Athens, June 2020 2 Keywords: biomass, combined heat and power (CHP), District Heating (DH), energy efficiency, electricity, thermal energy, Thermal Energy Storage (TES), regulation, policy Abstract The European Union (EU) is committed to reduce carbon emissions by 80-95% in 2050, when compared to 1990. To reach this ambitious objective, a shift in energy consumption to low carbon, locally produced energy, and Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is needed. The use of biomass to produce electricity, heat and fuels could significantly help towards this direction. More specifically, the generation of electricity supplemented by the production of thermal energy (Combined Heat and Power - CHP) is an efficient way το achieve EU’s targets. The produced thermal energy of the CHP plant could be used to supply District Heating Networks (DHN) of cities with cold climate. In the context of this master’s thesis, the application of biomass for CHP in Europe was studied. At the beginning was analyzed the policy framework for biomass and CHP in EU. Furthermore, an extensive analysis of the EU’s legal regime of biomass and cogeneration from it was executed. This analysis was further extended for the case of Greece. Moreover, the available technologies for biomass CHP were studied and the main advantages and disadvantages of biomass, as well as applications of CHP plants worldwide, were presented. Furthermore, a feasibility study concerning the installation of a CHP plant supplying with thermal energy the DHN of the city of Amynteon (Greece) was executed. Following a detailed energy study for the calculation of the installed electrical and thermal capacity of the specific plant, an extensive techno-economic analysis was performed, which proved that under certain conditions the relative investment could be profitable. Finally, an optimization study concerning the installation of a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system in parallel with the CHP plant was also executed. 3 Table of Contents List of Tables Land subsidence caused by overexploitation of aquifers manifests with an increasing frequency in several regions of Greece. The first signs of land subsidence have been identified since 1965 at the west side of Thessaloniki (broader Kalochori village region), in the form of a progressive marine invasion. Since then several areas have been investigated and proved to be affected mainly by the overexploitation of the aquifers. The Multi- disciplinary nature of the subsidence mechanism combining the geological, hydrogeological and morphological setting of the areas with the human activities and the land use data makes their study complicated and require the intervention of multiple scientific specialties. Furthermore, at several sites, beside ground truth data, the land subsidence trends and extends have been also identified via multi-temporal InSAR techniques, such as PSI and SBAS techniques. Among the sites to be presented in the current paper is the wider area of Kalochori village in the eastern part of Thessaloniki plain, the east and west Thessaly plain in central Greece and the region extending to the west–southwest of the Amyntaio opencast coalmine in West Macedonia.

Macedonians who live in Greece to this day are afraid to speak of their terrible ordeals for fear of repercussions from the Greek authorities or because it is simply too painful for them to remember. To this day it is taboo in Greece to speak of the Greek Civil War. The Macedonians in Greece it seems have been ignored by all sides. Yugoslavia has ignored them because it did not want to ruin its good relations with Greece. Greece on the other hand, to this day claims that Macedonians simply do not exist and wants no part of them. Bulgaria, even though it has a large Macedonian immigrant population from Greece, has yet to recognize the Macedonian people as a distinct ethnic group. So in reality no one really cares about the Macedonians in Greece and as a result very little to nothing has been written about them. “Indeed, the Macedonians in Greece are hardly ever mentioned in scholarly literature and have been virtually forgotten as a people and as a national minority.” (Andrew Rossos) This is most unfortunate not only because the Macedonian contribution to the struggle against Fascism and Nazism has been completely omitted, but because the Macedonian people themselves living in Greece despite their contributions, have been completely ignored as if they didn’t exist.
