PRESIDENT’S CORNER Kent Robinson [email protected]

It isn’t often that a truly unique opportunity presents itself with regard to enhanc- ing your genealogy research. In less than 4 months you will have the chance to take advantage of one of those events. The 1st IGGP International Germanic Genealogy Conference will take place in Minneapolis from July 28-30. While NGS, FGS and oth- er regional or local conferences may have a German track with a few presentations, they cannot compare to the breadth of presentations by well-known personalities and other knowledgeable individuals that will be featured at this conference. Besides speak- ers from the United States, there will also be some from and Australia. There will also be numerous presentations on topics that are not typically given at major conferences, particularly about some geographic re- gions. However, the excellent opportunity to increase your knowledge by attending choices of more than 70 presen- tations is not the only chance to potentially make important progress in your German genealogy research. Spring Issue Number 158 CHIPS FROM THE BOARD

Began the process of updating the Policy & Procedure Manual of the National Governing Board.

Joe Stamm, a Trustee of the Ohio Chapter, is the new Treasurer of the National Board of Directors replacing Margie Weiller, who is retiring from that position after several years of service. Thank you, Margie, we appre- ciate all the work you have done.

National Membership Meeting for 2016 will be held at the Ohio Chapter Spring Conference on Saturday, April 22 in Columbus, Ohio, Metropolitan Library.

Took action to de-charter the Illinois Chapter by September 30, 2017 (see article on page 3.)

Will begin implementation of a new membership benefit—reduced subscription price to German Life magazine starting in April (see article on page 9.)

ILLINOIS CHAPTER - ACTION TAKEN BY NATIONAL BOARD For the past year there have been a series of discussions expressing concern with regard to the status of the Illinois Chapter. Over the past four years they have been void of any actual, active leadership. Additionally during this period members only received one chapter newsletter and a chapter representative attended a national board meeting on only one occasion. A primary concern of the Board was that Illinois Chapter members were not re- ceiving benefits that are routinely provided by other state chapters. Several recent attempts to identify individuals who would be willing to take an active position within the chapter failed to yield any positive results.

In January we sent a letter to all Illinois Chapter members informing them of the potential future action by the board, if no individual(s) came forward to assist in rejuvenating the chapter. Although five people responded, none indicated a willingness to lead the chapter. It was for these reasons and as a result of the previous ill-fated at- tempts to identify leaders that at their March board meeting, the board voted to begin the process of de-chartering the Illinois Chapter which would be completed by September 30, 2017.

Obviously, this is not an action that I—nor the Board—took with pleasure. However, we feel that it is im- portant for individuals who join Pal-Am to be provided with benefits on a relatively uniform basis, realizing that there can exist some degree of variability within each chapter from time to time. We made it clear to Illinois Chapter members that they would be able to immediately choose another chapter as their primary or secondary member for the balance of this membership year and emphasized that this in no way affects the status of their Pal- Am membership or any of the benefits to which they are entitled.

NORTH CAROLINA CHAPTER PAL-AM FALL CONFERENCE September 30, 2017 "GERMANS WEST OF THE CATAWBA” Gaston County native, educator, author, award-winning, sought-after speaker Robert Carpenter will fill in the blanks and provide an interesting and entertaining presentation, “Germans West of the Catawba” at our September 30th Conference. Robert is also a member of our North Carolina Chapter of Palatines to America! Although history and genealogical records of North Carolina recognize Adam Sherrill, Sr. as the first, perma- nent white settler on the west bank of the Catawba River in North Carolina in 1747, he was not of German de- scent. One early report is of Heinrich Weidner, believed to be German born, trapping in North Carolina as early as 1738 and later obtained 1000 acres on the west side of the South Fork of the Catawba River in 1750. From Pennsylvania, German settlers began in the early 1750’s in the western piedmont. In increasing numbers German- speaking settlers from Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Virginia continued in what is today: Alexander, Burke, Catawba, Iredell, Lincoln, Rowan counties. That migration increased and continued until after the Revolutionary War. Catawba College Professor, Historian, and Author, Gary Freeze has even written that other than Rowan County, Catawba County had more German settlers than any North Carolina county. SAME DAY! ANNUAL HARVEST FOLK FESTIVAL In the afternoon you have an opportunity to attend one of Catawba County’s fun and educational events – Annual Harvest Folk Festival - at the historic 1913 Murray’s Mill complex that includes 1880s Wheathouse, 1890’s Murray & Minges General Store, 1913 John Murray House. The Mill ceased commercial operations in 1967. Since 1980, this last milling complex in Catawba County is preserved and interpreted by the Catawba County His- torical Association.

