These may be funny, embarrassing, and…oh, just read them yourself. Enjoy, and share SMILE them with someone who needs a laugh! My father had a medical condition that meant regular visits to hospital. The local funeral director was a family friend, and had been very helpful giving dad lifts to and from the hospital. On one occasion, a few hours before he was due to come home, the ward sister approached my father with a grin. “Your wife is on the phone,” she said; “She wants to know what time you will be ready for the undertaker to collect you?”

A notice outside Chichester Cathedral advertised lunchtime concerts with the encouragement that: “Sandwiches may be eaten.” Someone had scribbled underneath: “So if you are a sandwich, don’t come!”

It is said that if it rains on his special day, 15th July, it will then rain for 40 days after that. It all began when Swithun was made Bishop of Winchester in 852 by King Ethelwulf of Wessex. It was an important posting: Winchester was the capital of Wessex, and during the 10 years Swithun was there, Wessex became the most important kingdom of . Childswickham WI Held at Childswickham Memorial Hall on Wednesday, 7th June 2017

With a change in the advertised programme President Innes Cole introduced the speaker for the evening. Was it Jane Austin or Little Bo Peep? Dressed as a Georgian lady, the Blue and Green Badge guide Sandy Cale took the members on a pictorial walk around Georgian Worcester. The city had largely been destroyed for its Royalist connections by the Parliamentarians during the civil war. A new city featuring the distinctive Georgian architecture soon revived the fortunes of its citizens. It became the centre for the manufacture of gloves, porcelain and sauce. We ‘visited’ a number of existing Georgian buildings. The county gaol with 190 cells and underground tunnel to the Infirmary where bodies were taken for medical research. Then to the Guildhall which is renown as one of the finest baroque buildings in the UK and dates from 1721. It has 3 holding cells in the basement with stairs to the Courtroom above and on the upper floor the stunning Assembly Hall. St Swithun’s Church is another Georgian gem. It is light and airy with boxed pews and a three-decker pulpit. Looking up at the roof line another curiosity can be seen. This is a belvedere, a small room with windows allowing views in every direction over the Worcestershire countryside. There were seventeen coaching inns in the city as it was on the main Liverpool—Bristol— coaching route. Evidence of their existence can be found in Castle Inn Passage and Reindeer Court. We heard about Dr John Wall who founded the Infirmary in 1746 and Worcester Porcelain in 1751; St Charles Hastings, founder of the British Medical Association, and the Three Choirs competition; and Hannah Snell, a woman who fooled the army into believing she was a man and served as a Royal Marine in India before becoming a Chelsea Pensioner. Mrs Cale’s interesting talk underlined her pride in the Georgian heritage of the city of her birth.

The President gave the vote of thanks. The evening ended with refreshments, the raffle and competitions.

The next meeting is on Wednesday, 5th July at 7.30pm.

Speakers from Practical Action – Jerry and Sue Morgan

Practical Action is a small charity that punches far beyond its weight. Founded as the Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG) in 1965 by E.F. Schumacher, author of "Small is Beautiful", it puts his ideas into practice. Working among some of the poorest communities in the world these practical solutions have lifted some millions of people out of poverty and continue to be adopted by a number of big named NGOs. The speaker has visited the work in Bangladesh and will focus on his experiences there.

When Lennon met McCartney During a Europe-wide heat-wave 60 years ago, on 6th July 1957, John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time – at what must be one of the best documented church fetes in history.

This was the annual Woolton Parish Church Garden Fete in Liverpool – a parade and outdoor fair at which 16-year-old John and his Quarry Men skiffle group had been invited to play. The main attractions were a dog show and a brass band.

It was far from inevitable that they would meet. The two boys lived in different neighbourhoods, went to different schools and were nearly two years apart in age. But the younger Paul, who was entranced by John’s performance as a lead singer, was introduced to him by a friend in the church hall.

Despite himself, John was impressed when Paul played a couple of songs and showed him how to tune his guitar properly. Later, he invited him to join the band. The pair went on to form the Beatles.

A recording of the Quarry Men’s performance at the fete sold at auction in 1994 for £78,500. The Beatles Bible website has the tagline “Not Quite as Popular as Jesus”.

It is 50 years since their ‘album that changed pop music’ was released. It is, of course, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. One in five households in the country owned the album. I’ve still got mine, have you?

Broadway Station Progress June 2017

Much of May was taken up with the move of our storage containers and portakabins from their location on platform 1. Although this involved a lot of effort both before and after the move, the now familiar construction tasks continued.

