This term we’ve been celebrating reading!

Leading children’s author, Tom Palmer came to visit school as part of the We Are Reading initiative.

Whilst in school, Tom spoke to a number of students and also spoke to all of Year 7 in an assembly. He issued a penalty kick challenge to the students who correctly answered his questions, with Mrs Wilson in goal!

The school library has all of Tom’s titles available to loan, so check them out!

In March we also celebrated World Book Day. Pop up booths were installed around school, where students could pose as characters from Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland and other popular books. There was also a competition for students to design their own props.

Staff were also involved by hiding the titles of books and authors on their person or around their classroom. The last a c t i v i t y i n v o l v e d t h e m e d assemblies held through the week where authors read sections of their favourite books to encourage students to read for pleasure. Trips and activities

39 students from Year 9, 10, 11 visited Valencia in March for a five day sporting trip where they honed their football skills at training sessions every day. They were given the chance to play a team from FC Porto’s Academy (where they won 2:1!) and also visited Valencia’s stadium.

Talented linguists from Year 8 put their language The 11th German exchange with our partner school skills to the test on a visit to Manchester Metropolitan in Bad Aibling, Bavaria, got under way this year on University. The group attended a lecture on the 11th March. 17 German students accompanied by importance of language study, enjoyed taster Deputy Head, Steffi Kieweg, and Head of English , sessions in Arabic and Mandarin, learnt about the Dani Ferstl , arrived in Manchester from Munich. The Chinese New Year and even took part in a salsa German students were hosted by 16 different dance class! families of Y8, 9 and 10 students. After a day in school, sampling and taking part in their partners’ lessons, they had trips to Helmshore Textile Museum, York, Liverpool and Manchester , visiting the Beatles Museum, the Etihad Stadium and the National Railway Museum. Despite experiencing possibly the worst weather so far this year all students had a very positive experience and we are looking forward to our return trip in July.

For three days in March, 17 year 11 students and three teachers completed a Duke of Edinburgh Silver Practice Expedition in the Yorkshire Dales.

The three teams of students walked between Austwick, Ingleton and Thornton in Lonsdale. Day one had the teams covering ten miles of rolling countryside, whereas day two took in twelve miles of open fell. The weather was ideal for walking but when it came to camping, the wind chill put temperatures just above freezing during the night!

All three teams completed the expedition in good humour and coped very well with the trials and tribulations. They all improved their navigation and campcraft skills, taking challenges such as studying a map for three minutes, then walking for 3km from memory! After the GCSE exams are completed, the students involved will be completing their qualifying expedition in the Lake District.

Well done everyone, a fantastic achievement Issue 13 Easter 2019

There has been a greater focus in the media on the potential negative impact of children using screens for long periods of time. UK Chief Medical Officers have provided some advice for parents and carers that highlights some of their main concerns, accompanied with suggestions as to how these risks can be reduced. We see evidence of these concerns within our school environment and continue to seek parental support in ensuring children are safe, happy and are prepared to take on the challenges that the school day brings. Thank you for your continued support. Haslingden High School & Sixth Form