(Continued from page 1) PRESIDENT’S CORNER will be a number of other special opportunities. One will be a couple of research rooms—one will be for re- search assistance and a study group for translations and the other will enable you to get assistance with foreign language and old German script documents. Computers and printers will be in both rooms. There are already over 400 people registered to attend. So this also presents the potential of connecting with other individuals who are researching the same surname or within the same village in the homeland. There is currently a Connections Survey on the IGGP website for those who have already registered that enables them to enter the village from where their ancestors emigrated. Already there have been at least two separate matches that have enabled individuals to share potentially useful research via this method. I can attest to the fact that this can be an exciting discovery. On my last trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, I was amazed to discover two people who were researching in the village where my ancestors lived. The conference organizers are also considering a similar Connections Survey for surnames. I strongly urge all members of Palatines to America to seriously consider attending this conference. To view a conference brochure or to register online, go to: www.iggpartner.org > 2017 Conference. Come join what is sure to be over 500 people sharing your interest in German genealogy! I hope to see you in Minneapolis

in July.

“Gebhard lists people from the and surrounding areas who left mainly ca. 1747 to 1754, usually with the number in the family, the net worth, the religion, and with their “Palatine” villages of origin. That latter part intrigued me, because the exact place of origin is the single most important thing to know in German research (besides the name, of course). This period coincides with a peak time when people were leaving the Palatinate and surrounding areas to come to America.” – Ernest Thode

IGGP CONFERENCE—REGISTRATION OPEN by Kent Robinson

Registration for the 2017 International Germanic Genealogy Conference (Connections: International. Cul- tural. Personal) to be held in Minneapolis from July 28-30 is open. You should be able to register and pay online at the upcoming IGGP website or view a full conference brochure, print a registration form and submit your registration via mail.

As sort of a preview, there are 66 presentation sessions scheduled to be given by 39 different speakers. There will be 5 speakers from Germany and 1 from Australia. To give you an idea of the wide-breadth of present- ers, I have only heard 11 of these speakers give presentations in my many years of attending local, state, regional, and national conferences. Specific events include a Biergarten in St. Paul on Thursday evening, a Friday evening event with some German appetizers, and a banquet on Saturday evening. In addition to the traditional vendor ar- ea, attendees can take advantage of special areas to obtain assistance in translations, research guidance in a variety of specific regions of German-speaking citizens, and assistance with computerized research. There will also be op- portunities for individuals to schedule “Connections” sessions with others researching either specific regions, sur- names, or a specific interest. A number of partner societies will also schedule hospitality events during the confer- ence. Aside from these specific activities, it will simply be an excellent opportunity to be among individuals with similar research interests. There will likely be some surprises during the conference as well. Who knows—you may actually discover a cousin or break through a long-standing brick wall!

As previously indicated this will replace the 2017 Pal-Am National Conference as we are providing our full support for this event. We strongly urge you to consider attending this important conference. Remember when registering to indicate that you are a member of Pal-Am. The reduced registration fee for partnership members ended on March 31. Starting on April 1, the registration fee increased by $74.

All rooms at the conference hotel (Minneapolis Marriott Northwest) have been sold out. The conference committee has arranged additional rooms at 4 additional hotels within close driving distance from the conference hotel. If you need information about these hotels, please see: http://ggsmn.org/cpage.php?pt=83 now or the IGGP website.

Spring Issue Number 158 THE KOCHERTHAL CIRCLE

If you are a descendant of a German immigrant who came to America between 1708 and 1711, you may be eligible to become a member of the Kocherthal Circle. Full infor- mation is on the Pal-Am website, including copies of application forms to be filled out.

Joshua Kocherthal was a Lutheran pastor who led a group of Germans to New York and helped them settle in upstate New York under the authority and with the assistance of Queen Anne of England. Henry Z Jones, Jr. has spent years researching this group, and his books have a wealth of information about the people and their origins.

Pal-Am members who are eligible to join can find further information on our website.

GERMAN BIRTH RECORDS: A PRIMER

You may be transcribing your family birth records. You can understand the old German script, and can even figure out names and numbers. But, there are a few instances where the terminology makes you come to a halt.

Jubilate? As a date? Huh? There are several, based on the first words of the Latin text for that Sunday in the church year.

Jubilate: the third Sunday after Easter.

Quasimodo: the Sunday after Easter.

Trinitatis: the first Sunday after Pentecost.

Thanks to Ernie Thode for this information. More information can be found in Ken Smith’s book, Genealogy Dates: A User-Friendly Guide. ISBN-13: 978-0897251334