A significant sign of progress is the erection of the main steel roof trusses which will support the roof canopy over the station building. This happened just before the late May Bank Holiday, and just in time for us to show it off to the visitors to our open evening which took place on the Friday of the holiday weekend. Work has continued in the driveway and more spear fencing has been erected at the rear of the southern end of platform 1. Our viewing platform has become a casualty of this activity, having been removed to allow fencing and footpath work to continue. Although this means that the view of the site is now more restricted it is also a sign of progress.

Members of the railway’s Signal and Telegraph department have been on site and have erected three signal posts just beyond the northern end of the platforms. At the time of writing another signal post is on site, and will be erected at the southern end of platform 1 near to the bridge over Station Road. Our open evening this year was a great success, and blessed with fine, sunny weather (although it was a bit warm for setting up during the day!). Musical entertainment was provided by the Harvington Ukulele Band, and their music was enjoyed by many on this fine evening. Visits to the signal box were popular, and our volunteers were kept busy answering questions. The signal box provided the best vantage point from which to see the steelwork on the station building and the progress of the embankment stabilisation work. Thank you all who turned up to support us. Thanks are also due to Graham and his Routemaster bus for providing the shuttle service from the Childswickham Road car park and to the Caravan Club site for allowing the bus to turn in their entrance parking area.

The railway’s ‘Last Mile’ share offer expired at the end of April, and raised £1,330,500 – some £80,000 above the target figure. This is welcome news, as the work to stabilise the embankment south of the station will cost more than originally anticipated.

By the end of May the new track had progressed almost as far as the bridge at Pry Lane, and the tracklaying gang have the station almost in sight. Trains are now running beyond Laverton to a point just north of Little Buckland Bridge.

For those of you with internet access who want to keep abreast of progress on a regular basis, a blog detailing our work at the station can be found at: http://broadwaystationgroup.blogspot.co.uk and a blog giving details of the tracklaying can be found at: http:// broadwayextensionblog.blogspot.co.uk

Next issue September 2017 Deadline August 10th Village News July/August 2017 Parish Council News for Childswickham, Murcot and Mount Pleasant: May 2017 The Annual Parish Meeting.

The annual parish meeting was held on Thursday 11th May at 7pm in Childswickham Village Hall.

Cllr Anthony Halling was re-elected as Chairman, and John Lowe as Vice-Chairman.

We thought you’d like to know about just some of the activities we have been involved in over the previous 12 months:

Social media: We’ve increased our social media presence to make our activities more accessible. This includes posting to the village Facebook page (thanks to Vikki for managing the page) and updates in the village magazine.

Playing fields: The playing fields belong to the Parish and are being legally registered as such. Mrs Douch, a previous resident kindly donated £5,000 to pay for new equipment and a picnic bench in the field. Please make use of the facilities now the warmer weather is on its way.

Phone Box: The phone box is now owned by the Parish, and we are exploring ways to use it that will benefit the whole community. Mr and Mrs Brazier and Mr Mike Machnicki have kindly volunteered to act as custodians.

Speeding: Speeding through and around the village continues to cause concern. Cllr Wade has lead an initiative that is currently being considered by the WCC Highways department. 3 pairs of white gates will also be installed at pertinent entry points to the village to help with traffic calming.

Points of View: All parish council members give up their time freely to help make our village a better place to live. We can do this more effectively if we have your support and interaction. So, if you have a concern, issue or comment about village life please get in touch. You can do this by writing to us and posting the letter in the Parish Council post box outside the village hall.

Report It. Have you spotted an issue affecting village life and you’re not sure what to do about it? The following link can be used to report concerns with roads and pavements, overgrown shrubbery, drainage and rights of way. The more individuals who report an issue the better. http://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/homepage/98/report_it

Best wishes, from your Parish Council Team.

The less you move, the more you age

Older people who spend most of their time sitting down age significantly quicker than those who are more active.

To add some detail to that: if you sit for 10 hours or more a day, and do less that 40 minutes of moderate physical activity, then you will end up with a body of a person eight years older than your real age. You may have shortened telomeres, the tiny caps found on the ends of strands of DNA which protect chromosomes and which are associated with faster ageing.

Experts from AgeUK are therefore urging older people to make sure that they stand up and walk around every 20 minutes, if at all possible. Government advice recommends 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise a week for older people.

UK Active urges: “With health and social care budgets stretched to the limit, it’s time to end our love affair with the chair, and get people moving again. It’s never too late to get active, and simple things at home, such as carrying the groceries, climbing more stairs and pottering around the garden can play a huge role in staying healthy and independent. Keeping active is the surest way to look after our physical, mental and social health, adding life to our years and years to our life.”

CARPET BOWLING Carpet Bowling continues in the Memorial Hall on a Monday evening from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Bowling on a Tuesday afternoon is suspended during the summer months and all participants are invited to join in on Monday evening. No bowling experience is required. Robert Simms
