills. A significant amount of collaboration with the outcomes managers and clinical practice groups is required as well as independent problem-solving.

Knowledge of and ability to work within a complex health care system is required in the position. Skill in verbal and written communication is required to provide multiple clinical caregivers in inpatient and outpatient settings, various hospital departments, and external agencies with information necessary to patient care.

The Manager for Social Work and Spiritual Care Services is required to develop relationships with multiple external agencies related to specific clinical populations served: i.e. Agencies, County , Bureau of Disability Determination, and the Social Security Administration.

An ability to work autonomously and utilize organizational skills is essential to successfully provide the diverse services that patients and families require as well as to respond to consultation requests from legal, psychiatry, physicians, behavioral health, pastoral care, nursing, clinics, home care, other hospital disciplines, and community health professionals. An ability to collaborate with nurse outcomes managers, case managers, other social workers and including the willingness to accept and be held accountable for delegated activities.

The Social Work and Spiritual Care Services Manager possesses advanced clinical skill and provides assistance to hospital leadership by participating in emergency on-call or disaster response, or when asked to deal with compliance, conflict, complex grief or crisis issues. This individual demonstrates the awareness of theoretical orientations that guide social work and spiritual care practice in order to select appropriate interventions. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES The incumbent performs the following job responsibilities:

I. Administrative Skill

A. The Manager of Social Work and Spiritual Care Services is required to have a solid understanding of contemporary Health care delivery, especially as it relates to academic medical centers. Knowledge of change theory and ability to implement change strategies are necessary to facilitate the integration of social work and spiritual care services into the overall care of patients across the health care continuum.

1. Develops and implements practice standards for the clinical social worker and chaplains. 2. Provides consultation for social work and chaplain roles and responsibilities. 3. Manages the recruitment, selection and performance evaluation of UW Health social workers and chaplains. 4. Develops a systematic approach for the supervision, evaluation and ongoing development of individual social workers and chaplains as necessary. 5. Provides leadership for the development and monitoring of quality standards for social work and spiritual care services. 6. Provides oversight for the planning and implementation of educational opportunities for social workers, social work students, and spiritual care chaplains. 7. Demonstrates knowledge of reimbursement and benefit changes as they relate to the analysis and improvement of cost effective quality care at UW Health. 8. Demonstrates the ability to solve problems through critical evaluation of data-based information and continuous improvement efforts that lead to effective quality-based outcomes for the patient and family. 9. Provides leadership specific to the HEICS emergency response system relative to the role of psychosocial UW HEALTH JOB DESCRIPTION support leader and mobilization of social work and spiritual care services.

II. Technical Skill

A. The UWHC Manager of Social Work and Spiritual Care Services performs his/her job demonstrating technical ability, understanding of job, expectations and compliance with organizational policies and procedures. The incumbent performs the following job responsibilities.

1. Demonstrates understanding of UW Health and Coordinated Care Department’s Mission, Vision, Policy and Procedures. 2. Demonstrates consultative expertise specific to psychosocial, ethical, financial and legal issues. 3. Verbalizes knowledge specific to community resources. 4. Demonstrates a high level of social work and spiritual care clinical competency specific to assessment skills, problem solving and critical thinking, problem-focused counseling, managing compliance, conflict, and crisis issues and discharge planning. 5. Demonstrates the ability to work within acceptable professional and community standards of practice for clinical social work and spiritual care.

III. Communication and Teamwork

A. The Manager of Social Work and Spiritual Care Services supports the Coordinated Care Clinical Practice Team model by collaborating with the Nurse Outcomes Managers to provide quality patient care in a cost-effective manner. The incumbent receives consultative requests from the director and other members of the health care team. He/she demonstrates respect and cooperative professional relationships in fulfilling the goals and mission of UW Health and this position.

1. Maintains good working relationships with other members of the health care team. 2. Demonstrates leadership and active participation in Coordinated Care Department meetings, social work meetings, spiritual care meetings, clinical case conferences, and in both social work and spiritual care educational presentations. 3. Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as appropriate interpersonal skills when interacting with colleagues in social work, spiritual care, and other disciplines, visitors, patients and their family members.

IV. Professional Development

A. The Manager of Social Work and Spiritual Care Services enhances professional and departmental growth through active participation in professional organizations, department council activities, and community organizations. Remains knowledgeable about the impact of physical disabilities, chronic, acute and terminal illnesses on patient and family well-being.

1. Participates in professional seminars/conferences and continuing education programs. 2. Uses an evidence-based practice approach to review current literature related to medical social work and spiritual care programs. 3. Participates in community awareness programs and volunteer activities. 4. Applies principles of interdisciplinary teamwork and maintains a working knowledge of the roles of other healthcare professionals.
