Gonzales After the Michael Brown decision in Ferguson, Missouri last week, amid the expected disgust about the so-called fairness of a legal system that allowed murderous police officer Darren Wilson to remain free and employed while pocketing cash for network news interviews, I was taken back to the days of yesteryear when I’d seen so many scenes of racism played out on my childhood television screen. Memories of fire hoses and German shepherds used against peaceful marchers in the sixties, white Bostonians spitting on Black school children in the seventies, crazy cops killing us in New York City in the eighties and, on and on. Decades later, visions of a bloody teenaged Michael Brown sprawled in the streets have been connected to that collage of disturbing images in my mind that visually defines racism in my lifetime. Continually haunted, I try to go about my days as a Black man in America, avoiding direct eye-contact with police least they suspect that I too am a cigar grabbing criminal who deserves death over dignity. Although I haven’t been a teenager in many years, it doesn’t deter me from thinking that I too could be slain because of the color of my skin, because of the kink of my hair, because of the bop in my walk, because of the jungle music in my head.

Smith Inc | 9781423624806 | English | Layton, UT, United States Little Master Stoker: Dracula PDF Book Sometimes, as the road was cut through the pine woods that seemed in the darkness to be closing down upon us, great masses of greyness, which here and there bestrewed the trees, produced a peculiarly weird and solemn effect, which carried on the thoughts and grim fancies engendered earlier in the evening, when the falling sunset threw into strange relief the ghost-like clouds which amongst the Carpathians seem to wind ceaselessly through the valleys. He is discreet and silent, and has grown into manhood in my service. The Fury of Dracula. I knew now well enough where to find the monster I sought. Be Inspired. Son of Dracula. Was it not this Dracula, indeed, who inspired that other of his race who in a later age again and again brought his forces over the great river into Turkey-land; who, when he was beaten back, came again, and again, though he had to come alone from the bloody field where his troops were being slaughtered, since he knew that he alone could ultimately triumph! While universally feared by the local people of Transylvania and even beyond, Dracula commands the loyalty of Gypsies and a band of Slovaks who transport his boxes on their way to London and to serve as an armed convoy bringing his coffin back to his castle. It seemed as if the whole awful creature were simply gorged with blood.

Creature of the Night: The Changing Image of Dracula Kathleen Webb Miami University Creature of the Night: The Changing Image of Dracula A thesis submitted to the Miami University Honors Program in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for University Honors by Kathleen Webb May 2003 Oxford, Ohio ii iii Abstract Vampires have horrified and fascinated people the world over for thousands of years. During that time vampires have evolved with society. Even from the time the Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula was published in 1897 to the first on-screen depiction of Dracula, there is change. Dracula doesn’t bring to mind the fearsome, corpse-like monster that Stoker created, but images of Bela Lugosi in the classic 1931 film. Today the “Bela Lugosi” Dracula has become the quintessential vampire. His long, black opera cape and tuxedo are the standard attire for the twentieth and twenty-first century vampire. Dracula is not a static creature, and has changed with the times. As society becomes more comfortable with sex, Dracula does as well. Thus it is important to examine not only what led to the “birth” of Dracula but also the social situations which have changed the way Dracula is portrayed in film and literature. Stoker’s Dracula who was pure evil has “matured” over time and now is an attractive figure who finds himself engaged in love affairs. iv Creature of the Night: The Changing Image of Dracula By Kathleen Webb Approved by: ______________________, Advisor (Dr. Ronald H. The Vampire as a Conduit of Cultural Anxieties Concerning Queerness BY WILLIAM A. TRINGALI Mentor: Heidi Bean Billy Tringali 1 The vampire is the queerest of monsters. Its terror does not emerge because it is an ungodly creation of science, or a mindless killing machine. It does not rise from the deep, scaled and covered in algae to steal unwary beachgoers. It is not a mishmash of various corpses, sewn together by a mad scientist. It does not howl at the moon, or remain a mild-mannered Jekyl in its waking hours, only to transform when it lies down to bed. No, the horror of the vampire is sexual.
