They seem to have an appeal, even to those who - long since - gave up the habit of regular church going. Thus, most Sunday afternoons, on BBC 1, people can tune in to ‘Songs of Praise’ to hear a mixture of hymns old and new, together with insights into how local people view their faith, or contribute to their community in remarkable and generous ways. Hymns have their origin in the plainsong of medieval monasteries: it was there, too, that harmony developed. Later, hymns were given a boost at the time of the Church Reforms of the 1500s – Martin Luther, in Germany was a prolific writer of hymns for his Reformed congregations to sing. In the English services metrical versions of the Psalms developed such as ‘The Lord’s my Shepherd’ (Psalm 23) or ‘All people that on earth do dwell’ (Psalm 100). Come the 1700’s and writers such as Isaac Watts produced ‘When I survey the wondrous Cross’: whilst Charles Wesley produced many of the still frequently sung hymns that accompanied the emergence of Methodism. Still the process goes on: new congregations need new music and new songs: in a period when the older style of church is frequently being replaced by a new style of church, new hymn writers such as Graham Kendrick have produced great words and tunes with hymns such as ‘Meekness and Majesty’ or ‘The Servant King’: similarly, Stuart Townend’s ‘In Christ alone my hope is found’ and ‘How deep the Father’s love for us’ are theologically good words, set to good tunes. On the more Catholic side, the hymns of Bernadette Farrell such as ‘Christ be our Light’ or ‘God, you search me and you know me’ express deep spiritual truth for hungry souls. All these can be picked up, easily, on the Internet. Still, the process continues – this tradition which goes back to the Psalms of Old Testament days: and to what St Paul described as the ‘psalms and hymns and spiritual songs’ of New Testament times are echoed today in the hymns of new writers that churches of all types can tune into and use as a vehicle of refreshing worship and song.
