Superbock Super Rock Festival Parque Das Nações, Lisboa Cincinnati indie band The National have been around since 1999 but for many listeners, they are still under the radar. Four of the band’s albums were included on NME’s 2013 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time - Trouble Will Find Me (2013); Boxer (2007); Alligator (2005) and High Violet (2010). At the just concluded Latitude Festival in Suffolk, UK (July 14-17), The SuperBock Super Rock Festival Guardian wrote: Parque das Nações, Lisboa, Portugal The only band to headline Latitude twice, the National are in between July 14, 2016 records, and using the summer’s festivals to test-run material from their prospective seventh album. The Cincinnati five-piece play five new songs: The Day I Die has a kicky riff and medicated vocals, while Find A Way recalls early highlight, About Today. Berninger calls an unnamed new one “our prom song”. “Kind of depressing,” he deadpans. “It’s super sexy though.” He spits beer onto the stage during Afraid Of Everyone, which increasingly feels like an anthem for these paranoid times, and they close in time-honoured fashion, leading the crowd in an acoustic rendition of Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks. For all the extracurricular activities on offer at Latitude, nothing beats moments like these. + + + + + Thanks to dcr666 for sharing the Lisboa show at Dime. dcr666 noted: “Incomplete concert broadcast on Antena 3, only the main set without the encore.” Lineage: JVC-MXD301T FM Receiver > M-Audio Quattro > Audacity MP3 Version (tracksplitting and fades) > TLH > Flac level 8 01. • Writer Carin Besser on Composing Lyrics for the National
To help you grow your creative practice, our website is available as an email. Subscribe May 17, 2019 - As told to Brandon Stosuy, 1971 words. Tags: Music, Writing, Process, Collaboration, Time management. On writing lyrics for the National Writer and editor Carin Besser on collaborating with her husband Matt Berninger, finding the right words for a song and a singer, and how a band is like a family. What’s your process generally like for writing lyrics? Matt [Berninger] mentioned to me that you had an even bigger role on the new album. Does the band give you an instrumental to write lyrics to? Or does Matt start a draft and you revise? It has been different on every record, but it almost always starts with a musical sketch from the band. Maybe some ideas and phrases have collected and are hanging around in notebooks, but usually those are just things to start with, or play around with. They almost always have to change into something else before they’ll work in a song. On every record there have been a handful of songs that Matt and I work on together—sometimes he’s put something aside and I pick it up for a while. Sometimes he’ll have just a chorus and I’ll try to write verses, or sometimes there are just mumbles and nonsense words that we both record and trade. Maybe I do some mumbles, and then he’ll go and sing over it and say, “Look what you wrote!” He’s very encouraging like that, especially when he doesn’t want to work all alone on something.

2 I have been the editor of magazines on tropical fish, exotic pets, UFOs, cryptozoology, and – of course – music, and there is something that I have noticed. Over the years various publishers have tried to get me to publish “thematic” issues, and this is something that I am loathe to do. For example, in a music magazine like this one, if I were to do a themed “punk” issue, it would immediately alienate all the people who like progressive rock. That is one thing that I am particularly proud of in this magazine; we cover anything, and everything, from anarchopunk to prog, and from folk to experimental jazz rock. In this specific issue there is everything from an interview with Barbara Dickson to articles about Rick Wakeman and Hugh Hopper. But, it is one of the more peculiarly Fortean aspects of magazine publishing that no matter how hard one tries, the vagaries of the space time continuum and Dear Friends, the very nature of the universe itself mean that no matter how hard you try to avoid doing themed Welcome to another edition of the Gonzo Weekly. issues, these appear of their own volition and the I have worked in publishing, on and off, since I first universe decides to present you with a theme, come edited my school newspaper at the age of 10, and what may. whilst I do not wish to claim that I am some sort of Citizen Kane-type publishing mogul, I have had a Once again, look at this issue. What could possibly go wrong? MAN UP is an honest, heart-warming romantic comedy about taking chances and rolling with the consequences. One night, two people, on a first date like no other... SHORT SYNOPSIS Meet Nancy (Lake Bell): 34, single, hung-over, and exhausted by her well meaning but clueless friends’ continual matchmaking. 10 times bitten, 100 times shy, after an especially disastrous set-up at her friends’ engagement party, Nancy is basically done with dating. She’s reached the end of her rope, and is more than happy to hole up, seal up, and resign herself to a life alone. That is until Jack (Simon Pegg) mistakes Nancy for his blind date under the clock at Waterloo Station, and she does the unthinkable and just… goes with it. Because what if pretending to be someone else finally makes her man up, and become her painfully honest, awesomely unconventional, and slightly unstable true self? Best just to let the evening unfold, roll with the consequences, and see if one unpredictable, complicated, rather unique night can bring these two messy souls together.
