As a consequence, many species have become threatened, especially those dependent on dead wood. Integration of conservation in forest management is therefore essential for protecting boreal forest species diversity. To optimise conservation efforts, we need to understand species habitat requirements and diversity patterns in managed forests. This thesis aims to increase our understanding of insect species diversity patterns on clearcuts in boreal forest landscapes. I have surveyed beetles, bees and wasps on clearcuts in two boreal forest regions in Sweden and assessed the importance of clearcut properties and composition of surrounding landscape for species occurrence and diversity. Locally, amount of dead wood was positively associated with high species richness and individual species occurrence of certain wood-dependent beetles. Bee and wasp species richness increased with high local flower richness and clearcut size. Landscape composition was at least as important as local habitat characteristics for shaping diversity patterns.

  • Effects of Size and Forest Structure of Old-Growth Forests on the Species
Preface Insects have fascinated me from an early age, and I have used countless of hours chasing butterflies, collecting beetles and digging in the muddy bottom of the pound in my parents garden, hunting for new discoveries. My fascination and curiosity for the diversity and complexity of insect communities has increased during my studies at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), and has led me to choose a topic within entomology for my master thesis. My work is based on a study that was started in 2014 by Leonie Gough, and is a collaboration with the Habitat fragmentation and Pathways to Extinction in dead-wood dependent fungi (PATHEXT) by Jenni Nordén and Karl-Henrik Larsson at the University of Oslo. The purposes of this study was to use the fungi and dead wood data from the PATHEXT to explain patterns of species richness and resource preferences of saproxylic insects. I would like to thank my supervisors, Tone Birkemoe and Anne Sverdrup-Thygeson, for all the help and guidance they have given me. They have followed the development of the work from an early point, and have sheared of their knowledge at all stages of the process. Our discussion group, with master student Ranjeni Sivasubramaniam, has helped me to collect my thoughts, and the feedback from Ranjeni has encourage me during the writing. I would also like to thank Jenni Nordén, for sharing her data from the PATHEXT project with me. Thanks to Leonie Gough and Adrian Rasmussen for their contribution in the collection of data, and Sindre Ligaard, Lars Ove Hansen and Csaba Thuroczy for the species identification of the beetles and parasitoid wasps.

Chapter 1 THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF PRESCRIBED BURNING OF CLEAR-CUTS ON SAPROXYLIC BEETLE DIVERSITY ARE SHORT-LIVED AND DEPEND ON FOREST-FIRE CONTINUITY Jonas Victorsson1,2,*, Lars-Ove Wikars1,3 and Stefan Ås1 1Animal Ecology, Evolutionary Biology Centre, Uppsala University, Norbyvägen 18 D, SE-752 36 Uppsala, Sweden 2Department of Ecology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Box 7044, SE-750 07 Uppsala, Sweden 3Hovgården 66, SE -781 91 Borlänge, Sweden ABSTRACT Before modern forestry started, forest fire was the dominating large-scale disturbance in boreal forest. Prescribed burning of clear-cuts is increasingly used as a conservation measure but is potentially less beneficial for fire-associated species than burning of intact forest. We investigated the temporal effect of prescribed burning of clear-cuts in two regions in central Sweden: one region with a relatively unbroken forest- fire continuity (Orsa) and one region with a broken fire continuity (Långshyttan) more typical for Fennoscandia.

S. 2011: Polypore–beetle associations in Finland. — Ann. Zool. Fennici 48: 319–348. Seven old-growth, mostly spruce- and pine-dominated, protected forests rich in dead wood were inventoried for polypores and polypore-associated beetles in Finland in 2001–2007. A total of 198 polypore species (86% of the Finnish species list) were examined for associated Coleoptera. Of these, 116 species (59% of the studied species, or 50% of the Finnish polypore mycota) were found to host adults and/or larvae of 176 beetle species. Fifty-six polypore species were utilized by larvae of 21 beetle spe- cies. Many new fungus–beetle associations were discovered among 544 species pairs, including 421 polypore fruit body–adult Coleoptera species co-occurrences, and 123 fruit body–larva associations. Eighty-two species of fungi (41% of the studied species, or 36% of the Finnish polypores) were neither visited nor colonized by Coleoptera. Introduction Nikitsky (1993) reported the host fungi of Myc- etophagidae of Russia and adjacent countries, During recent decades polypores have become and Krasutskiy (2005) reported 208 fungicolous one of the taxonomically best-studied groups beetles and 89 species of their host fungi in of forest organisms in Finland (Niemelä 2005).

S., NIEMELÄ, T. & KINNUNEN, J. 2006: Polypores of western Finnish Lapland and seasonal dynamics of polypore beetles. – Karstenia 46: 37–64. Helsinki. ISSN 0453–3402. The paper summarizes fi eld inventories of polypores and associated beetles in north- western Finland (Lapland) in the years 2001–2004. The research area includes near- virgin or old-growth forests of the Pallas–Yllästunturi National Park and the Pisavaara Strict Nature Reserve, one of the largest areas of protected forests in the country. Alto- gether 132 polypore species were found or (a few) documented from herbarium collec- tions. Special attention was paid to those beetles that visit or inhabit polypores, either to consume their spores and mycelium, or living in polypore basidiocarps at larval stages. Beetle species compositions and their occurrences as larvae versus imagines differed ac- cording to the characteristics of polypore basidiomata. Four kinds (life cycles) of basidi- omata were separated: ephemeral, annual sturdy, annual hibernating, and perennial. The selective effect of these life cycles over attracted beetles is extensively discussed with numerous examples. Parallels were found between the insects living in decayed wood versus mushrooms: while beetles of the ephemeral polypore hosts follow in their biology the “mushroom” pathway (pupating in soil debris), those living in perennial basidiocarps follow the “wood” pathway in both consuming the fungus and in pupating inside the de- caying basidiocarp. The paper includes complete lists of polypores and polypore-linked beetles found in the study area.
