SWEET NOTHINGS: WOMEN IN ROCKABILLY MUSIC LAVERN BAKER AND JANIS MARTIN by Stephanie Lewin-Lane A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Music at The University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee August 2012 ABSTRACT SWEET NOTHINGS: WOMEN IN ROCKABILLY MUSIC LAVERN BAKER AND JANIS MARTIN by Stephanie Lewin-Lane The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2012 Under the Supervision of Dr. Gillian Rodger Rockabilly music is an exciting and vibrant style of early Rock and Roll that originated in the 1950s. With its aggressive beat and anti-establishment connotations, rockabilly is considered a widely male-dominated genre, a point supported by the majority of scholarship and literature on the subject. However, a review of available contemporary recordings, television shows, advertisements and interviews show that women were an integral part of the history of rockabilly music. -

Through the stylization of image, music and sound effects, advertisers communicate an abstract concept of a brand, and instantiate the brand through an audience member’s heightened experience of the brand via the ad. Facilitated by socialized and mediatized frameworks for brand communications, branding is an embodied practice that relies on the audience member’s participation with the brand through her/his real experience with an (audiovisual) advertisement. The effect of making the abstract brand tangible relies on successfully executing advertising objectives to create “impact” through stylized and often hyperreal representations of reality. -

The Death of the Critic?: a Roundtable on the Future of Music Criticism in the Digital Age
The Death of the Critic?: A Roundtable on the Future of Music Criticism in the Digital Age Moderated by Ann Powers Annenberg School for Communication University of Southern California September 24, 2008 1 The Norman Lear Center The Death of the Critic The Death of the Critic?: A Roundtable on the Future of Music Criticism in the Digital Age “The death of the critic” has become a catchphrase in discussing how the Internet has affected arts writing, nowhere more so than in music journalism. The avalanche of blogs written by everyone from veteran writers to neophytes has called into question the need for professional music writers. The availability of music in the Internet challenges the old idea that criticism is at its heart about description and assessment: why would a reader need someone else’s words about a song when she can just listen herself? And the shrinking availability of space in print publications, combined with the widespread belief that readers online have the attention spans of toddlers, has made it hard to justify long-form essays on music or anything else. Yet music writing continues to have an important presence in the culture, and arguably it is a primary pioneering form, allowing for writers to experiment with the new frameworks the Internet demands. At the same time, more great music books are being published than ever, and general interest publications are publishing more writers on pop. So is music criticism dying or being reborn? Our panel of professionals discusses the perils and possibilities. Traverso 1 Siena Traverso Eric Morel ENG 121D: Weather and Social Issues 1 October 2014 A Woman’s Scorn Little Big Town is a country music group who has been together since 1998. They struggled for a long time to make it onto the country music scene, until 2006 when their song “Boondocks” became widely popular. Since then, they have been on tour with some of the top names in the business, and have become a well-respected name in country. Their hit song “Tornado” was released in October of 2012. It topped Billboard’s Hot 100 list at fifty-one and Billboard’s Hot Country Songs at number six. Tornado is the title of their fifth album, and the song “Tornado” was the second single to be released from that album. It became an instant success with the public, and, in general, was favorably reviewed by critics. Siena ! 11/30/2014 5:14 PM The general message of “Tornado” is that of a scorned lover who is prepared to get Comment [1]: 1 Siena ! 11/30/2014 5:14 PM revenge on her cheating partner. The tone of the song is very dark and spiteful. In the song, the Comment [2]: 2 tornado (a metaphor for the scorned woman) directly addresses her lover. The direct address Siena ! 11/30/2014 5:15 PM starts in the first line of stanza one when the woman says, “Thought you’d change the weather.” Comment [3]: 3 This direct address heightens the bitter and attacking tone of the song. Next the “tornado” says, “Start a little storm/Make a little rain/But I’m gonna do one better hide the sun until you pray.” Here the woman is preparing to turn the cheating man’s world upside down in the same way that he has ruined hers. -
