Mumbai & Goa 5D Mumbai & Goa 5D ITINERARY: DAY 01: SINGAPORE – MUMBAI - GOA (MOB) Met upon arrival at Goa international airport later assisted transfer to your hotel. Overnight at hotel. DAY 02: GOA (B/L/D) After breakfast proceed with full day tour of Goa. OLD GOA has truly earned the name ‘Rome of the East’. It bounds in churches and chapels, some dating back to the 16th century. The profusion and architectural excellence of churches include superb examples of late renaissance, early baroque, Manueline and Gothic. The most popular or the best know churches and the cathedrals are at Old Goa. Certainly open on Sundays, other days are variable. The ones at old Goa are open daily. But A few which are worth mentioning & visit. BASILICA OF BOM JESUS: This is the most well recognized church in Goa. “Bom Jesus” means “Infant Jesus” to whom the Church is dedicated. SE CATHEDRAL: Situated across the road from the Basilica, this is the largest church in Asia. The Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Catherine. CHURCH OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI: Behind the Se Cathedral, in the same structure, lies the church of the Franciscans who were the earliest missionaries to Goa. The attached convent now houses the archaeological museum with portraits of Goa’s viceroys and Hindu Sculptures. Shree Shantadurga temple has an impressive idol of Goddess Shree Durga who mediated between Shree Vishnu and Shree Shiva and stopped the fierce full war going on between the two. She is flanked by Vishnu and Shiva on both the sides. The temple is a fusion of Indo-Portuguese architecture. The highlight of the temple is its golden palanquin (palkhi) in which the deity is carried on festive occasions. Shri Ramnath Temple: The temple of Ramnathi belongs to the Saraswat Brahmins (belonging to Kavale mutt & Kashi Mutt). The temple houses 5 main deities namely - Shri Ramanath (chief deity), Shanteri, Kamakshi, Laxmi Narayan, Ganapati, Betal and Kalbhairav, along with other family purushas. Shri Ramanath Deity was originally installed 3000 years B.C by Rama at Rameshwar. When Rama came back from Lanka along with Sita, after killing Ravana, he decided to pray to Shiva in order to absolve him of killing a Brahmin. Hence a Shivlinga was installed and Rama prayed to it. Lord Shiva came and sent Rama to Guru Gorakshnath. There are 12 Panths and One of the Panth started from Rama. This came to be known as Ramanath. Afternoon at Leisure. Overnight at hotel. DAY 03: GOA (B/L/D) After breakfast proceed with full day tour of Goa. Mapusa (Konkani: mhapxem) is a town in North Goa, India. It is situated 13 km north of the capital Panaji. The town is the headquarters of Bardez Taluka. It is located on the main highway NH-17, linking Mumbai to Kochi. In Portuguese the town's name is spelt Mapuçá. Candolim: Candolim is the first beach that can be approached from the city of Panaji. Calangute: Calangute is the beach to which everyone heads for the moment they land in Goa. So it is natural that it is overcrowded in both in peak and off seasons. This huge seven-kilometer sweep of sand located 15 kms From Panaji, is called the 'Queen of Beaches'. Baga: This is part of a 30 km stretch of beach coastline along the west coast of Goa by the Arabian sea that begins at Fort Aguada continues as Sinquerim Beach, then as Candolim Beach and merges into Calangute Beach and then to Baga beach. As compared to Calangute Beach, it is quieter and also more isolated. Its scenic beauty, with the creek, the Retreat House perched on the hill and the lack of local tourist buses all have contributed to its unique beauty. It is more popular with western tourists who love to use it as a base for water sports and fishing in the area. Vagator: This beautiful beach is located about 22 Kms from Panaji and is situated in Bardez taluka. This is part of a 30 km stretch of beach coastline along the west coast of Goa by the Arabian Sea that begins at Fort Aguada continues as Sinquerim beach, then as Candolim beach and merges into Calangute beach and then to Baga beach and then Anjuna beach and then to Vagator beach finally ending at Chapora beach and Fort. In the Vedic text he is known by the names like Urugai, Urukram 'which means wide going and wide striding respectively'^. A seal showing a Kushan chief standing in a respectful pose before the four armed God holding a wheel, mace a ring like object and a globular object observed by Cunningham appears to be one of the early representations of Vishnu". 1. • The Concept of Mahishasurmardini Is Puranic
CHAPTER 4. FEMALE DEITIES DPuranic female deities 1. Evolution oiMahishasurmardini in ^Q Purans - The concept of Mahishasurmardini is Puranic. The Markandey Puran gives a detailed description of evolution of this deity in its chapter titled Devi Mahatmyam. It is compiled in the form of 579 Shloks\ The Markandey Puran is divided into 5 distinct parts out of which chapter 79-90 provide references to Durga under the title Devi Mahatmyam'^. This was further extended to 700 Shloks which included elaborate rituals. This documentation is called as Durga Saptshati'\ The Markandey Puran is assigned to the 10* century and a copy of the same was found in the Royal Library' of Nepal which was dated to 998 CE**. However the date of Devi Mahatmyam being written is considered to be of 5th-6'*' century^ It is also concluded that this Puran must have originated in western India^. This makes the Puran more relevant for this study. The Devi Mahdtymydm mentions a detailed description of the evolution of this deity. In its Chapter 2 titled Madhyam-Charit it mentions that a demon named Mahishasur has defeated all the gods along with their chief Indra in a battle which lasted for nearly 100 years^. This chapter corresponds to chapter 79 of Markandey Purdn^. This demon had taken control over the Sury, Indra, Agni, Vdyu, Chandra, Yum, Varun, Kuher etc. Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma were approached by the gods to save them from this menace^. On hearing this all the three gods sent out Tej through their body. Shankar 's Tej created her face while Yum's Tej created her hair.
