THE TRUTH CAN CATCH THE LIE: THE FLAWED UNDERSTANDING OF ONLINE SPEECH IN INRE ANoNYMous ONLINE SPEAKERS Musetta Durkeet In the early years of the Internet, many cases seeking disclosure of anonymous online speakers involved large companies seeking to unveil identities of anonymous posters criticizing the companies on online financial message boards.' In such situations, Internet service providers (ISPs)-or, less often, online service providers (OSPs)2-- disclosed individually- identifying information, often without providing defendants notice of this disclosure,' and judges showed hostility towards defendants' motions to quash.4 Often these subpoenas were issued by parties alleging various civil causes of action, including defamation and tortious interference with business contracts.s These cases occurred in a time when courts and the general public alike pictured the Internet as a wild west-like "frontier society,"' devoid of governing norms, where anonymous personalities ran C 2011 Musetta Durkee. t J.D. Technopopulism: the Emergence of a Discursive Formation
tripleC 15(2): 441-458, 2017 http://www.triple-c.at Technopopulism: The Emergence of a Discursive Formation Marco Deseriis Northeastern University, Boston, USA, [email protected], http://neu.academia.edu/MarcoDeseriis Abstract: This article contends that technopopulism is a discursive formation that emerges from the convergence of two preexisting discourses: populism and technolibertarianism. Whereas these discourses are historically distinct the 2008 financial crisis and the 2011 wave of struggles precipitated the political conditions for their intersection. Such convergence produces both tensions and possibilities. On the one hand, technopopulism engenders a radically participatory model of democracy, which is ultimately anti-institutional as citizens cooperate and engage in sophisticated decision-making without the mediation of professional politicians. On the other hand, the more electorally successful technopopulist parties are led by charismatic leaders who synthesize the positions that emerge from the netroots to mobi- lize them against the establishment. These two seemingly contradictory aspects precipitate in two variants of technopopulism: a leaderless-technocratic variant, which is derived from the open source mode of governance and from early experiments of the Global Justice Movement in networked self-government; and a leaderist-populist variant, which is more strictly focused on the electoral competition as an intrinsically hegemonic practice. The article concludes with a reflection on the discursive complementarity of these two variants. We propose a hazards model that flexibly captures the impact of three different measures of network overlap (i.e., common followees, common followers and common mutual followers) on content sharing. Our results indicate a receiver is more likely to share content from a sender with whom they share more common followees, common followers or common mutual followers after accounting for other measures. Additionally, the effect of common followers and common mutual followers is positive when the content is novel but decreases, and may even become negative, when many others in the network have already adopted it. -

Riggs This study deepens existing knowledge concerning social networking sites, with specific interest in the social networking site Facebook and the phenomenon, “Facebook stalking”. By providing insights into lesser-known studies concerning user curiosity and surveillance online, the present research reveals that the terms ‘monitoring’ and ‘keeping up with’ or ‘keeping in touch with’ are most commonly used when referring to social searches within social networks; only when asked to think about surveillance in terms of stalking did interview participants refer to it as such. The present study aims to discover Facebook users’ perception of their friends’ disclosure while delving into the idea of “Facebook stalking”, specifically with regard to how users define it. Facebook’s evolution and prominence in the public sphere is dependent upon user satisfaction with and general understanding of the functionality of social networking websites. A discussion of these issues is beneficial to understanding how Facebook is used as a modern-day panopticon. -

1 Running Head: THE END OF FORGETTING Title The end of forgetting: Strategic agency beyond the Panopticon Authors Jonah Bossewitch Communications Doctoral Program, Columbia University, USA Aram Sinnreich School of Communication and Information, Rutgers University, USA Abstract The rapid explosion of information technologies in recent years has contributed to a substantive change in the social dimensions of information sharing, and is forcing us to revise substantially our old assumptions regarding the knowledge/power dynamic. In this article, we discuss a range of strategic information-management options available to individuals and institutions in the networked society, and contrast these ‘blueprints’ to Foucault’s well-known Panopticon model. We organize these observations and analyses within a new conceptual framework based on the geometry of ‘information flux,’ or the premise that the net flow of information between an individual and a network is as relevant to power dynamics as the nature or volume of that information. Based on this geometrical model, we aim to develop a lexicon for the design, description, and critique of socio-technical systems. 10 The Fog of Freedom Christopher M. Kelty Talk of freedom and liberty pervade the past and present of the digital com- puter and the Internet, from everyday “academic freedom” to the more specific notion of a “freedom to tinker”; from the prestigious Computers, Freedom and Privacy conference to “net neutrality”; from “Internet Free- dom” in North Africa and the Middle East and the Occupy movement in the United States to the famous case of Free Software, which has articulated precise freedoms as well as a legally constituted commons in reusable tech- nologies; from the “FreedomBox” to the Freedom Fone to “Liberté Linux (see figure 10.1).1 What kind of talk is this? Idle chatter? A rhetorical flourish? Serious busi- ness? Or perhaps it is more than talk? Freedom is associated with the digi- tal computer and the Internet to a greater extent than it is to most other technologies. And the digital computer and the Internet are associated with freedom much more than with other ideals, like justice, well-being, health, or happiness. Further, arguments are made just as often that digital com- puters and the Internet restrict rather than enhance freedom, leading to a morass of claims about the powers—good and evil—of these new technolo- gies that drape the globe and permeate our consciousness. There are many ways to dismiss this association as ideology or marketing hype, but there are fewer ways to take it seriously. Careful attention to the history and development of the digital computer and the Internet should be balanced with careful attention to the political theories of freedom and liberty if we want to make sense of the inflated claims associating freedom and computers. -

Conservative Movement How did the conservative movement, routed in Barry Goldwater's catastrophic defeat to Lyndon Johnson in the 1964 presidential campaign, return to elect its champion Ronald Reagan just 16 years later? What at first looks like the political comeback of the century becomes, on closer examination, the product of a particular political moment that united an unstable coalition. In the liberal press, conservatives are often portrayed as a monolithic Right Wing. Close up, conservatives are as varied as their counterparts on the Left. Indeed, the circumstances of the late 1980s -- the demise of the Soviet Union, Reagan's legacy, the George H. W. Bush administration -- frayed the coalition of traditional conservatives, libertarian advocates of laissez-faire economics, and Cold War anti- communists first knitted together in the 1950s by William F. Buckley Jr. and the staff of the National Review. The Reagan coalition added to the conservative mix two rather incongruous groups: the religious right, primarily provincial white Protestant fundamentalists and evangelicals from the Sunbelt (defecting from the Democrats since the George Wallace's 1968 presidential campaign); and the neoconservatives, centered in New York and led predominantly by cosmopolitan, secular Jewish intellectuals. Goldwater's campaign in 1964 brought conservatives together for their first national electoral effort since Taft lost the Republican nomination to Eisenhower in 1952. Conservatives shared a distaste for Eisenhower's "modern Republicanism" that largely accepted the welfare state developed by Roosevelt's New Deal and Truman's Fair Deal. Undeterred by Goldwater's defeat, conservative activists regrouped and began developing institutions for the long haul. -
